Linda La Hughes in Gimme, Gimme, Gimme. I basically wanted to be her when I was a teenager. She was a sexually adventurous, single woman living in a gorgeous flat in London with a hilarious gay flatmate. She had body confidence, she gave zero fucks about what anyone else thought of her and she was unashamedly working class. I fucking loved her
Barbara in The Royle Family She is, I think, the most realistic, best-written character in all of TV history. She basically embodies every single working class, chain smoking, struggling, hard working mum that lived on my childhood estate. Her lines, her clothes, her behaviour, everything about her is completely spot on. Brilliant, observant writing from Caroline Aherne, Craig Cash and Phil Mealey
Uncle Bryn in Gavin and Stacey. He's just so lovely. He cares deeply about everyone around him, he puts himself out so much for everyone even though most people around him (Nessa, Stacey etc. are cunts). There's an underlying sadness there which is both fascinating and also hilarious. I like the ambiguity around his sexuality.
Thanks for this thread, OP, really made me smile
