To be pissed off about Depp casting

He doesn't bring in the money at the box office (no more than a lot of other choices). He is abusive towards women (proven in court & caught on camera).
Why has the director of Fantastic beasts brushed it off as he's 'full of decency'. No, abusers are not full of decency.
This is the director who changed a black actress for a white one when the role became bigger so it's not about continuity.

I'm surprised at how angry this has made me, but I'm furious he's being given a free pass on this.

I was a huge fan of his until he left his partner to be with Amber Heard. It just all seemed very cringey. Then after what happened there, he makes me feel sick. I'm boycotting any film he is in.

hamptonhangingpork · 08/12/2017 08:28

I preferred Colin Farrell as Grindelwald and cringed at the big reveal (spoiler alert for my previous sentence). Johnny Depp pulling in another Captain Jack Sparrow / Willy Wonka performance is the worst kind of lazy casting.

Jk Rowling comes across badly with her standing up for him, especially since she has directed opprobrium towards other people who have allegedly committed offences but not charged.

cough trump etc.

deepestdarkestperu · 08/12/2017 08:29

Do you feel the same about all the other actors who have been charged with domestic violence and still continue to act and earn millions?

saltandvinegarcrisps1 · 08/12/2017 08:29

I now just see him as a pathetic knob tbh.

Justanothernameonthepage · 08/12/2017 08:33

Deepest, yes I do but if you could provide a list of them that would be helpful.

A lot of it is to do with how normally JK is supportive of the abused and now she's siding with an abuser.

I totally ageee with you. I’m the biggest HP nerd, but I don’t think I’ll be paying to see this one sadly.

Laiste · 08/12/2017 08:33

It's a shame. He was lovely.

He's like a piece of spoiled fruit now. Rotten on the inside.

Justanothernameonthepage · 08/12/2017 08:35

I suddenly want a lot more movies cast with Terry Crews and Patrick Stewart...

J.K. Rowling stament is pathetic

steff13 · 08/12/2017 08:37

Full of decency is a very strange turn of phrase.

cdvegan2023 · 08/12/2017 08:46

Rowling's just another mega rich champagne socialist idiot. Remember the time when they wanted to cast a black woman in the play?

RidingWindhorses · 08/12/2017 08:47

I believe Amber Heard. I find it so odd that abuse is normalised and accepted.

I've never understood the hooha around Johnny Depp anyway.

Sadly, yeah.

SaskiaRembrandtWasFramed · 08/12/2017 08:49

I've not seen the film, but did they switch Colin Farrell for Johnny Depp? Was this part of the storyline or just random swapping? If the latter it seems like an odd choice, people still like Colin Farrell, well I do.

gabsdot · 08/12/2017 08:52

Saskia
It turned out that Colin Farrell's Character was actually Grindlewald and when the spell he had been using to mask his true identity wore off he was Johnny Depp as Grindlewald.

Rudgie47 · 08/12/2017 08:56

I think JK Rowling is an idiot, I thought she had been in a violent relationship herself. If so she should understand and not be employing him.
Basically hes crap anyway.
I thinks shes made her money, has her big castle on the Tay and doesnt care.

astoundedgoat · 08/12/2017 09:06

He's still the face of a Dior (?) men's fragrance and it just seems so odd to me.

"Men! Do you want to smell like an abusive alcoholic, ageing as badly as he possibly can through his continued bad choices and obnoxious behaviour?"

I'm sorry but did she actually refer to her own work in that Tweet as a "canon". A canon? Hmm Not much of an ego there then.

deepestdarkestperu · 08/12/2017 09:08

There are thousands of them I believe - if you google there are lists of them all and what they've been charged with.

Nicolas Cage, Charlie Sheen, Johnny Depp, Emma Roberts, Christian Slater - to name a few off the top of my head!

Igneococcus · 08/12/2017 09:09

I never understood why he was cast in the first place, even before the DV issue became public. In the HP movies there was a lot of emphasis on casting British actors, or actors where the background matches their role, like Fleur was played by a French actress. So why is an American cast for s someone whi is Swiss or central European, going by the name at least? Going by that Colin Farrell wouldn't be quite right either but a lot better than Depp.

honeyroar · 08/12/2017 09:10

I was gutted the character changed actors anyway, CF has done a great role and he's such a lovely person (met him twice).

ReanimatedSGB · 08/12/2017 09:10

I think there is some legal constraint regarding exactly how much freedom of speech JK Rowling has on this topic. I wouldn't be at all surprised if she not only has no power of veto at all over casting, but has some sort of contract which forbids her to criticize the directors/producers or their choices.
Also, any film production employs loads and loads of other people, who all need their wages paying. There's a saying my co-parent quotes a lot (which irritates me anyway) along the lines of 'it's only a principle when it costs you money'. I'm not so keen on 'standing up for a principle' that's going to cost OTHER (guilty of nothing) people money.

CaptainHammer · 08/12/2017 09:11

JK’s statement about it made me so angry.
She’s always been a big voice against people like Trump etc I thought she’d have been better than this.

Raisedbyguineapigs · 08/12/2017 09:17

I was disappointed even before the dv allegations too. He's well past his best. But since then, to say the 'allegations don't match the man they're working with ' is a stupid thing to say. If course they don't. He's at work. All the casting is a bit lazy imo. Jude Law and Eddie Redmayne sounds like they've just gone for the same old crew when you look at the Star Wars casting for example.
