Won't give me another wheelie bin...

ThisLittleKitty · 11/02/2018 15:30

Bins here are collected weekly. EVERY Sunday without fail my wheelie bin is full. (There collected Thursday) several times local cats (I believe) have managed to get the bags out the wheelie bin as they are open with the bags on top because they are over flowing. Anyway these cats will rip out all my rubbish so the garden will be covered. I called the council and asked for another wheelie bin as several neighbours have more than one of the same colour top bins. I was told I wasn't allowed another one and the ones the neighbours had were "obviously stolen!" Aibu to not see why I can't have another one. And before any one suggests I recycle more I do I recycle everything that can be and I have no car to go to a tip.

DullAndOld

Buy what?

I couldn't just go out and buy another bin - the council would still want paying to empty it and, seeing as they don't offer that option for extra household bins (apart from a garden waste bin) they just wouldn't empty it and I would get a warning not to abuse the system.

SoupDragon · 11/02/2018 16:18

OP has said she's got the small sized bin so no wonder she gets overflow issues, give her a break.

No, I still don’t get it. I have the smaller (well, the choice is large or standard here) bin and fortnightly collections and it’s still rarely full to the brim. With weekly collections it should be nowhere near full.

SoupDragon · 11/02/2018 16:19

She’s stuffed if her council switches to fortnightly collections like so many others have.

DullAndOld · 11/02/2018 16:20

oh!
so much for that theory then.
As I said our local councils don't provide them at all, so if you want one you go and buy it..

ThisLittleKitty · 11/02/2018 16:20

Must admit I didn't realise you could buy them in shops. Ok I won't call the council and lie. I'm not too sure what it is because it's just general house hold waste and I only have one in nappies. I'm not always over by 2/3 but sometimes I am and my council won't take extras that don't fit in so when it's empty it's instantly half full again iyswim.

By picking up on the small bin while ignoring the weekly collection (ample) you're encouraging the OP to carry on.

Julie8008 · 11/02/2018 16:21

Your very lucky, as round here bin men wont empty a bin if the lid isn't closed. Will only empty one bin per house, so no point stealing a second one. Lorries are designed for the slim bin so the bigger one couldn't be emptied, hence no one has them anymore And you can actually get fined for putting recyclable waste in your black bin, which is emptied fortnightly.

So reduce, reuse, recycle and if you have extra waste take it to the dump like everyone else does.

stickytoffeevodka · 11/02/2018 16:23

Ours don't get emptied at all if the lids don't close and all recycling has to get taken to the tip ourselves! We only have black bins.

If you're happy to put food waste in the black bin I don't understand the objection to just putting into a different bin?

Floralnomad · 11/02/2018 16:27

Our council wouldn’t empty 2 general waste bins for one house so unless you live somewhere where it’s not obvious how many bins and how many houses i can’t see how having an extra bin will help . Most councils are cracking down on waste and collections , like a pp ours won’t take the bin if the lid is not closed .

Luckycatsplat · 11/02/2018 16:28

Just another voice to encourage you to review yoir waste.

Our bins get collected fortnightly. We have one for recycling, one for food and one for everything else. The food waste is a small caddy and the other two bins are small (140l). We put a bag of cat litter in the general waste every day and even then it's only maybe 2/3rds full by bin collection.

Our recycling is also maybe 2/3rds but that is partly because we crush cans etc before putting them in.

Average family who aren't as conscious of waste as we should be. I don't understand how you produce so much rubbish?

We are only allowed one general waste bin. Admittedly most are twice the size of ours. We purposely asked for small bins. Our general waste bin got nicked and it cost us £60 to replace it!

upsideup · 11/02/2018 16:28

We are a family of 7, 4 large dogs and 2 cats. Our black bin has never been close to full. Instead of worrying about how you can get another bin, I would be asking howyou can cut down on your waste.

ThisLittleKitty · 11/02/2018 16:30

No it wouldn't be obvious here at all. I live in a ground floor flat where everyone has their own wheelie bins and upstairs flats have one to share between 2 flats so I definitely don't think it would be noticeable if I did buy one.

assuming you have a garden /yard of some sort get a compost bin for raw veg, fruit, tea etc Bedding from herbivores or shredded cardboard can go in there too. Hair (if you cut the kids hair yourself) can go in too.

Cooked waste can go in a bokashi bin or wormery.

Serve up a smaller portion of dinner for each person - if they are hungry they can have seconds - if not the leftovers are reusable (unlike plate scrapings)

I have a list if sell-by dates above the fridge so that things get used before the go off. Also when you open, say, ham write the date opened on it with a sharpie - until we started doing this, we used not be able to remember how long packets had been open and ended chucking stuff in case it had gone off

44PumpLane · 11/02/2018 16:30

I have twins in nappies and we are on a fortnightly collection with no food waste collection and we are never even near a full bin.

Our recycling bin on the other hand can get out of control as we are anal about recycling everything we can.

I do think maybe looking at what you are throwing out would benefit you, alongside a bin lock to make sure no one else can sneak their bags in.

Oldraver · 11/02/2018 16:33

You really need to think why you are producing so much waste...there are ways to reduce stuff going into landfill...though dont get me started on my council stopping recycling 'flyaway plastic' ie plastic bags that come with deliveries.

I'm sure people on here can help you with different ways to reduce waste.

If you dont like the idea of the food bin hanging around...then you could freeze it. I know it may sound mad but if you keep a click lock box in the freezer you can put leftover food straight in. It doesn't have time to go off, manky or smell. We have a crate in the bottom of the chest freezer and chuck it in there.. We put veg peelings straight into the outside food bin as in the winter they dont really go off

Lovemusic33 · 11/02/2018 16:34

Our bins only get emptied every other week, the bins are small. I often have to take my rubbish to the tip, my recycling bin is always full too but with 2 kids we seem to produce a lot of rubbish. I recycle what I can and we don’t really have a huge amount of food waste. You can only get a bigger bin here if you have a large family or medical needs where you produce more rubbish.

BuggerOffAndGoodDayToYou · 11/02/2018 16:36

We are a family of four with a small wheelie bin (our council won’t take more than one bin from any house) and even when the children were in nappies I never filled it.

Our bin is collected fortnightly but I generally only put it out once a month. It is due for collection on Tuesday and has one pedal bin liner in it - because I emptied the bathroom bins and kitchen bin today - so I doubt I’ll bother putting it out this week.

Recycling (and food waste) is collected weekly. I have a separate lidded bin under the kitchen sink for food waste and transfer this to the bin a couple of times a week.

When I see bins in my street overflowing you can be sure that there recycling and food waste bins are empty.....

ThisLittleKitty · 11/02/2018 16:37

Yes I have a front and back garden so have a garden waste bin that's for food aswell.

50sQueen · 11/02/2018 16:37

I work in waste management and if you really are recycling everything then perhaps you need to consider a compost bin in the garden for your food waste if there's not a council collection. Also think about what you are buying from the supermarket in the first place. So pre packed fruit veg could be replaced with loose.

JenniferYellowHat1980 · 11/02/2018 16:38

OP, some people have been very generous in saying give you a break, but your latest post shows that you couldn't give a monkeys about reducing, just how you can get away with sending more to landfill.

SluttyButty · 11/02/2018 16:39

Crickey, the size waste bin you showed is the size of our recycling bin. Our rubbish one is smaller and we have two weekly collections for both. We also recycle food waste here. My rubbish bin at the end of two weeks isn’t more than 2/3 full, family of 4 and a dog Confused

Spindelina · 11/02/2018 16:39

What can you recycle?

Or, more to the point, what can’t you? Here, the things that go in the black bin are mostly black plastic (other colours go in the recycling), plastic film, and nappies/wipes. We have a 140 litre bag (no bins here) collected fortnightly and if it weren’t for the nappies it’d be mostly empty.

Seeline · 11/02/2018 16:41

So what other recycling provisions do you have/use? Do you have boxes for card, glass, tins etc? Are they always full?

WeAllHaveWings · 11/02/2018 16:47

Our council only gives out extra bins if they come and audit what you are putting in your bin for 3 uplifts to make sure you are recycling fully (our household bin is only lifted every 3 weeks so that would be a 9 week audit).

Our plastics box is over full when collected weekly. Really highlights how there is too much plastic in this world! Sad

The food bin in the kitchen is a small counter top bin which is lined with a council provided compostable bag and emptied daily or every 2nd day. If it starts to smell its straight outside, we find this is less smelly than food in the kitchen bin which needs emptied less due to no food in it.

OP if you have no glass bottles/jars, paper/cardboard, plastic, tin/cans or food in your bin, honestly (other than nappies, or dog poo bags in our case) what is in it?

GabsAlot · 11/02/2018 16:48

we dont even get a bin just have to put out black bags so i think u maybe need to buy your own
