Harvey Weinstein

Rumours have been circulating about this disgusting man and his sleazy casting couch for years... He has offered a half-hearted apology, but seems rather smug about the fact that his family are supporting him.

AIBU to think his wife is misguided? What sort of example is she setting to her daughter? After all, this isn't a one-off - it is a pattern of serious abuse of women over decades.

I feel like this comes as no surprise. The guy has a reputation as a bully, a loudmouth, a megalomaniac, a narcissist. Why would his behavior towards women be respectful when he is generally an arse of the highest order, enabled by everyone around, awestruck by his ability to make cash.

Getout21 · 10/10/2017 10:06

user There are some allegations of assaults & rape.

Would the non-disclosures agreements, by his victims still be valid now that all this has come out? Would they still be enforceable?

Rose McGowan is pretty vocal, but without naming him, rumour has it she was raped by him, poor girl. I hope she can talk about her experience if that is what she wants to do.

derxa · 10/10/2017 10:19

Donna Karen is reported to have spoken about this and said that women have to look at the way they dress. If this is true then I am truly shocked I don't know what she said but when I look at the actresses draped over HW at awards ceremonies I feel a bit sick. They are like bejewelled ornaments. The women have to be stick thin, beautiful and show off their bodies. The men can be as ugly as sin and only have to wear black tie. I know it's the convention for awards ceremonies but it just seems to sum it all up.

bigfatbumfreak · 10/10/2017 10:20

If in doubt blame the woman.

derxa · 10/10/2017 10:24

I don't blame the woman. In fact the very opposite. Hollywood doesn't seemed to have changed in any way over the last century.

squoosh · 10/10/2017 10:26

Driving me potty that all the headlines seem to be focusing on the actresses who didn't speak out rather than on Weinstein himself and the allegations against him . And where are the headlines bemoaning all the male stars who remained silent?

squoosh · 10/10/2017 10:27

I think most people in Hollywood would have heard rumors

I live in Scotland and I've heard the rumours. It's hardly been a well kept secret.

ThePeanutGallery · 10/10/2017 10:28

And where are the headlines bemoaning all the male stars who remained silent?

There's one in the Guardian, and they name & shame. Let me see if I can find it again.

cowgirlsareforever · 10/10/2017 10:29

The Donna Karan clip.

Shadow666 · 10/10/2017 10:37

The thing is Harvey Weinstein is hardly a unique case. There are plenty of other producers, directors and actors who also have rumours floating around about them. Why isn't the spotlight on them? The music industry is just as bad. Why is no one looking at this as a problem endemic in the industry? Why no laws to protect people?

MargaretTwatyer · 10/10/2017 10:37

Emily Thornberry was on a current affairs programme and was very victim blamey I thought. Emphasising that these were 'young women who wanted to get on in their careers' suggesting complicity.

Weinstein is a big left wing donor so unsurprising she played it down. The usual suspects who would be going crazy are keeping their heads down.

And bullshit Meryl Streep didn't know. I live in Yorkshire and I've known about it for ages so she certainly bloody did, as did her people.

Yazoop · 10/10/2017 10:39

That Donna Karan clip ShockAngry

MargaretTwatyer · 10/10/2017 10:40

Rose McGowan has called out Ben and Casey Affleck, Matt Damon and Russell Crowe. Billy Corgan has been pretty awful to her too but not sure it it's linked to this.

The thing is, when it's rape and sexual assault it's normally female stars who are very vocal about how abhorrent it is and combatting it. Until it was Harvey Weinstein. Then they shut up. Until he was sacked at least. The contrast between their previous pronouncements and this was stark.

WhatsThisNow · 10/10/2017 10:41

But they were young women who wanted to get on in their careers. Some of them thought giving a blow job to HW was a reasonable trade off for that.

Getout21 · 10/10/2017 10:41

Shadow yep & the modelling industry.

PlectrumElectrum · 10/10/2017 10:42

I can't find anything right now but have Matt Damon or Russell Crowe made a statement yet? Rose McGowan called Damon out on twitter saying he was a spineless profiteer who remains silent.

Itsanicehotel · 10/10/2017 10:44

Sounds like Clooney (for one) was prepared to overlook Weinstein being "a dog" and "hitting on women" as well as his out of control temper, because he got good films made. He virtually says in the article he knew he was bad but not how bad. That's no excuse and had Clooney been the mouthpiece for decency, morality and justice that he has become over the last decade, then perhaps he wouldn't have been prepared to overlook such abuse by someone he knew pretty well.

There seems to be some similarity with Saville in that rumours and a grim reputation have been circulating for a long time but the victims darednt speak out because of the power he wields (not to mention he paid 8 of them to remain silent) and those who knew him were prepared to keep quiet also due to his power and ability to make good, profitable box office successes.

Itsanicehotel · 10/10/2017 10:46

And Donna Karan. Jeeesus H Christ Angry.

ThePeanutGallery · 10/10/2017 10:49

Ben and Casey Affleck

Not surprised they aren't speaking out given Casey Affleck has been accused of similar.

squoosh · 10/10/2017 10:49

Thanks for the link Peanut Smile

Riversleep · 10/10/2017 10:50

Ben and Casey Affleck? Those paragons of virtue and respectful fidelity? Well I never!
