Help me settle an argument re: Christmas chocolates

We're going to my parents for Christmas and splitting the food shop between us (4 people plus baby) I've been tasked with getting puddings and sweets.

I said, in passing, something about a tub of Quality Street and DH has kicked up a fuss because 'they're rank'. They're not, he just doesn't like them.

AIBU to say that the only true Christmas sweets are either Roses or Quality Street and these new kids on the block (Heroes & Celebrations) are just pretenders to the throne??

Umm, just to be pedantic Milka isn’t a ‘quality German brand’, it’s made by mondelez you know the people who fucked up cadburys Angry

*previously kraft

SingingSeuss · 06/12/2017 22:05

Sorry I massively dislike all of them. I'd rather spend the money on a small box of Lindor.

ZigZagandDustin · 06/12/2017 22:05

Quality street, roses, heros and celebrations. All rank and I'd have them well hidden if we had any. So depressing to eat and inevitably you eat them.

StilettosAreANoNo · 06/12/2017 22:06

Sainsbury’s do a nice own brand tin of sweets.

TorNayDoh · 06/12/2017 22:13

@SchadenfreudePersonified It was Felicity Loudon and she launched The Secret Chocolate Company Ltd but I don't think it's actively trading.

I don't think they do tubs, but Kernow chocolate is delicious. It's hand made in Cornwall and they support ethical cocoa growing. Also their packaging is all recyclable, none of those nasty plastic packets that Roses seem to come in.

MrsHathaway · 06/12/2017 22:31

I don't know about Roses (except that they're all now identical which foxes the colour-blind) but Quality Street "plastic" wrappers are cornstarch and therefore edible which may be my party trick. Don't eat the foil.

JaceLancs · 06/12/2017 22:34

I think they’ve all gone down hill
We buy matchmakers
Lindt
Maltesers
After eight
Thornton’s Viennese truffles
Hotel chocolat
I’m also very fond of marzipan and liquorice all sorts

LoniceraJaponica · 06/12/2017 22:38

"But ... but ... what do you eat on Christmas Eve and before?"

We don't. We aren't big chocolate eaters in our house anyway.

"You don't make people share their chocolate presents?!"

There are only three of us and we don't make each other share. We just tend to share our goodies anyway. I will buy OH some Stilton for example, but we will all have some. Obviously he gets first dibs and eats more than we do, but it isn't exclusively his.

BinkyBuntyFintyCunty · 06/12/2017 22:41

At the tail end of Xmas (1980s) when there were only disgusting orange & strawberry creams left in the Roses tin, my sister and I used to sit on each other and force feed them into the other's mouth. Happy days...

Tigger001 · 06/12/2017 23:03

Ferrero Rocher all the way for Christmas in our house ..but yes I agree you also need a box of QS. I also agree roses are not as nice anymore.

Maelstrop · 06/12/2017 23:05

Wouldn't touch Quality Street or Roses, they're both crap, Imo. Heroes/Celebrations all the way.

TractorTedTed · 06/12/2017 23:05

It's not the same without a proper tin either. I'm not a fan of these new-fangled tubs.

LoniceraJaponica · 06/12/2017 23:18

If I want to indulge in sweets over Christmas I would far rather have Liquorice Allsorts and jelly babies.
My chocolate of choice would be the dark chocolate Belgian chocolate truffles from M and S.

RunRabbitRunRabbit · 06/12/2017 23:20

Those praline shell shaped chocolates are my MIL's favourite.

HelenaDove · 07/12/2017 00:30

I remember Neopolitans and Biarritz.

KellyBarclay · 07/12/2017 02:44

Sorry but I would go NC if you brought Quality Street into my home.

Nightshirt · 07/12/2017 02:53

@jaffalong, I noticed after Christmas last year the Hotel Chocolat sales are not as good as before. Much less available and small reductions. I am wondering if it is because they have now opened outlet shops and so shift surplus stock there?

Nightshirt · 07/12/2017 02:58

@Marmite27, yes, and pretty sure Milka was a Swiss company originally. It tastes crap now. Aldi's chocolate better than milka. My favourite German chocolate you can rarely get in the UK also tastes bad now. Gutted.

EmmaGrundyForPM · 07/12/2017 03:08

Quality Street are made by Nestlé so are banned from our house.

We really like Lindt Dor, so usually have loads of those. Also Hotel Chocolate but they are very expensive. I do go past the HC factory shop at least once a week and sometimes buy from.there. They've got a good deal on Halloween themed chocolate at the moment!

CiderwithBuda · 07/12/2017 03:51

I bought QS a couple of years ago and they were yuck. Sticking to Celebrations here.

And Ferrero Rocher.

I love those Anton Berg marzipan ones too.

mychildrenarebarmy · 07/12/2017 04:16

Dancinghouse and anyone else who mourns the loss of Mingles (best chocolates ever!) - try the new mint Lindors. They definitely have a hint Mingles about them.
