To love my ginger hair?

All through school I was mocked for my hair colour, I hated it and prayed that if I had children they wouldn't be ginger. I dyed it blonde/brown/bright red when I was old enough (not at same time!)

It wasn't until I was an adult and working in an industry that involved people from other countries that I started getting compliments about my natural colour, I've not dyed it for a few years now and love it! It's not JUST 'ginger', it's reds/blonds/browns/golds all intertwined.

Even now I hear people say 'I hope my baby is not ginger' and I've even had a 'friend' tell me they'd drown their baby if it was ginger (in apparent jest). It's not OK to say that about skin colour/disabilities/sexual orientation, so why is it socially acceptable to say it about children with red hair???

Anyway, no point to this except to say

EMBRACE YOUR GINGER HAIR!

YANBU. Ginger hair is gorgeous.

twiney · 30/12/2017 15:14

Amen sister ! As someone with mousy hair (is it brown? Is it blonde? Is it dirty?) I've always admired ginger hair although I think i would struggle with the "electric orange" variety.

I'm not ginger but I hate people slagging off gingerness.

isseywithcats · 30/12/2017 15:15

you could be repeating me to a tee, a a ginger kid i hated my hair, wanted the lovely straight black hair that asian girls have, my mom used to say at least yours dosent come out of a bottle, women pay pounds to get red hair, now im 61 and still got a lot of the strawberry blonde colouring left in my hair without dye, and my friends in thier fifties are using dye to cover the grey, im very happy to be a red, still tell people off if they call it ginger though still a word i hate

Tinselistacky · 30/12/2017 15:16

My dd has ginger hair and proud!!

Baubletrouble43 · 30/12/2017 15:17

My best friend, dp, 3 stepkids and possibly one of my twins ( hard to tell yet, 1 year old and only just getting wispy hair) have red hair. I love it, it's beautiful. Wear it with pride x

WorraLiberty · 30/12/2017 15:17

These threads always go the same way

People will clamber over themselves to say they were 'gutted' 'in floods of tears' 'really disappointed' that their own kids weren't born ginger.

While others will positively gush about it.

It's just a hair colour but I do think it's weird how some people can hate or love it with such passion.

Redsrule · 30/12/2017 15:17

I love my hair colour, I like to call it Titian rather than ginger though, and DS and DD2 both have it and it seems to cause them few problems. However, years ago, in Egypt on holiday, it did mean we were constantly followed by local children! Both DS and Dd2 seem to be very popular socially so I am not sure it has the same stigma it did when I was a child. Just play people Minchin's Prejudice!

SleepForTheWeek · 30/12/2017 15:18

Let's see your ginger hair!!

Yes my mum and hairdresser used to always say how much money people would spend for hair like mine but as a child/teenager I would never have believed them

To love my ginger hair?

And by the way I agree with you about outrageous comments. Anyone said that near me I'd set them straight!

Namechangetempissue · 30/12/2017 15:20

Red hair is BEAUTIFUL!

Snowtato · 30/12/2017 15:22

I absolutely love red hair.

Allthetuppences · 30/12/2017 15:23

I have 2 ginger daughters who have a stepfather. People actually think it's ok to say "beat them like a red headed step child" and various insults. The main one is the red heads = short fuse or bad temper that I had to deal with from my own mother as a child. She's dead now Wink

Scotstar · 30/12/2017 15:27

My 4 month-old little boy is a ginger. Neither me or his dad have so it was a shock but, along with his dark blue eyes, he is absolutely gorgeous! We've already had lots of comments and people calling him strawberry blonde etc but he's a ginger and we will be teaching him to rightly be super proud of it!

hevonbu · 30/12/2017 15:27

This "ginger hair"-mocking going on must be a very English (British?) thing, surely? Why is that?

I'm from abroad, so the only thing I associate with "ginger" are "ginger snap cookies", very yummy, ginger-coloured cookies, a staple of my country's Christmas festive season. Recipe here: www.thelocal.se/20171207/how-to-make-your-own-gingersnaps

Mugshotzforlunch · 30/12/2017 15:28

I have coveted red hair all my life and would be loved dds hair to be red...but alas she's dark blonde.
My cousins dd is red and when she was born she was just horrible, saying she couldn't wait to colour it etc.
3 of my dearest friends are red in varying degrees and very proud.

KiaOraAura · 30/12/2017 15:29

My hairdresser always says that red heads should embrace their wonderful colour. As he pointed out, most of us spend many years years trying to get rid of it, and the rest of our lives trying to recreate it. Mine faded in my 30s and is now more at the blonde end of strawberry blonde. DD has dyed her fantastic red/blonde hair a really dark brown for years Sad

ForagingForFaerieGold · 30/12/2017 15:29

I love my red hair. Hate the word "ginger" though possibly because of the negative connotations it's been given. I do get stroppy if my hair is referred to as "ginger".
Should probably learn to let it go Grin

Nicpem1982 · 30/12/2017 15:31

My dds (3) hair colour sounds not dissimilar to the op it's red with hints of blonds browns and golds and it's gorgeous!

She gets loads of compliments when she's out, I hope that's when's she's in school she's not subject to the teasing that my dh and other red heads were. She's a confident little lady and I would hate for this to get knocked at school

Greenglassteacup · 30/12/2017 15:32

I love red / ginger / auburn hair, it's so beautiful. Mine is a boring dark brown.

April229 · 30/12/2017 15:32

I would kill for ginger hair, be proud!

SleepForTheWeek · 30/12/2017 15:34

@hevonbu yes it's a very British thing. I'm in Scotland (which incidentally has one of the highest rates of red hair)

Love the link - thanks 😂

@Sleep That might explain a lot in my (foreign) eyes, Hadrian's wall, Mary Queen of Scots, and all that.

isthismummy · 30/12/2017 15:44

Yanbu. I love ginger hair. Red headed men are so sexy.

Inkythemouse · 30/12/2017 21:46

Ds1 has strawberry blonde hair and has had nothing but compliments about it.
Dd has red streaks through very pale ginger/blonde hair and the amount of people who say negative things is unbelievable.

Winegumaddict · 30/12/2017 21:51

I dye mine ginger. It's a non descript moist brown naturally (I think, it's been years since I saw it). It goes a red ish colour in the sun so now I dye it ginger. I love it and I have loads of people comment on it. My DM has ginger hair so I'm a but gutted I didn't get it too.
