To be pissed off about Depp casting

He doesn't bring in the money at the box office (no more than a lot of other choices). He is abusive towards women (proven in court & caught on camera).
Why has the director of Fantastic beasts brushed it off as he's 'full of decency'. No, abusers are not full of decency.
This is the director who changed a black actress for a white one when the role became bigger so it's not about continuity.

I'm surprised at how angry this has made me, but I'm furious he's being given a free pass on this.

Thanks for that link NotACleverName

Rather brilliantly the blocking made it into the media (see the comments on your linked tweet). What a disgraceful way to behave. It was a perfectly legitimate tweet and blocking someone for that seems so petulate in my opinion particularly if you are holding yourself out as "an influencer".

Something has gone very wrong with Jonny Depp. He used to be decent - he was pretty good in a film about a 1930s gangster. But since leaving his family he seems to have veered off course. Absolutely agree he should be kept off our screens I don't want to have to keep seeing his horrible face.

Cannot believe he is advertising perfume he looks like he needs a a good wash.

We need a fresh sweep of male Hollywood stars I imagine there are thousands of hungry actors in LA who manage not to beat women up can we see them on screen please.

ShowMePotatoSalad · 08/12/2017 14:41

I would rather watch an abuser on a film screen knowing he can't hurt anyone than see one in a doctors office, a court, a classroom, an office etc.

WTF have I just read? With all the recent news are you completely unaware of how horrific it has been for women working alongside these people? What do you mean you know they can't hurt anyone...they HAVE been hurting people, a huge amount of people. And just because those women work in the film industry too doesn't mean they are fair game.

Seriously that is one of the most ridiculous and awful comments I have read on this site for a long time.

curryforbreakfast · 08/12/2017 14:47

I would support casting directors refusing to cast any and all actors who have been guilty of abuse, violence and/or sexual assault but only if all other industries refused to employ them too

Don't they actually have to be found guilty in a real court and not by the media?

Is he guilty? Probably. Most likely. But if we say its ok to not employ actors because of allegations that have never been proven properly, is it ok to do that to everyone? Would you be ok if you were alleged to have done something and were treated from that point as if you had been found guilty?
i suspect not.

Showmepotato

I'm obviously talking about while they are being directed/working. Anyone can do harm to others in their own time, working or not.

And much of what was in the media was in the media purely because the perpetrators are famous. It doesn't make the problem more prevelant in their industry. It is extremely unlikely that it has been more horrific for women in the industry working alongside these men than it has been for women in other working environments working alongside similar, but non famous, men.

As people in a position to demonstrate abuse of power, actors are pretty low down the list. In fact, they're far more likely to suffer from abuse of power themselves at the hands of directors, producers, casting agents etc.

Many men (and a few women, I suppose) are a risk to women (and some other men). But you can't pick on one (pretty innocuous compared to many) profession and hold them to different rules and standards.

There's no way that's an opinion that's one on the most awful things you've seen here - unless you're not here very much I suppose!

manicinsomniac · 08/12/2017 15:14

curry - I completely agree with you. Not sure if you think I don't or not.

ShowMePotatoSalad · 08/12/2017 15:16

I didn't say it was more horrific for them. It's not a competition.

curryforbreakfast · 08/12/2017 15:21

I was expanding on your well made point, manic. Sorry if that wasn't clear.

papayasareyum · 08/12/2017 15:25

JK Rowling is sanctimonious when it suits her and hypocritical when it suits her. She’s a law unto herself.

curryforbreakfast · 08/12/2017 15:33

she sounds like your average MNer then.

DailyMailReadersAreThick · 08/12/2017 15:52

I'm so disappointed in her statement. It's very clear she thinks Amber Heard lied and Johnny Depp is the victim - no way did she write that statement because of contractual obligations.

I hope enough decent people boycott this film to make an impact, although I doubt it.

GwenStaceyRocks · 08/12/2017 16:31

You're not holding one profession to different rules and standards. There are lots of jobs/careers that state you can't bring the company/business/product into disrepute. And, actually, I'd quite happily sack everyone who has been accused of DV and signed a statement to say their wife wasn't lying.
Until there is a zero tolerance policy on DV, it's just going to keep continuing.

I dunno on principle I can’t buy into the idea that anybody committing a crime of moral turpitude henceforth should be unemployed or denuded of a second chance.

This is different though, depp hasn’t admitted anything like you say except his wife wasn’t lying...

What can we hope for? That the stink on this makes other casting directors/movie companies think twice?

Interesting to see whether they re hire him.

Raisedbyguineapigs · 08/12/2017 17:49

bananas I agree with everything you say, and I hope you are right that independent films where they aren't afraid to take risks will become more common. I love film but the same old boring rehashed fare being churned out by the Hollywood machine hiring the same old same old over and over again is getting tiring. I hope this is a wakeup call.

custardlover · 08/12/2017 19:02

Given that JKR bought Depp's yacht a few years ago (www.cntraveler.com/story/jk-rowling-is-selling-her-20-million-yacht-with-interiors-by-johnny-depp) it may well be that they're friends.

RidingWindhorses · 08/12/2017 19:31

I don't have to boycott JD as I have always found him eerie. He's always been a weird lost manchild.

Now he's looking like a sleazy accordian player in a SPanish café.

GoingIn · 08/12/2017 19:45

This is the same Depp who used to get into physical fights with paparazzi and allegedly smashed a hotel room after an argument? Why should anyone be surprised or disappointed of his behaviour now if it's just a continuum of how he's been behaving for a long time.

SaskiaRembrandtWasFramed · 08/12/2017 21:28

There was also the alleged incident when an alleged girlfriend was allegedly shot in the ribs, allegedly.

CarlessFandango · 08/12/2017 23:18

I can't say I'm surprised at JKR's statement. She has past form for defending misogynistic trolls on Twitter. It seems she can overlook misogyny when it's her pals.

As to her being worried about legal repercussions if they recast JD, come on! She's worth billions, and boasts about having a "small island" of lawyers.

FlashTheSloth · 09/12/2017 00:00

Have never rated JD. I was gutted when he was revealed at the end of Fantastic Beasts, which I really enjoyed. I'm also gutted that young Dumbledore is Jude Law! Between Jude Law and Johnny Depp playing the 2 main characters, Fantastic Beasts has probably been ruined for me. It's a shame as Eddie Redmayne was brilliant.

woofmiaowwoof · 09/12/2017 08:12

Jude Law is young dumbledore? I can’t see that at all, he doesn’t convey warmth or care well. Gawd!

Agree re Remayne but on this evidence I shan’t be skipping to the cinema.

SylviaTietjens · 09/12/2017 08:16

Eddie Redmayne would’ve made a good young Dumbledore too. In fact if he could play every role in the film I’d be much more inclined to see it. It’s really disappointing as a huge HP fan to see JKR being a complete hypocrite.

makeourfuture · 09/12/2017 08:29

Was Dumbledore really a kind old grandfather?
