To be pissed off about Depp casting

He doesn't bring in the money at the box office (no more than a lot of other choices). He is abusive towards women (proven in court & caught on camera).
Why has the director of Fantastic beasts brushed it off as he's 'full of decency'. No, abusers are not full of decency.
This is the director who changed a black actress for a white one when the role became bigger so it's not about continuity.

I'm surprised at how angry this has made me, but I'm furious he's being given a free pass on this.

I agree. They are all such one note past their best actors. I doubt Dumbledore was a mockney wide boy either.

GwenStaceyRocks · 09/12/2017 10:21

I actually thought Jude Law would be a good Dumbledore. Dumbledore wasn't a particularly nice character. imo he was selfish, manipulative and glory-seeking. I'm a bit sad I won't see Law's version because of Depp.

FlashTheSloth · 09/12/2017 23:22

I think Dumbledore wasn't exactly whiter than white in his yoof. So maybe that's why they've gone for this casting. I think he basically ditched his family in pursuit of power, Aberforth said as much in DHpt2. He was interested in power, had an embarrasing family (squib sister and murderer father), frollocked about with his gay lover then ultimately had to kill him. Before Grindlewald became really bad, I suspect Dumbledore went down that path himself. It's probably a very different character from the HP version.

GwenStaceyRocks · 10/12/2017 07:45

Obviously I meant I'm sad I won't see Law's version of Dumbledore Grin

JK Rowling tends to be a pretty good judge of character. None of us know what actually went on in Depp's and Heard's marriage and he hasn't been convicted of anything. Maybe Rowling knows more about what really happened than some anonymous posters on here do?

I like Depp as an actor and that hasn't changed.

Doubt I'll see the film because I haven't seen any of the other HP films, but Depp's presence wouldn't put me off, somewhat the reverse. He's one of the reasons I went to see Murder on the Orient Express the other week. Depp was very good.

I wonder how much of the negativity towards Rowling on this thread come from those like the PP who are clearly right wing Trump fans (noone else would use or justify using a word like libtard) and looking for any excuse to attack Rowling because of her (highly successful and witty) attacks on Trump?

gwondle · 10/12/2017 08:28

I'm certainly not convinced that posters who justify using words like libtard are suddenly all caring about women's rights. Hmm

woofmiaowwoof · 10/12/2017 08:30

Don’t forget all the yes voters in the Scottish referendum that loathe Rowling - there are a fair few on here, she’s hated by some for that.

I love Rowling, everything up til now but as I said this looks like a bad call to me - hopefully there is more to it but us muggles will have to trust our betters as we’ll never find out!

Givemeonereason · 10/12/2017 08:30

@FlashTheSloth his sister wasn't a squib and he didn't kill grindelwald. Sorry I'm mad into Harry Potter and this bugged me Grin

All that aside, I actually hated Fantastical beasts. I thought it wasn't engaging, entertaining or particularly good in any way. I was unimpressed but thought I'd keep watching until depp appeared then i knew the films weren't for me.

I used to love JD. I'm shocked by what he has become (or always was). He looks terrifying and he looks crazed.

gwondle · 10/12/2017 13:19

Well, his ex wife, who ought to know and has good reason to say otherwise if it were true, has stood by Depp and said he was never, ever abusive.

I'm sure he's an odd fish, but until such point as he's been convicted of anything, which he isn't, internet accusations aren't going to stop me seeing and enjoying him in any films.

RidingWindhorses · 10/12/2017 15:30

Someone can be abusive with one person and not with another.

He had a very different kind of relationship with Amber from what I heard - passionate and volatile with rows etc, and he felt very insecure with her. But he's always had a tendency to lose it apparently, that was nothing new.

RidingWindhorses · 10/12/2017 15:32

I couldn't really be less of a Trump fan btw, what a funny idea.

I like JK Rowling as it happens, I don't like HP but that's personal taste, I admire her achievement and getting so many children so enthusiastic about her books.

I just think this was a bad call.

Agree, but also on a less important note Im disappointed at the lack of imagination. There are lots of amazing up and come-ers out there so its a bit wet to hire holywood elite who are bigger than their role so make it harder to suspend disbelief

RidingWindhorses · 10/12/2017 20:29

And maybe Vanessa is still in love with him and didn't want to see him publically vilified - the father of her kids - despite the fact he'd ditched her.

If she had been conciliatory and been good at placating him - maybe Amber didn't have the patience or feel like she should have to. Perhaps when he yelled, she yelled, things escalated and they came to blows.
