Help me settle an argument re: Christmas chocolates

We're going to my parents for Christmas and splitting the food shop between us (4 people plus baby) I've been tasked with getting puddings and sweets.

I said, in passing, something about a tub of Quality Street and DH has kicked up a fuss because 'they're rank'. They're not, he just doesn't like them.

AIBU to say that the only true Christmas sweets are either Roses or Quality Street and these new kids on the block (Heroes & Celebrations) are just pretenders to the throne??

Quality Street in this house!

DesignedForLife · 06/12/2017 20:17

YABU. Quality street is rank.

HelenaDove · 06/12/2017 20:18

Quality Street.

If it was still the 1980s/90s i would have said Roses but they are awful now.

MrsHathaway · 06/12/2017 20:18

Is it QS with the toffee penny? If so YANBat allU and should consider LT heathen B.

Heroes are good for children but they are indeed upstarts.

LoniceraJaponica · 06/12/2017 20:18

Do people get given chocolates as presents as well? If so do you really need to buy extra chocolates?

Roses are vile BTW.

MadForlt · 06/12/2017 20:19

If I was buying, I'd get something that everyone liked. Its about enjoyment rather than tradition in this house.

Personally I'd choose drumstick lollies...

JollyGiraffe · 06/12/2017 20:19

YANBU. Quality Street all the way!

Part of the fun is picking out the nice ones and avoiding the gross ones until you're left with nothing left but the toffees Grin

Howmanysleepstilchristmas · 06/12/2017 20:19

Yanbu but what about after eights???

CarrieBradshaw85 · 06/12/2017 20:19

This

shakeyourcaboose · 06/12/2017 20:20

Both QS and Roses are rank now- majority of chocolate just substandard due to all the palm oil!

MozTheMonster · 06/12/2017 20:20

Quality Street all the way (it's what my mum always got).
Roses would be 2nd choice.

AlexanderHamilton · 06/12/2017 20:20

YABU because they took all the nice ones out of Roses & Quality Street. (Like cracknell)

MrsHathaway · 06/12/2017 20:20

Do people get given chocolates as presents as well? If so do you really need to buy extra chocolates?

But ... but ... what do you eat on Christmas Eve and before? What do you share?

You don't make people share their chocolate presents?!

IfYouDontImagineNothingHappens · 06/12/2017 20:20

Yes yes Quality Street or Roses none of your heroes shit

shakeyourcaboose · 06/12/2017 20:21

Another vote for after 8s! Or matchmakers!

GingerbreadMa · 06/12/2017 20:21

Ewww no
After 8s
Toblerone
Matchmaker
Forero rocher

(and I wonder why I'm fat lol)

Puppymonkeybaby1 · 06/12/2017 20:21

It goes without saying that After Eights are part of the 'treat table' along with rum balls and Turkish delight and those sugar coated lemon and orange slices if I can find them.

SylviaTietjens · 06/12/2017 20:21

Left with nothing but toffees giraffe Shock. I’ll message you my address and we can do a swap.

Madbengalmum · 06/12/2017 20:21

Neither, a smaller box of something decent.

Puppymonkeybaby1 · 06/12/2017 20:22

I'm still devastated they took out the coffee roses.

OhNoOhNo · 06/12/2017 20:23

Ugh no.

Waitrose had a half price sale on choccies and I got Ferrero Rocher, Raffaellos, Monty Bojangles at £2.50 each.

I avoided the QS and Roses even though they were £2.

Puppymonkeybaby1 · 06/12/2017 20:23

Matchmakers! I didn't even think of those. Thanks

RatOnnaStick · 06/12/2017 20:24

Bendicks bitter mints
After Eights
Lindor balls
Toblerone

Nothing else is necessary.

Muddlingalongalone · 06/12/2017 20:25

M&S version of the tins for me these days - roses are not as nice as they used to be and I don't buy nestle.
I do love quality street though so am always pleased when someone brings them in at work!

HelenaDove · 06/12/2017 20:25

Puppy in my town both Iceland and B&M are stocking Whitakers Coffee Creams for a £1 a box DH hoovers them up.
