To be pissed off about Depp casting

He doesn't bring in the money at the box office (no more than a lot of other choices). He is abusive towards women (proven in court & caught on camera).
Why has the director of Fantastic beasts brushed it off as he's 'full of decency'. No, abusers are not full of decency.
This is the director who changed a black actress for a white one when the role became bigger so it's not about continuity.

I'm surprised at how angry this has made me, but I'm furious he's being given a free pass on this.

She's both writer and exec producer of the film and there are three more coming. She definitely has a casting veto.

lucysnowe · 08/12/2017 09:18

Kiosk I think she meant 'canon' in the fandom sense, i.e. 'officially sanctioned by the creators or in the original text'. Like it is 'canon' for Dumbledore to be gay cos Rowling said so.

megletthesecond · 08/12/2017 09:19

Yanbu. Colin Farrell did such a good job, and appears to be a pretty sensible bloke these days. The Johnny Depp moment had me rolling my eyes. Cast a shadow over the end of a good film.

HoneyIshrunkthebiscuit · 08/12/2017 09:22

They did cast a black herminonie and she was great. The play on the otherhand was not.

UtterlyRainbowed · 08/12/2017 09:22

Oh thank goodness it's not just me. I was seething! I wouldn't have paid to see the first one if I'd have known that he was going to appear.

WilyMinx · 08/12/2017 09:25

^ +Mark Wahlberg
Not domestic violence but assault

Hippobottymus · 08/12/2017 09:26

Just googled the list of abusive celebrity's. That's a list that seems to go on forever Sad really surprised by some of the names on there. I wish these crimes could get them blacklisted from acting or something similar. I suppose most aren't even being charged though

hamptonhangingpork · 08/12/2017 09:28

"Mark Wahlberg was convicted and spent time in jail for a racially aggravated assault".

He blinded a man of ethnic origin when he (Mark) was a teenager.

Fixed that for you, Wily.

SylviaTietjens · 08/12/2017 09:29

cdvegan the Hermione in the play is black. It’s not like they wanted to cast a black woman and JKR vetoed it Hmm.

Fully agree on the shitty casting of Depp though. I’m really surprised and disappointed at JKR sticking up for him. It seems the recent furore was only over sexual assault, you’re still allowed to be violent to women.

Raisedbyguineapigs · 08/12/2017 09:30

Mel Gibson gets my goat as well. He should never be cast in another film but a bit of a sabbatical and he's back. Again past his best and unpleasant but probably friends in high places.

curryforbreakfast · 08/12/2017 09:30

If you don't any actors allowed that have been accused of, convicted of, suspected of various crimes and bad actions you had better just shut down the entire industry.

TheNaze73 · 08/12/2017 09:36

Has Johnny Depp been convicted?

Sadly, money talks & it’s not surprise that one of the top 10 highest grossing box office actors of all time has been cast.

Mummyoflittledragon · 08/12/2017 09:39

I used to love Mel Gibson. Never a fan of Johnny Depp. Always thought he was a misogynist. Thought MG was different, married to mother of kids etc. Now I know differently. Out to pasture or glue factory should be the fate of any abuser. Not welcomed back into the fold. Yadnbu.

Mummyoflittledragon · 08/12/2017 09:40

curry
Alternatively produce more films with female roles as they’re less likely to offend.

I used to be a massive Johnny Depp fan, even when he stopped making decent films.

Not any more, I believe Amber.

He's nothing but a full of himself abusive alcoholic.

Nyx1 · 08/12/2017 09:46

I didn't see Orient Express for the exact same reason

did they start making that before what happened? Because I don't recall anyone criticising Branagh for casting him.

nolongersurprised · 08/12/2017 09:49

cdvegan

I’ve noticed you referred to JK as a “libtard” - what does that term actually mean?

RidingWindhorses · 08/12/2017 09:50

Another actor who got away with assault is John Hamm.

Hamm beat a man so violently in 'hazing' at uni that he fractured his spine and nearly lost a kidney. He was charged but I think managed to get some kind of suspended sentence. His victim left the uni and had to have counselling and the frat was disbanded, i think he is now a doctor.

Didiusfalco · 08/12/2017 09:57

There’s so much evidence he abused Amber Heard I don’t know how anyone could doubt it.

I’m another one avoiding his films- so disappointing what people are prepared to overlook.

HoneyIshrunkthebiscuit · 08/12/2017 09:57

Sean penn beat up Madonna with a baseball bat but we don’t seem to ever mention that.

John Lennon was abusive according to his son and first wife

HoneyIshrunkthebiscuit · 08/12/2017 09:58

Mel Gibson pleaded no contest to a battery charge against his ex wife in 2010. This Christmas you can see him in cinemas in ‘daddies Home 2’

Unfinishedkitchen · 08/12/2017 10:00

When I first saw the poster for Daddy’s Home 2 I thought it was a joke. Winona Ryder lost her career through stealing some Marc Jacobs clothes and Mark Whalberg blinds a Korean Man in a racial attack (has never said sorry) and Mel Gibson is an abusive anti-Semitic racist and they get a pass. Mel Gibson simply switched to working behind the camera and made even more money.

Add Polanski and Allen who have all of Hollywood supporting them and I have to wonder what it would take for a white male to get blacklisted in Hollywood? I’m certain Weinstein will be back before the decade is through.

AnachronisticCorpse · 08/12/2017 10:03

The trouble is, male violence is so so prevalent, particularly among rich white men and particularly towards women. If they stopped casting men who have been violent or abusive there’d be no male actors left and poor old Sir Patrick and maybe Tom Hanks would have to play all the roles.

It’s a bit of a no win until men stop hurting women and each other.

DontDrinkDontSmoke · 08/12/2017 10:05

J K Rowling is an utter hypocrite.

I’ve never understood why writing a few successful kids’ books suddenly makes her SOMEONE WE MUST LISTEN TO. Her statements on issues are usually at odds with my lines of thinking. Other people seem to lap her up though. Sigh.
