Help me settle an argument re: Christmas chocolates

We're going to my parents for Christmas and splitting the food shop between us (4 people plus baby) I've been tasked with getting puddings and sweets.

I said, in passing, something about a tub of Quality Street and DH has kicked up a fuss because 'they're rank'. They're not, he just doesn't like them.

AIBU to say that the only true Christmas sweets are either Roses or Quality Street and these new kids on the block (Heroes & Celebrations) are just pretenders to the throne??

QS are Nestle so I won’t have them in the house. Montesumas are the way to go.

TheSpottedZebra · 06/12/2017 20:51

Tubs of chocolates?
Ooh, it's like 1987.

Jaffalong · 06/12/2017 20:52

MumW
'Chocolate hasn't been the same since the Americans interfered with Cadbury's.'

That sounds like a political statement! 😁😱 we'll have the FBI trawling over mumsnet next for more inflammatory statements!

InvisibleKittenAttack · 06/12/2017 20:54

Quality Street is tradition. The purple ones are all mine...

You can get those sugary lemon and orange slices in Tescos.

And then after eights (although Divine do a good version that's fair traded), and something that's not fancy now but was in the 90s, like Forrero Rocher or those Lindt balls.

DancingHouse · 06/12/2017 20:54

I'm still getting over the devestation after Mingles were discontinued in 2011.

Howmanysleepstilchristmas · 06/12/2017 20:56

THe coffee roses are back. They’re green.

greendale17 · 06/12/2017 20:56

Quality Street is rank. People don’t even bring them into the office anymore.

We always get expensive chocolates at Christmas to treat ourselves

OhNoOhNo · 06/12/2017 20:57

Formalyknownas99

Meh, the government allows certain amount of insects and rodent hair per 100g of chocolate.

buckeejit · 06/12/2017 20:58

Quality St here gets my vote!

Tubbybells · 06/12/2017 21:01

Dam you - forgot about mingles. Love toffifee n m&s brandy cherries

BuggerOffAndGoodDayToYou · 06/12/2017 21:01

Bendicks bitter mints
After Eights
Lindor balls
Celebrations

That's what will be on our treat table.

weegiemum · 06/12/2017 21:03

Heroes here.

QS and After 8 are Nestle so no go in the weegie household.

LineysRunner · 06/12/2017 21:04

Asda orange thins have bitten the dust too, it seems. I really liked them, and only a quid.

LollaLaLuna · 06/12/2017 21:07

What about Thorntons chocolate?

useyourimagination · 06/12/2017 21:10

Am I the only person who remembers the sugared almonds and cherry brandy liqueur chocolates scattered in bowls round the house?

honeyrider · 06/12/2017 21:11

Quality Street are rank, the worst of all the tubs of chocolates.

Merryhobnobs · 06/12/2017 21:12

Don't care about any of those. Has to be after eights

StarWarsFanatic · 06/12/2017 21:13

Quality Street have a couple of okay ones but I wouldn't buy them. I much prefer Celebrations and Heroes. Turkish Delight are vile.

HuskyMcClusky · 06/12/2017 21:13

Also, the Ferraro fans obviously haven’t seen the video regarding the ‘worms’...

Worms? Ferrero?? What are you telling me? Shock

(No, I’m not googling)

HuskyMcClusky · 06/12/2017 21:15

Celebrations are disgusting, as are Roses.

Chocolatear · 06/12/2017 21:16

After eights post meal then a tub of Celebrations for passing round later.

katymac · 06/12/2017 21:16

We used to have 'property' chocolate

1767
Anton berg (thins and great round alcoholic marzipan things)

My mum was a chocolate buyer for a big sweet shop

We had thos bloody seashells and flakes truffles when we were the only stockist outside london

My mum found a tin of Chocolate Oliver this year and early died of excitement!

Also had QS & R and black magic! And after eights of course

haba · 06/12/2017 21:17

Nestle don't get bought in my house (even DH has to forego after eights and kitkats).
All those type of chocolates taste nasty now, and have soya and palm oil in.
I have heard the Sainsbury's ones recommended on here, but haven't looked at the ingredients. Thornton's are vile now too.
Lindor are too big for our mouths! Blush and yes, v sickly.
Matchmakers were such a treat in the seventies.

haba · 06/12/2017 21:19

Droste pastilles were always v nice too. Came in different flavours, but I haven't seen them for years.

jaseyraex · 06/12/2017 21:19

I do love a purple quality street! However celebrations win for me. Although still devastated they got rid of the galaxy truffle! Could have ate a box of them on their own.
