To love my ginger hair?

All through school I was mocked for my hair colour, I hated it and prayed that if I had children they wouldn't be ginger. I dyed it blonde/brown/bright red when I was old enough (not at same time!)

It wasn't until I was an adult and working in an industry that involved people from other countries that I started getting compliments about my natural colour, I've not dyed it for a few years now and love it! It's not JUST 'ginger', it's reds/blonds/browns/golds all intertwined.

Even now I hear people say 'I hope my baby is not ginger' and I've even had a 'friend' tell me they'd drown their baby if it was ginger (in apparent jest). It's not OK to say that about skin colour/disabilities/sexual orientation, so why is it socially acceptable to say it about children with red hair???

Anyway, no point to this except to say

EMBRACE YOUR GINGER HAIR!

I have red hair too. I love it now, but I have heard the horrible comments over the years. As if I have a choice with how I was born. Now I don't give a fuck if people don't like my pale skin, freckles, pale eye lashes etc. They can fuck off.

I've had people say to me: "If I found out that my baby was going to be ginger, I'd have an abortion."

...."So long as the baby's not ginger, we'll be alright." That was said on One born every minute.

I mean, what the actual fuck is wrong with people? I'm just a person.

ForalltheSaints · 31/12/2017 10:08

I have two friends who married ginger haired women, and doubt if their preferences are unique. I'm sure Ed Sheeran will have reduced any irrational hatred towards ginger hair too.

Cobblersandhogwash · 31/12/2017 10:17

I love ginger/red hair. It's stunning.

hollyisalovelyname · 31/12/2017 10:29

Ollivander
Your hair is beautiful.
The colour and condition of it is just awesome.

Rebeccaslicker · 31/12/2017 10:32

I have the most gorgeous gay ginger friend who used to be a colleague (he used to turn the font orange when he emailed me!) who bought me this for my birthday:

Mxyzptlk I've double checked the thread and no-one said ruder comments are ok? Confused

FloControl · 31/12/2017 11:33

I used to work with a girl with long red hair. She wore it in a pony tail most the time but when she let it loose you could see several shades of auburn, ginger and strawberry blonde all blended. Beautiful. I haven't seen her for years but I hope it hasn't changed. Miss her enormously too but that's another story.

I took this picture yesterday morning of our ginger boy sleeping with a ginger kitty. ❤️

Worra I don’t think your post was rude but it was most definitely mean.

Thetreesareallgone · 31/12/2017 12:25

steff and mother gorgeous children! I love the way the hair literally glows in the sun/catches the light.

Summerisdone · 31/12/2017 12:39

YANBU ginger hair imo is the most beautiful colour hair there is.
I was born a natural dark brown and have ruined my hair many a times trying to get the perfect fake ginger.
I also unconsciously navigate towards ginger people, most of my closest friends have been ginger, right from primary school. I used to think this must be why I love ginger hair, but now I’ve started to wonder if it’s because I love the person’s hair that I want to befriend them in the first place Grin

Microwaved111 · 31/12/2017 12:44

I have ginger hair and I was mercilessly bullied at school. Even know in my late 20's I get the odd comment!

I've never dyed it and I love my hair. It's natural and thick with lots of volume something most people I know don't have! I will never change it, why would I want to be like everyone else with eitgerbbrown or blonde hair. Boring.

SnowyBerries · 31/12/2017 12:48

Dd hasn't had any problems at primary school, apart from one mean comment "You've got the hair colour no one likes." It was three years ago though and nothing since. I really hope this continues at secondary when she starts in September. It's a worry though. I remember a secondary teacher posting on one of these threads that the nastiest bullying she'd seen in recent years was against kids with ginger hair. I may even email the school and ask if it's a problem. Dd1 thinks not.

yawning801 · 31/12/2017 12:49

Your hair is beautiful OP!

I have a kind of a dirty blonde mop that gets darker if it gets greasy for any reason. It also goes very dark when wet, almost brunette. It used to be almost white when I was little, but as I went through my pre-teens and teens it got darker and darker!

Yeah thanks for saying the rest of us who are blonde or brunette are "boring". You can appreciate your red hair without putting others down, you know Hmm

KenForPM · 31/12/2017 18:11

Compared to the nasty names most redheads have had to put up with, “boring” is really quite mild.

marymoosmum · 31/12/2017 19:10

I love ginger hair, my DH is ginger and I am gutted that neither of my children haven't taken after him, well my DD hasn't, there is still time for my DS yet. It's my favourite hair colour.

ILikeyourHairyHands · 31/12/2017 19:14

I love ginger hair, it's strong in my family but only on the male line, my brothers are both ginger and have never suffered from any lack of interest.

Sadly the women are dark brunettes who are prone to silver at the age of 30.

mishfish · 31/12/2017 19:19

My youngest has auburn hair and I’m desperate for it to go ginger

lurkingnotlurking · 31/12/2017 19:22

It pisses me off hearing how people with non-red hair wish theirs was red. I took so much shit from other children growing up. As for all the adults who said my hair was so beautiful... who cared? I love it now and yes it's fading.

goose1964 · 31/12/2017 19:23

At school only one girl in our group did not have any red in her hair,we want from strawberry blonde through proper red to my light brown with a reddish cast (aka mouse). One of my friends now dyes her hair blonde and has done so for years. Her son has inherited her red hair and a friend of hers asked me if I knew where he had inherited his gorgeous red hair from. She couldn't believe that our friend was a redhead. I've always assumed that hat people mocking red/ginger hair are just jealous

Screamer1 · 31/12/2017 19:23

I love love love all forms of red / ginger hair hair. You should all feel lucky and wear it with pride!
