Loads of shops, bars and restaurants are now allowing dogs in them.
I'm very allergic and one of my dc is too.
It's so widespread now. Such little thought for those with allergies.

@Ummmmgogo
dogs shed hair which could land in your food.
Not from under a cafe table nowhere near the kitchen where food is prepped and served! No one is brushing their pampered pooch in a cafe and sending up clouds of hairs.

they jump up, lick things and sniff at you.
Only if poorly trained. But that wasn't what I was questioning - that's not your regular cafe-frequenting dog at all.

allowing animals inside is unhygenic.
In your loony opinion, of course.

I would worry about what other hygiene standards the restaurant didn't understand if they couldn't understand that dogs should be in a restaurant.
The dogs aren't prepping or serving food. They're just sitting under tables. I think you may be a touch over anxious abotu hygiene, honestly.

hth
Err, not really Grin

I mean fine - you're not a fan of dogs. That's OK. But just say it's a personal preference. It's not inherently disgusting to eat your sandwich at a table next to my dog on the floor!

ferrier · 11/04/2018 00:19

Dogs and pubs are like Romeo and Juliet - meant to be together! And also places like NT cafes. But not clothes shops.
Round here dogs are barely permitted anywhere and I haven't noticed any changes recently.
YAB a bit U.

TattyCat · 11/04/2018 00:19

I'm allergic to children. They bring me out in a terrible rash...

starzig · 11/04/2018 00:19

Not a fan of dogs in public but pubs and restaurants is just disgusting albeit I realise occasionally necessary. But should not be made commonplace

Ummmmgogo · 11/04/2018 00:21

you might not think so but billions of people around the world agree with me! I haven't called you a loony for your frankly bizaare opinions so I would appreciate it if you could use a less disabilst term to disagree with me. people live inside, creatures live outside.

Ummmmgogo · 11/04/2018 00:22

I'm not anxious about people germs but animal ones yep of course I am. any reasonable person would be!

NoSquirrels · 11/04/2018 00:24

but pubs and restaurants is just disgusting

But why, though? Honestly, apart from you personally not being a fan of dogs, why is it "disgusting"?

I'd never take my cats out in public - they are unruly & badly trained, lick their bums extremely often, walk everywhere they shouldn't and sit wherever they feel entitled.

But my dog will just sit under my chair, and maybe wag her tail hopefully now and then. She's honestly not disgusting in any way.

starzig · 11/04/2018 00:24

I was in a pub once and we thought to get some food. We were sitting eating and a dog came and peed on the carpet next to us. The landlady then came and mopped it up (Not even cleaned) with a bar towel and went back behind the bar with the towel over her shoulder. We left rather pronto.

Ofthread · 11/04/2018 00:24

I do like dogs, couldn't eat a whole one, but where I live (urban) there are dogs everywhere and also dog bloody shite everywhere. Local shops, including deli and cafes seem to be letting them in, or there's some kind of a grey area going on.

NoSquirrels · 11/04/2018 00:26

[Backs away slowly absolutely NOT mentioning that people are animals and that most things you can die of are definitely "people" germs...]

TattyCat · 11/04/2018 00:27

I'm not anxious about people germs but animal ones yep of course I am. any reasonable person would be!

Er.... nope. I'm more worried about human germs, tbh. Public door handles and the like are the single most disgusting things you could encounter and significantly dirtier than your average dog!!

You're more likely to catch something nasty from a person than a dog!

Ummmmgogo · 11/04/2018 00:29

there is no way a dog handle is dirty than a dog! a door handle had never eaten its own shit and then tried to lick me!

Marmaladeorange · 11/04/2018 00:29

I don’t particularly like small children but there’s a lot of those around. It makes me extremely uncomfortable to see spilled drinks, sticky stains and food mushed into surfaces, chairs and on the floor. But I deal with it. As many people deal with allergies. My dog doesn’t make a mess, is well behaved and often provides free entertainment for said children (she loves them, they love her). It’s just life, get on with it.

NoSquirrels · 11/04/2018 00:33

a door handle had never eaten its own shit and then tried to lick me!

I know, I know. I was backing away slowly but then you said this.

Grin

A door handle is almost PRECISELY THE SAME. A public toilet door handle will have loads of shit germs on it, and you putting your hand on it is pretty much like getting licked...

TattyCat · 11/04/2018 00:33

there is no way a dog handle is dirty than a dog! a door handle had never eaten its own shit and then tried to lick me!

Now you're being ridiculous. You do know that a high percentage of men (and women, for that matter) don't wash their hands when they've been to the toilet, don't you? And that they generally touch themselves whilst peeing? Then go and touch door handles?

And the majority of dogs do not eat their own shit. Or anyone else's for that matter. Mine even backs away from anything remotely dodgy and views it with suspicion. She would probably do the same to you Grin

Lockheart · 11/04/2018 00:37

@Ummmmbongo it’s ironic that you’re think Squirrels is using disablist language when you’ve called all dogs (including guide dogs) “inherently disgusting” and that “allowing animals inside is unhygienic”.

Nice to know what you’d think of my friend if you saw her out and about with her guide dog...

If you don’t like dogs, fine. You don’t have to, there are animals I don’t like as well. But you can’t say all dogs are inherently disgusting and then say “Oh but guide dogs are ok” - they’re still dogs!!! Have a little more care - your words can be very hurtful to those who rely on their assistance dogs.

ohhereweareagain · 11/04/2018 00:42

I've noticed it too in our small local cafe. Not working dogs ie for hearing or sight but regular pet dogs. Not overly bothered but don't particularly like dogs so not thrilled either. That longing staring at you every time you go to take a bite out of your sandwich plus some dogs really stink..helps with diet though as it puts me off my food so less chance of cake Smile

Ummmmgogo · 11/04/2018 00:50

squirrels and everyone else you are missing the point. the door handle contains PEOPLE germs! I don't know why you are finding this so hard to understand. I need to back away and not get sucked in to this but it's just so hard not to reply.

@lockheart I'm sorry I upset you and your friend. I don't really know what to say to make it better. this was a discussion about whether dogs should be allowed inside places and i don't think that they should be. i can understand why people would need a guide dog with them and have never complained about them (just privately been terrrified). but people have aaid that children are unhygenic and no-one is saying they have to take more care with their words.

my intention was just to provide the majority view on this thread not upset people so I'll leave now. I hope you and your friend are ok x

Iris40 · 11/04/2018 00:53

mumsnet makes me laugh! any mention of kids in public places and it's terrible, should not be allowed unless they sit still and don't move! like that is a natural inclination of a child!! but smelly flea ridden dogs who many people are allergic to are welcomed!!! as you can tell I don't like animals and think they are mainly pis.... shi..... machines.

NoSquirrels · 11/04/2018 00:56

the door handle contains PEOPLE germs!

I get that Ummmm. It's just that you're WAY more likely to get sick from "people germs" than you are from "dog germs". Way, way, way more likely.

You don't like/are terrified of dogs. I am sympathetic.

But it is irrational.

Ummmmgogo · 11/04/2018 00:59

I need to get some rest and I've promised to leave this thread squirrels. stop it!

Yep. I don't get it either. Mental schism I suppose.

Choklitdoknut · 11/04/2018 01:17

Why do dog lovers try and compare children and animals? Small humans and dogs are not equal. You have to tolerate children or you would be a nob. But dogs? Theyre animals...

steff13 · 11/04/2018 05:59

I'm not anxious about people germs but animal ones yep of course I am. any reasonable person would be!

I've never gotten the flu or a stomach virus or even a cold from a dog.

there is no way a dog handle is dirty than a dog!

My dog didn't come with a handle. 😔
