To wonder why everything has got unicorns all over it?

Is this a metaphor for something, or a cultural reference that has passed me by?

Why can't I buy children's clothes, wrapping paper, birthday cards, christmas decorations, anything, without it having glittery unicorns all over it? My local bakery has cupcakes with horns and closed eyes with long lashes.

What does it mean??

It’s just the in thing. Last season it was foxes - before that, owls - before that, pineapples. It’ll pass.

I have no idea but I'm thinking it's something to cheer us up (forgetting that these things are though of at least 2 yrs in advance.)

If any designers, trend setters, futurologists etc are reading this then I want Badgers in 2020, Flamingos in 2021 & some Mondrian/Ancient Eygptian/Aztec designs in 2022.

I think the reason the unicorn thing has been so big is because it appeals to young girls rather than just adults and homeware.

Hahaha @traceybeakersoyeah I know a little bit about trendsetting from uni and everything is all predicted for those years but Aztec is making a come back, llamas are here to stay as are flamingos and in the next couple of years fairies, sprites and dryads and the like are massively coming back lol

Though I think we'll get an Art Deco/Cubist meets Art Nouveau thing next. (Due to the extreme chaos we're in at the moment.)

Plus the unicorn trend is a play on how unique everyone is, it also has connections to the trans community.

But how do these things become "in"?

Do marketing executives make a mass groupthink decision about it?

I get things becoming popular on the back of films, music, TV programmes or whatever.

But now things seem to just get plastered over everything, but there is no catalyst for it. Just marketing people think everyone should be obsessed with unicorns . Is there some algorithm for working out the next pointless fashion?

No there are trans forecasting companies like trend union and companies like mintel(I think it’s mintel) that forecast everything. Trend union approach high fashion trend setters and fashion editors who submit pages and trend union will produce a prediction book that people in industry will buy. So then middle fashion will copy from this. And then the lower level of design will copy from middle fashion.
