Help me settle an argument re: Christmas chocolates

We're going to my parents for Christmas and splitting the food shop between us (4 people plus baby) I've been tasked with getting puddings and sweets.

I said, in passing, something about a tub of Quality Street and DH has kicked up a fuss because 'they're rank'. They're not, he just doesn't like them.

AIBU to say that the only true Christmas sweets are either Roses or Quality Street and these new kids on the block (Heroes & Celebrations) are just pretenders to the throne??

They are all rubbish now, sadly, and the pathetic Quality Street tin is a poor substitute for Christmases past. We just go straight for the high quality German chocolate now, especially Milka. Mmmmmm.

Idbemonica1 · 06/12/2017 20:26

Still buy Quality Street every Xmas even though they are pretty awful, definitely look the most Christmassy though. Still prefer the taste of Roses although they aren't what they used to be.

TittyGolightly · 06/12/2017 20:26

QS = Nestle = needlessly dead babies.

They should leave. Butter taste in the mouth.

HuskyMcClusky · 06/12/2017 20:26

Anything Cadbury or Nestle is rank.

Ferrero or Lindt only.

4forksake · 06/12/2017 20:27

I'm with your DH, QS (& Roses for that matter) are rank. If I could I'd mix up the new kids on the block I like & have a box of Celebroes Grin

YABU because they took all the nice ones out of Roses & Quality Street. (Like cracknell)
^
THIS...I thought I was the only one that remembered the cracknell Smile

MiddlingMum · 06/12/2017 20:30

Full of palm oil, so contributing to the destruction of the rain forest and thereby orangutans etc.

Made by Nestle so supporting their marketing of infant formula to mothers without adequate access to clean water and sterilising facilities. www.babymilkaction.org/nestlefree

Banned in our house for the above reasons, but each to their own Smile

Idbemonica1 · 06/12/2017 20:33

Phew. Just checked my Roses tin - still has a coffee flavour one Puppy.

RestingGrinchFace · 06/12/2017 20:35

Does quality street even count as chocolate? I'm with your husband on this one. If we pulled out a box(?) of quality street it would be laughed off as a mean joke. as a general rule if sonething has more sugar than cacao in it is just not ok.

Jaffalong · 06/12/2017 20:35

Aldi or Lidl chocolate in this house. The Sainsbury's or M&S tub chocolates are far better than QS & Roses.

Tip I buy the Hotel Chocolate Christmas chocolates after Christmas day when it's marked down. So I still get to enjoy posh chocs at Christmas.

HelenaDove · 06/12/2017 20:38

I cannot eat Lindor balls anymore Too sickly. The last time i had them in for Christmas was four years ago.

IsAnyoneElseMissingCheese · 06/12/2017 20:38

I love quality Street and DH loves roses.

Although I'm eating homemade Baileys truffles right now that trumps them all Wink

RestingGrinchFace · 06/12/2017 20:38

@Jaffalong you have ruined all hope on my not getting fat over Christmas but that is very genius.

uncoolnn · 06/12/2017 20:39

Quality street yes. Roses are awful Envy

tiptopteepe · 06/12/2017 20:39

LTB Quality Street all the way!!!! I would also accept Roses

MumW · 06/12/2017 20:40

Chocolate hasn't been the same since the Americans interfered with Cadbury's.

tiptopteepe · 06/12/2017 20:41

also, yes, Lindor balls taste so good for ten seconds and then on the third one you think you are actually dying. I feel Christmas is partially about going to town on chocolate and if my chocolate takes me down on the third bite I am not happy with that at all. So Lindor can do one.

Iloveacurry · 06/12/2017 20:43

Quality Street are not very nice. Either Heroes or Celebrations if we’re buying a tub. Love mint matchmakers too. Or After Eights. Or Bendicks.

TheHolidayArmadillo · 06/12/2017 20:46

My mum got a tester tub of Roses and they're shit this year. Taste weird and hardly any in the tub. Quality Street, if you must stick with a "classic".

Celebrations are hardly pretenders now though, they've been around for yonks. and are the best

noenergy · 06/12/2017 20:46

Only like the toffee in quality street but don't think it's in it anymore.

Nothing beats Ferrero Rocher

MrsKoala · 06/12/2017 20:47

I've never ever had xmas chocolates. We always had a nice dinner on xmas day and boxing day, some even more fancy cheeses and booze and that was it really.

Oh unless you count the rancid Elizabeth Shaw mint chocolates my parents bought. heave. chocolate toothpaste.

user1497997754 · 06/12/2017 20:47

Terry's chocolate orange, after eights, co-op seashells Belgian chocolate, thorntons, Lindor, and a chocolate fondue with marshmallows

Redisthemagicolour · 06/12/2017 20:48

It's not Christmas without Quality Street

chocolateworshipper · 06/12/2017 20:48

YABU

Get a tub of Heroes or Celebrations

Formalyknownas99 · 06/12/2017 20:50

Also, the Ferraro fans obviously haven’t seen the video regarding the ‘worms’...will never eat one again while there is breath in my body....bleurghhhh!
