To wonder if no knickers with tights is a thing?

So we have had a house guest and somehow in general conversation the topic of tights came up. She said "well of course when I wear those tights with a white gusset thing I don't bother with knickers". "Sorry, what?", I replied with a bit of a Hmm on. "Oh yeah that's why they have the white bit!"she explained with a knowing look.

Really? How have I spent 37 years not knowing this? Does everyone know and do this?

eww no. EWWWW. they are all polyester and completely non absorbent..

Believeitornot · 18/09/2017 09:01

Not it is not a thing and no.

Just no.

Alisvolatpropiis · 18/09/2017 09:02

Er no, you are meant to wear knickers with tights

NicolasFlamel · 18/09/2017 09:02

Oh god I couldn't! What if they split?! Cold bits! I thought it was just sort of there as extra reinforcement Grin

ASDismynormality · 18/09/2017 09:03

I always wear knickers with tights!

Flomper · 18/09/2017 09:04

that sounds like a thing guaranteed to give you thrush and a very sore vag

RonSwansonsMoustache · 18/09/2017 09:05

Sounds painful! And YY what happens if they rip?!

PollyPerky · 18/09/2017 09:06

Errr.no. The best way is knickers and no tights' gusset. You can buy gusset-less tights. Pretty Polly Pretty Cool.

TeddyRuxpinsSmile · 18/09/2017 09:06

I mean some of them do look like gussets but yes I thought extra support too.

She made it sound plausible! "Well these tights exist for if you don't want a panty line obviously!"

My sister said this. She said the whole point of tights was so that you don't need to wear knickers.

I didn't go NC, but it was a close-run thing for a while.

Viserion · 18/09/2017 09:11

Well, I am obviously in the minority then! I have always bought gusseted tights and skipped wearing knickers. Never been an issue, no ripping, no thrush, no cold draughts and I don't wear knickers for absorbency.

Maudlinmaud · 18/09/2017 09:15

I've always thought the gusset was for extra reinforcement so you didn't split your tights.

otterlynutty · 18/09/2017 09:17

Been known to wear 2pairs, one inner pair and one outer - helps stop saggy gusset syndrome.

I vaguely remember thinking tights = no knickers as a child, but my mum will have corrected me.

QuimReaper · 18/09/2017 09:24

I mean, it's fine if people prefer to go commando with tights, but that's definitely not the whole point of them!

AllToadsLeadToHome · 18/09/2017 09:27

I remember the tights with a cotton gusset being marketed as no need to wear knickers, it was a good few years ago and the first time I ever saw them, possibly 80's.
Unfortunately the cotton bit was rather small.

Sparklesocks · 18/09/2017 09:30

Oh dear, sounds like a recipe for a yeast infection! No I always wear pants with tights and I think most others do too!

Crumbs1 · 18/09/2017 09:31

They used to make tights with a knicker top so looked like stockings attached to knickers. Otherwise no. Too uncomfortable.

JackieMac77 · 18/09/2017 09:31

I usually wear pants with tights, but one or twice I've bought those expensive tights with the cotton gusset specifically to wear without pants under a thin or clingy dress.

AnnieAnoniMouse · 18/09/2017 09:32

I've always worn knickers underneath & never thought about it, but if they're cotton gussets I suppose she's right. Well, could have been right in my younger years. My body has changed a lot & I prefer the sturdier gusset of a proper pair of knickers these days.

NurseButtercup · 18/09/2017 09:33

Firstly eeewwww no no no no! Knickers should be worn with tights. Secondly I've only recently discovered through a completely unrelated conversation, that grown women wear knickers underneath and on top of tights...I only did this as a child. Somebody upthread mentioned this practice so it's clearly more common than I realised. But from a practical perspective, isn't that going to generate too much heat?

MovingOnUpMovingOnOut · 18/09/2017 09:37

She's is right with the ones with cotton gusset. I prefer to wear my pants too but each to their own.

The only really shocking thing on this thread is the poster who requires knickers be absorbent Shock Breathable and comfortable yes. Absorbent? Confused

Iris65 · 18/09/2017 09:42

Me too. Unless you are wearing Thinx absorbency is not something I look for in knickers!

Arealhumanbeing · 18/09/2017 09:44

All of my tights have a cotton gusset and I wear them without knickers.

52FestiveRoad · 18/09/2017 09:47

I don't wear knickers for absorbency.

Sorry to lower the tone but it depends how much discharge you get.

fabulousathome · 18/09/2017 09:48

You do get a nice smooth line without knickers (with tights only) and no need to wear a thong.

I do this occasionally when wearing a clingy dress.
