DH of CF knew that the whole thing had been made weird now, and to just give it to his father as originally intended was less positive than it had originally been intended to be, so I think he handled it well.

I don't think there is anything to be gained by disbelieving CF's DH's story.

I think that's been very graciously handled by the DH of CF - she sounds like a truly awful person and I can't imagine why he would want to be married to someone who was willing to deprive his poor father of some happiness to line her own pockets 😡

Roughly translated then, she's being enabled still by everyone around her and gets to take zero responsibility for her actions . Still, if you feel happy about it OP, that's all that matters. Hopefully a lesson learned about friendship, and a good excuse to never gift her anything again.

Or they sold it, creamed some off the top and placated with a part payment. Of course CF's DH might just be the moral crusader he appears to be

I think CFDH has handled this well.
He could have embarrassed his CF wife by making her apologise or explain but he didn't.
I think the amount he paid OP is reasonable considering that she wouldn't have actually sold the item.

As long as CF didn't spin it to FIL that mean old you made them pay for the item that she would have given to a friend for nothing, etc.

Well OP can ask the Fil when they next cross paths. She can notchantly say, did you like the ram castrator your son bought you? CF DH can't hide it forever. He may be a bit CF himself but it sounds to me his friends mean more than a bit of money.

They might have sold it for 3x as much, so what they've given you could be a drop in the ocean.
