To wonder why everything has got unicorns all over it?

Is this a metaphor for something, or a cultural reference that has passed me by?

Why can't I buy children's clothes, wrapping paper, birthday cards, christmas decorations, anything, without it having glittery unicorns all over it? My local bakery has cupcakes with horns and closed eyes with long lashes.

What does it mean?? Confused

DD2 has unicorns on everything!

DD1 and I have matching unicorn slippers and I’ve bought them Unicorn onesies for their Christmas Eve pyjamas. Blush 🦄

Ttbb · 22/11/2017 21:45

i cannot think of unicorns without hearing Unicorns, aren't they extinct in the modern world?

Ttbb · 22/11/2017 21:46

Apparently not...

EvilDoctorBallerinaRoastDuck · 22/11/2017 21:47

I blame Despicable Me.

TracyBeakerSoYeah · 22/11/2017 21:48

Trendspotting/Futurology companies who look at what is happening/new things all over the world plus some prediction.
I suggested Aztec earlier due to the striking lines & strong images/use of colour which to me represents protection/strength/order in the face of chaos.
Fairies, Sprites etc make sense too as are escapist, mysterious, wishful thinking & fun. Appeals to the child in us, when everything was black & white & made sense. (Once again an antidote to chaos.
Right I'll get me coat 😊

ShirleyPhallus · 22/11/2017 21:49

I don’t care what it is as long as the “keep calm and....” has fucked off finally

Afternooncatnap · 22/11/2017 21:49

Is it in connection to my little pony making a come back.

TracyBeakerSoYeah · 22/11/2017 21:49

Boo was writing my epic before your explanation.

@passmethewineplease My Dd would love if mermaids were next! She loves them! She has wrecked many of my jumpers squeezing both of her legs down one of the sleeves whilst pretending to be a mermaid!

custarddinosaur · 22/11/2017 21:51

The unicorns are coming. Be afraid, very afraid...

Grin
lastqueenofscotland · 22/11/2017 21:51

I just ugly laughed at wolefs

EvilDoctorBallerinaRoastDuck · 22/11/2017 21:51

My DS1 has "keep calm and..." every fucking thing.

feebeemee · 22/11/2017 21:52

Unicorns are the official animal of Scotland

Strokethefurrywall · 22/11/2017 21:52

Urgh, I think of it in the same vein as mermaids, "Keep Calm and...", anything with "Prosecco o'clock" on it and anything related to drinking gin.

SpangledBoots · 22/11/2017 21:53

Apparently it's mermaids next.

It's fine for kids stuff but when pricey beauty brands are trying to sell me unicorn tears it's just ridiculous.

EvilDoctorBallerinaRoastDuck · 22/11/2017 21:53

They're not particularly Scottish. Kelpies would be more appropriate.

toomuchtooold · 22/11/2017 21:59

It's having a moment, isn't it? I've just been back in the UK and as DD2 is obsessed with unicorns, I came back laden with stuff. Asda has unicorn sugar sprinkles!

It's gone a bit unicorn here in Germany too but as with all things consumer, they just don't commit to it in the same way as in the UK Smile

lostintranslocation · 22/11/2017 22:05

You know when you're taking about something and then you see it elsewhere. I was asked about 20 minutes ago by my husband "but how do these things become 'the thing'?".

Thanks for this handy thread! I'll show him your answers :)

Vaguely related, how many years ago would you say that swifts/swallows all over every scarf/ shirt/ tattoo was? That was where our conversation started, and I said about 4-5 years ago, but thinking about all the aforementioned trends that have come since then, maybe it's longer?

OwlKiss · 22/11/2017 22:06

My DC aren't into unicorns, but I can imagine them being very enthusiastic about the wolefs Grin. Perhaps I need to be thankful for small mercies.

This Christmas it’s all cactus here. Cactus lights, cups, candles, tree decorations and actually anything that might be vaguely ‘Mexican’, avocados, llamas, chilli and even a sombrero tree decoration. Why, I do not know.

Ellisandra · 22/11/2017 22:16

I've just bought some Unicorn lip balm from Paperchase for an advent calendar. Yep - unicorns everywhere!

Aztec has been and gone again - was on clothing a couple of years ago (and decades ago).

I liked owls. I just bought an owl thing today. I care not that it is very 2009.

Slarti · 22/11/2017 22:19

Why can't I stop laughing at wolefs? Grin

tiffanysfanny · 22/11/2017 22:21

Someone has mentioned despicable me. I was going to post this as the culprit. And also my little Pony which I think as a movie out.

tiffanysfanny · 22/11/2017 22:23

I was at “my little Pony themed birthday party” recently. Definitely having a come back.
