To be pissed off about Depp casting

He doesn't bring in the money at the box office (no more than a lot of other choices). He is abusive towards women (proven in court & caught on camera).
Why has the director of Fantastic beasts brushed it off as he's 'full of decency'. No, abusers are not full of decency.
This is the director who changed a black actress for a white one when the role became bigger so it's not about continuity.

I'm surprised at how angry this has made me, but I'm furious he's being given a free pass on this.

Also, if we honestly started boycotting everything that was offensive or dangerous on some level to someone we’d be living in mud huts with no technology. The world sucks. I say just strap on a huge dollop of cognitive dissonance and enjoy life while you can.

HoneyIshrunkthebiscuit · 08/12/2017 10:06

Nicolas cage was arrested in 2011 for domestic battery

Steve seagals ex wife had claimed he was abusive throughout their marriage. He’s also been sued for sexual harassment and assault multiple times.

Woody Allen abused his adopted daughter then married his step daughter when she became 18 though it is long believed they were involved from when she was 13/14

Ozzy osbourne has been arrested for domestic violence

James’s Brown was arrested for DV in 2004

Gary Busey was arrested for DV in 1999 and 2001. Was still crowned winner of CBB in 2014

Vanilla Ice has been arrested for DV 3 times

Josh Brolin was arrested for DV in 2004

Terrence Howard was arrested for DV in 2001

Floyd mayweather jr was arrested for DV in 2010. He had previously been arrested for grand larceny, battery and harassment.

This is just the surface

cdvegan2023 · 08/12/2017 10:11

I’ve noticed you referred to JK as a “libtard” - what does that term actually mean?

A hypocrite, someone who thinks they are liberal but in fact they are far from it, someone who hates freedom of speech and opinion, someone who sees anyone who isn't white, male and straight as a victim and plays the identity politics game without once stopping to think if that maybe the world is more nuanced than that. As in the Trump/islam example in my previous post. An illiberal.

Nyx1 · 08/12/2017 10:15

I was also amazed to see Sean Penn, Mel Gibson back doing the rounds.

Is Depp still a box office draw? I guess Dior didn't pull those ads, and even with the huge irony of them....

SaskiaRembrandtWasFramed · 08/12/2017 10:15

gabsdot, thanks for clearing that up Smile

Dadstheworld · 08/12/2017 10:16

Depp has been cleared hasn't he?

HoneyIshrunkthebiscuit · 08/12/2017 10:20

dads no they reached a settlement out of court meaning he almost definitely did it. There’s video evidence.

woofmiaowwoof · 08/12/2017 10:20

if liberals are libtards, what are Corbynites? A less tolerant bunch I've yet to meet.

I love JK Rowling, generally agree with her about most things but even I'm a bit meh about this. I read the statement, I don't think it's good enough. I understand her hands are tied legally, but it's not good enough.

I wonder if Depp threatened to sue them if they dropped him on the basis it was settled out of court/non-disclosure agreements and his people made it clear they were going to make a massive fuss?

Even so...

HoneyIshrunkthebiscuit · 08/12/2017 10:21

Can we not use the phrase libtard and it’s clear where the ‘tard’ part of the word comes from Hmm

AnachronisticCorpse · 08/12/2017 10:22

Er, Libtard is a portmanteau of Liberal and another word that I’m not willing to type.

Do behave.

woofmiaowwoof · 08/12/2017 10:22

the thing about out of court settlements though is that it's not a criminal conviction, so we think it is an admission, but legally it isn't, is it? Just means someone accepted a pay off

AnachronisticCorpse · 08/12/2017 10:22

X post Honey.

lborgia · 08/12/2017 10:23

You may have issue with the fact that libtard is blend of liberal and retard though. Not a word that is much loved in the UK these days.

nolongersurprised · 08/12/2017 10:23

cdvegan Thanks for clearing that up - I’d foolishly assumed it was a neologism based on liberal + retard which always seemed ironic (as well as offensive) as most people who use it seem to be deeply right-wing and functionally illiterate.

lborgia · 08/12/2017 10:24

There you go, x-post and obviously I have crossed a line. If it needs it come down, let me know.

Lalalandfill · 08/12/2017 10:25

I work in the entertainment industry and know a bit about this partnership. There are nuances to relationships. I'm not usually a huge fan of JKR but she is correct not to allow the mob, who know nothing about what really went on, to shout her down.

GwenStaceyRocks · 08/12/2017 10:25

It isn't impossible to avoid films with abusive actors. tbh I find that an even poorer excuse - 'oh well lots of actors are abusive'. We don't need to give money to any of the films that cast them. I have no doubt that if their movies tanked at the box office then the producers/directors/casting agents would suddenly develop a conscience.
Perhaps someone should start a petition so people can sign to say they're not attending. Numbers, money and protests outside the cinemas might have an impact when appealing to decency hasn't worked.
It's a pity none of the other cast members were on per movie contracts and could have spoken out like Gal Gadot did for Wonder Woman.

moutonfou · 08/12/2017 10:26

Like a PP has said his performances are so lazy. He can only play one character.

woofmiaowwoof · 08/12/2017 10:28

i do think, if someone with as much money as Rowling has, couldn't afford to take a stand for fear of reprisals, or loss of profits, then who can? We can not pay to see it, but i doubt that'll seriously hurt takings.

lborgia · 08/12/2017 10:30

lala, you did not just say that the Depp relationship was “nuanced” to justify her black eyes etc.? No, I’m sure you didn’t , but I dont’ understand what you ARE saying.

The crux of it is that Depp is guilty of hitting a partner. More than once. His general behaviour towards his wife, and then girlfriends does not appear, at 1st, 2nd, or 3rd glance to be admirable.

RidingWindhorses · 08/12/2017 10:30

Er, Libtard is a portmanteau of Liberal and another word that I’m not willing to type.

This. Please don't defend its usage cdvegan

hamptonhangingpork · 08/12/2017 10:32

It's really interesting reading replies about convictions and convictions vs pay offs.

A quick Google reveals that there is a 5.7% conviction rate for reported rapes in the UK. Does that mean that 94.3% of people who are brought to court are wholly innocent?

OJ was acquitted of murdering two people in the nineties. Why wasn't he working after this. I mean, by the logic of some people on this thread, he was totally innocent right?

Just don't be black and call someone a homophobic slur in an argument on set, you'll be out of Hollywood so fast. Ask Isiah Washington.

Be white and rap it to your hearts' content and you'll get a movie and Elton John will perform with you at an awards' show.

GretchenFranklin · 08/12/2017 10:32

I actually loved Fantastic Beasts - right up until that over-acting tosspot appeared.

And what a disgrace that Rowling endorses this talentless abuser Angry

IMightMentionGriddlebone · 08/12/2017 10:33

cdvegan2023

but someone posted a quote clearly stating her face is white.

With fear. If you read it literally, in context, and treat the author's every word as infallible, that section still leaves it open that Hermione is mixed race, and goes visibly paler when scared.

If you don't treat her as infallible, then it's easy to accept that she meant to leave Hermione's race undetermined or imagined her as black, and then was completely thoughtless about all that three books later when she was trying to show the reader that Hermione was scared in a more sophisticated way than directly typing "Hermione looked scared".

Your misreading of 'canon' has been covered by another MNer, so I won't go into that.

DontDrinkDontSmoke · 08/12/2017 10:34

I think libtard is a common insult in USA used by Trump supporters for democrats. Retard/moron and the like don’t seem to be deemed as quite so offensive across the pond.
