How do doctors mate?

RebeccaWithTheGoodHair · 05/10/2017 11:53

Inspired by another thread which said that doctors can't start a relationship with their patients made me wonder what happens if there is a reciprocal attraction?

Loads of people meet their partners at work so it seems a bit of a barrier for them.

Bizarrely (apparently after reading this thread!) I know 4 doctors and none of them are married to other doctors/medical professionals.
So in my very limited experience doctors just meet other people like the rest of us do - I work in Social Services and certainly wouldn't be dating a client!

RuncibleSp00n · 05/10/2017 20:32

This thread is bizarre.

How do bin-men meet people who aren’t bin-owners? How do teachers meet spouses who aren’t parents of their students? How do MP’s meet partners who aren’t their constituents?

Totally bizarre, banal question which makes no sense whatsoever Hmm

[fwiw: I’m a HCP and am married to a teacher. We met and ‘mated’ in the usual way, ie: through mutual mates. HTH]

RuncibleSp00n · 05/10/2017 20:35

Also, I know many, many doctors of all specialisms (GPs, paediatricians, psychiatrists, junior docs, consultants etc) and NOT A SINGLE ONE of them is married to other doctors!

DryHeave · 05/10/2017 20:47

All the doctors I know are married to people they met while at university.

I'm a layperson married to a doctor. Most of our couple friends are doctor-layperson rather than doctor-doctor. We all ageee it helps cut down on the medical chat outside of work.

WrittenandGrown · 05/10/2017 21:26

Loving this thread, hilarious. I am married to a doctor and I am a HCP. We met at work.

Sallygroves · 05/10/2017 21:54

I think they just can't have arelationship with their patients

SvartePetter · 05/10/2017 21:56

My dad's cousin is a gynecologist. So is her husband. Always made me wonder.

Skyllo30 · 05/10/2017 22:07

Yes to there being lots of male doctors on Tinder. They also all mention their job in their bio. Hmm Makes them easy to avoid if you want to!

Didactylos · 05/10/2017 23:33

all the female doctors I know who post on tinder apparently never say they are a doctor on the site
while many of the males claiming to be doctors on tinder are probably not medically qualified

go figure

TitsalinaBumSqoosh · 06/10/2017 00:07

All the Drs I know (paramedics) are married to police officers or firefighters.

Topher2488 · 06/10/2017 00:24

If there is a genuine connection and they both want to make a go of it, can't the patient just stop seeing that doctor (in a professional capacity) and register with another doctor, then there is no ethical or conflict of interest issues for the doctor?

ReasonableLlama · 06/10/2017 00:53

I doubt I would want to date my doctor who's seen my vagina. And vice versa.

Sallygroves · 06/10/2017 01:00

Topher2488 yes that is true. If the patient is no longer a patient at that surgery they are both free to date.

Heychickadee · 06/10/2017 01:07

I’m a AHCP and I met my partner (doctor) at work... I was his assistant for a run of night shifts and he asked me out after 😆

It’s about 50:50 in the hospital I work at with doctors married to other doctors/married to non-medical people. Some with teachers, engineers, etc.

CherryChasingDotMuncher · 06/10/2017 01:11

Reasonable does your doctor know you’ve been looking at her vagina Wink

Coconutspongexo · 06/10/2017 06:56

It's not really acceptable to date a former patient if you treated them for like depression etc where they can be deemed vulnerable you have to use your best judgement.

ASqueakingInTheShrubbery · 06/10/2017 07:03

My stepdad was a doctor, now retired. He was at the practice we used, but wasn't "our" doctor; back then, we normally saw the same one each time. They met socially in a completely separate context. Mum and I changed GP practices when they started dating.

pollymere · 06/10/2017 17:51

You can suggest they have a different Dr. My friend who's a nurse always did this with close friends so they didn't feel uncomfortable.

Highelf · 06/10/2017 17:51

One thing for sure, I wouldnt want to date a fella with full access to my medical records

Waddlelikeapenguin · 06/10/2017 17:55

My grandmother went to see the new young doctor as she had a boil in her nose.... reader that doctor is my grandfather Grin

Mallorie · 06/10/2017 18:00

My best friend's a GP, she met her fella on Tinder. They've been together 3 years now.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 06/10/2017 18:06

Doctors do it diagnostically.
Doctors do it while you turn your head and cough.
Doctors do it with injection.
Doctors do it with patience.
Doctors do it with pills.
Doctors take two aspirin and do it in the morning.

RideOn · 06/10/2017 18:08

*50% marry someone in their year in medical school

*was told this statistic but have no evidence whatsoever to back it up!

Also male Drs often marry /partner with PAMs (professions allied to medicine) I know it is a generalization but also it is true.

If you fancy a patient you have to

  1. not act on it
  2. transfer their care if you are treating them different because of it

If they did transfer their care it still wouldn't look very good, hopefully without sounding full of myself, Drs have status due to work position and patients can be vulnerable/slightly in awe, so I imagine it would be strange for it to start on an "equal footing" in the same way as if the Dr bumped into the same person in a bar.

ahhhhhwoof · 06/10/2017 18:10

My husband is a surgeon and we met at uni - most other doctors in we know socially are married to other health professionals. I work in healthcare but not as a doctor or nurse

Wassock · 06/10/2017 18:13

After a particularly gruelling gynaecologist appointment one Friday some years back, I was out that evening at a charity ball...sat down at my allotted seat and turned to greet my 'neighbour' and was mortified to be faced with the man who had, not 3 hours earlier, had his hands in my most intimate place 😳 He very gracefully covered my blushes by filling up my wine glass and nothing was said! (Misses point of thread entirely!!)
