Won't give me another wheelie bin...

Bins here are collected weekly. EVERY Sunday without fail my wheelie bin is full. (There collected Thursday) several times local cats (I believe) have managed to get the bags out the wheelie bin as they are open with the bags on top because they are over flowing. Anyway these cats will rip out all my rubbish so the garden will be covered. I called the council and asked for another wheelie bin as several neighbours have more than one of the same colour top bins. I was told I wasn't allowed another one and the ones the neighbours had were "obviously stolen!" Aibu to not see why I can't have another one. And before any one suggests I recycle more I do I recycle everything that can be and I have no car to go to a tip.

Just to echo other posters - we are a family of 5 and manage fine with one bin collected fortnightly! We recycle everything we can and compost our food and garden waste. Sounds like you need to do more to manage your waste.

LanguidLobster · 11/02/2018 15:43

Plate you've confused me now.

Skip? Tip? Last place I lived I was told you could drop off any extra black binbags at the skip/tip. I never had to do this but was aware this might be an option.

CheesecakeAddict · 11/02/2018 15:44

You are very lucky that it gets collected. We would have to pay for a second wheely bin. We did when ours got stolen. They also refuse to empty bins if the lid doesn't shut all the way and they come only every other week.

PiggyGoesToMarket · 11/02/2018 15:44

We’re the same family of 5, we fill 2 wheelie bins each week - we ended up with 2 as ours went missing for a week, got a new one and a week later original one turned up... Our council don’t provide recycling bins so if you don’t drive it’s hard to recycle much.

astoundedgoat · 11/02/2018 15:46

I get lazy about recycling from time to time and my landfill volume goes up a LOT. Then I revise everything that can be recycled/composted and it's astonishing how the landfill element of our waste goes down immediately.

I think the main thing here is that you take a look at the council website which should list everything that can be recycled and start being more militant about dividing your waste. It's highly unlikely that your family, even if all 5 are adults, is filling an entire wheelie with landfill in 4 days.

Shadowboy · 11/02/2018 15:46

Our black bin is collected for nightly and it’s smaller than our green recycling bin and we manage with no issues but we recycle lots!

There are 4 of us so a standard sized family.

Yes, YABU. One lot of council tax = 1 bin. You're lucky yours get collected weekly - ours is fortnightly.

FancyNewBeesly · 11/02/2018 15:46

I don’t get it - what fills up your bin every week? We have twins in nappies and manage with a fortnightly collection (the recycling tends to be a tight squeeze!). Is there something really bulky that’s causing an issue?

NerrSnerr · 11/02/2018 15:47

Do you have a recycling bin as well? We have two children in nappies and still manage fine with a fortnightly collection. We found using the food recycling box as well really helped (especially with a fussy toddler).

RandomUsernameHere · 11/02/2018 15:48

Where we live collections are fortnightly and you're only allowed an extra bin for households of 6 or more. That sounds like a lot of rubbish, do you have DCs in nappies or something?

Cameron07 · 11/02/2018 15:48

We bought our extra bins on eBay, and never had a problem since. We have four bins we rotate so always two empty as children have left and gone to uni.council wouldn't give us extra so had to do something .

PNGirl · 11/02/2018 15:50

Actually, our one black bin isn't free either! You have to pay £30 when you move in.

Wolfiefan · 11/02/2018 15:50

As a PP says. One lot of council tax paid equals one bin.
We have one bin, four people and three pets. Emptied fortnightly.
You need to look at reducing the amount of waste you produce.

LanguidLobster · 11/02/2018 15:50

I think I'm a bit spoilt as I have a bin all to myself so it's never full up. Council haven't left a recycling bin but I use the neighbours, I figured they wouldn't mind as it's only recycling.

Jasharps · 11/02/2018 15:51

I can't believe you need another bin with weekly collections! We are 3 weekly, a family of 6 with 2 still wearing nappies and I've only ever gone over our bin when we missed a collection. So effectively 6 weeks!!! You need to review your recycling and waste.

In all honesty i am glad councils do this, we need to be far more proactive and responsible for waste

BookHelpPlease · 11/02/2018 15:53

How on earth would a cat lift a bin bag out of a wheelie bin? Rip a bag open- yes but actually lift a whole black bin bag out of the bin Confused

ThisLittleKitty · 11/02/2018 15:53

Come to think of it I did notice a bag in there that wasn't mine the other day. Yes it the black bin, but I'm still over by 2/3 black bags a week. I say cats as I've noticed a few strays around. I must admit I don't use the green food waste bin. Good tip on saying it was stolen though wouldn't even have thought of it so that's what I'm going to do!

We have fortnightly rubbish collection , family of 4 adults and still manage on one normal sized bin . Our council will not let you buy extra bins apart from garden waste which you pay £40 a year for anyway , so you could pay £80 for 2 . If you are seriously filling a normal sized rubbish bin in 4 days then you are making too much waste / not recycling properly .

JenniferYellowHat1980 · 11/02/2018 15:54

We're a family of four and fill a bin once every three weeks, because that's how often it's emptied. You're sending far more than you need to to landfill. Granted our recycling is collected weekly, which may be more than yours.

ThisLittleKitty · 11/02/2018 15:54

No the bin is open because it's piled high with bags so it won't close

Have you got a mini or full sized wheelie bin?

Sparklingbrook · 11/02/2018 15:55

So you are going to lie and say you have had your bin stolen?

PuppyMonkey · 11/02/2018 15:55

Your bin is emptied on Thursday and full by Sunday!?Hmm

littlepeas · 11/02/2018 15:56

This thread has made me feel a bit queasy. So brazenly unembarassed about overflowing wheelie bin, despite a weekly collection. I would be mortified.
