Won't give me another wheelie bin...

Bins here are collected weekly. EVERY Sunday without fail my wheelie bin is full. (There collected Thursday) several times local cats (I believe) have managed to get the bags out the wheelie bin as they are open with the bags on top because they are over flowing. Anyway these cats will rip out all my rubbish so the garden will be covered. I called the council and asked for another wheelie bin as several neighbours have more than one of the same colour top bins. I was told I wasn't allowed another one and the ones the neighbours had were "obviously stolen!" Aibu to not see why I can't have another one. And before any one suggests I recycle more I do I recycle everything that can be and I have no car to go to a tip.

Around here you have to order and pay for additional bins. They aren't overly expensive but I think they are priced to be a deterrent. Is that possible?

CannotEvenThink · 11/02/2018 15:32

Bigger bins are only available to larger families. How many of you are there? What on earth are you putting in there? We are a family of 5 with fort nightly collections and have no problems at all with one standard size bin.

Blackteadrinker77 · 11/02/2018 15:33

I can't see how you have that much rubbish in one week.

What type of things are you throwing away?

ThisLittleKitty · 11/02/2018 15:33

Family of 5. I wouldn't mind paying but wasn't offered this as an option.

Is the rubbish definitely all yours? Is your wheelie bin in a safe place until it's taken out?

It's worth finding out the exact regs about what your council will allow per household.

Fairylea · 11/02/2018 15:34

We have an extra black bin for household rubbish as we have a disabled son who has a lot of disposable equipment and sanitary stuff etc. The council gave us a form to complete and they sent us one free. Some of the families with extra bins may have similar circumstances.

BubblegumFactory · 11/02/2018 15:34

How many people live in your house?
Sounds like a lot of waste!!!
Have you got a compost bin in the garden? Our bin is never full but I suspect that is because we compost a lot of our waste.

Vitalogy · 11/02/2018 15:35

Tell a fib and say your bin has been stolen.

bonzo77 · 11/02/2018 15:35

Echo above: how comes so much rubbish? Do you really squash everything down? 5 of us here, including one in disposable nappies. Fill about 1/4-1/3 of the bin a week. Plus half a bin of recycling.

LanguidLobster · 11/02/2018 15:35

Is there a skip near you?

Janleverton · 11/02/2018 15:35

We have to provide our bin. Main bin collected fortnightly, recycling every week. Family of 5 and we only just fill the wheelie bin (that we paid for) once a fortnight.

GhostWriter666 · 11/02/2018 15:35

We're only allowed 1 bin. They're emptied every fortnight. Though it was less than 1/3 full last time so I didn't bother.

How are you making so much rubbish in a couple of day?
Do you not get a recycling bin? We're allowed as many of these as we want.
Could you put a rock or something on top of the bin to stop cats getting in?

PlateOfBiscuits · 11/02/2018 15:36

Do you have lots of nappies or something? Not helpful but I can’t imagine how you overflow the bin every week!

Are you sure you’re recycling as much as you can? My recycling bin is always much fuller than my general ware bin.

TheFallenMadonna · 11/02/2018 15:36

We can get a second recycling bin, but not a general waste bin. The recycling bin can take paper, card, tins, glass, tetrapacks.

TheFallenMadonna · 11/02/2018 15:36

Fortnightly collections

DonnyAndVladSittingInATree · 11/02/2018 15:36

Ours are entire fortnightly and there are often weeks where my bin still isn’t full. It’s rare that I can’t close the lid. There are 3 of us plus a dog And cats. What on earth are you putting in there? Confused

DonnyAndVladSittingInATree · 11/02/2018 15:37

Entire=emptied

PlateOfBiscuits · 11/02/2018 15:37

LanguidLobster do you mean a tip?

Reallycantbebothered · 11/02/2018 15:38

Family of five here and bins collected every 3 weeks and we manage!
We are scrupulous with recycling ( which is collected every week ) , think you need to look at how you buy your food and how you can cut down on waste and make sure eveithat can be recycled is!

NoSquirrels · 11/02/2018 15:38

Is it your black bin?

Our black bin is nearly always not full - collected fortnightly, family of 4.

Our recycling bin on the other hand gets full quickly.

Does your council restrict your recycling options? What sort of stuff are you binning?

Honestly, I think they’re right not to give you another one. They’re trying to discourage landfill- we need to make less waste.

Almostfifty · 11/02/2018 15:39

Our rubbish bin is only collected every three weeks. We're a family of six. I don't have that much rubbish.

Twillow · 11/02/2018 15:39

One bin lasts our family a fortnight easily. I know you say you are recycling but are your kids throwing pop bottles etc in the right place? Or nappies, that could make a difference to an extent. Are you throwing food waste out in your main bin? If so maybe get a composter?
We do have a disposable culture now and it is a problem - the rubbish doesn't vanish once it leaves our sight after all!

It's more likely to be foxes than cats, or even seagulls if coastal. If there's so much interest in the bin is there a lot of food waste in there?

Recycling as much as you can and composting will help.

afreshnewname · 11/02/2018 15:42

Our bins are collected 4 weekly! We REALLY recycle everything we can and manage, family of 4, I'm baffled you can't manage a weekly collection
