To think the break up of Europe has begun !

Catalonia first Flanders next and the creation of the state of Northern Italy Lega Nord.

Is this the start of the collapse of integrated states within Europe.
Surely this must give encouragement for the creation of Flanders and a legal break from the Wallonian controlled state of Belgium.

Then we can envisage Florence, Milan, Turin ,Trieste, Venice, Bologna and Pisa . The Northern League splitting from Rome.

The death of the European Union is assured.

However, i find it quite hilarious how Donald Tusk , and his Teressa May like tweet that nothing has changed. This despite the EU protestations a few weeks ago that Catalonia would be kicked out of the European Union with immediate effect if independence from Spain was declared.

I think we are seeing the shoe on the other foot with regards to the European Union and its power.

Well Catalonia has indicated strongly that they want to be a member of EU. Surely if lots of little independent countries start popping up, they will need build alliances to have more power in the global trade hence EU membership being even more important.

Isn't it the EU that has regenerated some rather impoverished British regions that were totally left behind by Westminster?

How do you feel about this, mountford?

it didn’t work out ok in Yugoslavia, actually, at all. I have family that had to leave ancestral villages, never to return. I have a cousin with a rare and interesting cancer which is not so rare anymore, now that the area where he was born was bombarded with depleted uranium

and the genocide
and the destruction of the economies
and the black hole of stupid and needless violence that an entire generation was thrown into and which all countries in the former Yugoslavia are just emerging (and if you venture away from the glam Croatian islands and coast you will still see buildings which are smashed up, abandoned, riddled with bullet holes)

and some poster wants to use this as an example of a disintegration which went well?

jesus

But Catalonia declaring independence means the death of the European Union is assured, mountford. Says so ^ in the opening post.

Perhaps you should discuss it with that poster... oh.

No i think the European Union is fighting for its life and whether Catalonia joins the list of waiting countries or is given a free pass. The European Union will tumble in to its own footprint in time!

No it is not a good thing to bring instability in to Europe but the architects of the Maastricht and Lisbon treaties have a role to play in all this instability around Europe. Whether the anti Eu sentiment is 52% in the United Kingdom probably a similar % in Austria, 25% in France and Germany . It is clear their is not much love for the EU outside of the professional classes..

Well I don't know what parallel universe you're living in, but you'll find that since the daft Brexshit referendum support for the EU has actually gone up in most member countries.

If Catalunya wants to secede and still be a member of EU I think they have to think it out again. Re apply. Ten years, minimum if ever.

They will not be members under the country of Spain anymore though.

Well good luck with that.

Hubris can be devastating after the first flush.

UK, take note.

Yes, funny how all these regretful remainers are now popping up. The other week it was the brigade of Brexit dads. I can't remember the previous wave of bots but they do tend have a theme.

Actually, do'y know what, I think the break up of Yugoslavia, did go well, or as well as it possibly could. Those wars could very easily still be going on now. It's not what I would want for a country but it seems some on this thread would.

No this is untrue. Other EU countries are content with their EU membership no matter what nonsense ideology you are trying to disseminate on this thread.

Holy shy, your ignorant hot takes about Yugoslavia or any of the countries that made it up are pretty terrible

did you read the first part of my post that talked about the sheer scale of destruction of lives and the social fabric?
