Won't give me another wheelie bin...

Bins here are collected weekly. EVERY Sunday without fail my wheelie bin is full. (There collected Thursday) several times local cats (I believe) have managed to get the bags out the wheelie bin as they are open with the bags on top because they are over flowing. Anyway these cats will rip out all my rubbish so the garden will be covered. I called the council and asked for another wheelie bin as several neighbours have more than one of the same colour top bins. I was told I wasn't allowed another one and the ones the neighbours had were "obviously stolen!" Aibu to not see why I can't have another one. And before any one suggests I recycle more I do I recycle everything that can be and I have no car to go to a tip.

What recycling arrangements do you have in your council area?

GetsPostByOwl · 11/02/2018 16:07

We are a family of five and have one bin. No recycling at all. Just a standard grey wheelie bin. It is collected weekly and it isn't full each week. I would seriously look at your wastage to be honest. It seems excessive to be filling a bin in 4 days.

Make sure you crush all your bottles and replace lids to keep them flat, tear up boxes and look at what packaging you are buying. Try and reduce the amount of rubbish your household creates.

JenniferYellowHat1980 · 11/02/2018 16:08

It's getting people's backs up because you can't be arsed to sort your rubbish into recyclables so it's all going to landfill. And you're expecting the council to bail you out. Imagine if her had to give everyone two bins and collect double? Lazy.

ShellyBoobs · 11/02/2018 16:09

Fucking hell. You’re seriously going to lie about your bin being stolen to avoid paying for another one?

I hope they catch you out.

I hope they increase your council tax to account for the extra expense of emptying 2 bins of unnecessary waste as well.

8misskitty8 · 11/02/2018 16:09

Don’t understand how your wheelie bin is full after 4 days. What on earth are you throwing out. ?
Is it really all your rubbish or are other people sneaking bags in ?
If it’s the latter get a bin lock on it. If it’s the former then you need to reassess what your are throwing out.

We have fortnightly collections here and only occasionally does my bin lid not shut for collection (usually it’s a birthday week or Christmas/new year). We only have the crappy recycling boxes which are useless and don’t hold much, i’d love a recycling wheelie bin.

KurriKurri · 11/02/2018 16:10

Oh if you have a smaller bin then that isn't adequate for a family of your size - I think you might be able to request a swap for a larger bin from the council.

PushMyButton · 11/02/2018 16:10

That's an immense amount of waste... Were a family of six, including two in pull ups at night, and still easily manage with fortnightly collection... I don't think I physically buy enough stuff each week to have your problem!

DullAndOld · 11/02/2018 16:10

you could buy another one?
round here, you don't even get given one, let alone an extra one.

PlaymobilPirate · 11/02/2018 16:11

Op has said she's going yo start using the food bin. Maybe we can back off and give reduction tips rather than having a go now?

Loads of stuff doesn't occur to me until it's pointed out. I think this is one of those things for op?

Sparklingbrook · 11/02/2018 16:11

In these parts if the lid on your wheelie is not completely closed they won't empty it.

ThisLittleKitty · 11/02/2018 16:11

I would pay for one. That isn't an option.

How on Earth are you managing to fill an entire wheelie bin in four days?

Vitalogy · 11/02/2018 16:12

Maybe the council don't realise you only have one of the small bins. They might swap it for one of the bigger ones.

BarbaraofSevillle · 11/02/2018 16:12

Even if your DD doesn't eat a single mouthful that you prepare for her (unlikely), that's not going to fill a bin in 3 days.

They won't give you another bin because they have to limit the volume of waste each household produces. If you think your neighbours are stealing your bin space, because they are producing too much rubbish too, how about locking the bin - a bike lock would do it, or you might be able to get actual bin locks?

Tips? How hard can it be? I put my plastic and tin in the red box, the glass in the green one, the paper in the blue one and the food waste in the lockable bin. Sorted. No need for another bin.

DullAndOld · 11/02/2018 16:13

of course it's an option..Confused you just go to a hardware store/country store, and buy one.

lonelymelissa · 11/02/2018 16:14

We have fortnightly collections. We also have an open fire so burn anything possible. But we still have to make trips to the council tip every week as the wheeley bins are overflowing within days. As a foster carer we often have 8 to 10 people living here but even that is not worthy of a larger, or second, bin. No option to buy one either.

JenniferYellowHat1980 · 11/02/2018 16:15

8-10 people is very different Melissa, and good on you.

8misskitty8 · 11/02/2018 16:15

In our council you can apply for a larger bin but only if you have more adults in the house, think it is 3/4. You have to provide proof.

You might find op that the council have recorded somewhere your request for a second bin so if you now claim yours has been stolen they will know you are lying.

userofthiswebsite · 11/02/2018 16:15

OP has said she's got the small sized bin so no wonder she gets overflow issues, give her a break.

OP - are you compacting your rubbish as much as poss? EG if you have an empty cereal box you can pull it apart at the base so that it goes into the bin completely flat and thus takes up much less room.

PurpleCrazyHorse · 11/02/2018 16:16

We're a family of 4 with a pre-schooler still in nappies. We have full sized bins collected fortnightly and we only 3/4 fill the general waste bin.

We do however fully fill our recycling bin; our council recycles pretty much everything (glass, paper, cardboard, all plastic cartons and cartons, tetrapaks etc). And we also just started with food waste. In fact I did tell the council our recycling bin disappeared so we could get a second one because we recycle so much (they didn't have a mechanism to give, or allow me to buy, a second one, only to replace a lost one), they seemed pretty surprised I was filling a wheelie bin a fortnight!

I think you need to look at what you're putting in your bin as I can't believe you've filled a full size wheelie bin in 3 days unless you're not recycling anything.

Food waste is fine, the lid keeps the smells away and you can always buy one that's fits in with your kitchen decor. Biodegradable caddie liners keep things clean and easy to dispose of. We have a larger caddy outside that it goes in. You might be surprised how much food waste you're filling your bin with. Plus, our outside caddy has a catch to stop animals getting in, so you shouldn't get your bin bags torn apart as they don't contain food.

PurpleCrazyHorse · 11/02/2018 16:16

Sorry, just saw you actually have a small waste wheelie bin. Still, look at food waste recycling, at least it might stop the bin bags getting torn open.

WonderLime · 11/02/2018 16:17

*Op has said she's going yo start using the food bin. Maybe we can back off and give reduction tips rather than having a go now?

Loads of stuff doesn't occur to me until it's pointed out. I think this is one of those things for op?*

Usually I'd agree, but there is no way the bin is being filled purely from food waste over 3 days. I don't even think my entire week shop straight from the supermarket would fill my bin.

The OP is not acknowledging the damage to the environment - in fact it's obvious she just doesn't care. She'd rather lie or steal than address the issue. And when posters have asked about the waste she is ignoring the question - so how can anyone provide tips?

This kind of ignorance makes me very angry. Honestly, where do you think all that waste goes? How can you just not care about the long term damage it does. It's infuriating as we should all have a social responsibility to do our bit.

twinone · 11/02/2018 16:18

You need to analyse your waste.
Emptied Thursday, over flowing on Sunday suggests you are not sorting it correctly.

We are a family of 4 on fortnightly collections, our recycling bins are always full to the brim, rarely is our general waste the same.
