To wonder if no knickers with tights is a thing?

So we have had a house guest and somehow in general conversation the topic of tights came up. She said "well of course when I wear those tights with a white gusset thing I don't bother with knickers". "Sorry, what?", I replied with a bit of a Hmm on. "Oh yeah that's why they have the white bit!"she explained with a knowing look.

Really? How have I spent 37 years not knowing this? Does everyone know and do this?

Useless anecdote of the day. I still remember the horrified look on everyone's faces in school when our English teacher told us all that wearing gloves was once more essential than wearing knickers. We were reading little women.

Can't imagine wearing tights without pants. Surely you'd get incredibly itchy? < crosses legs>

storynanny · 18/09/2017 09:51

I have done this on occasions, support type tights with gusset under clingy dress for evening out but always put a panty liner in .

SusanTheGentle · 18/09/2017 09:52

The only time I would contemplate this is when wearing the expensive fancy ones that are clearly designed with a proper knicker bit in the top. And even then only opaques!!

EachandEveryone · 18/09/2017 09:55

Is she like me and wears them once in a blue moon? I wear them on top and out them in the wash as soon as I get in from my night out.

Liiinoo · 18/09/2017 09:56

Happily I no longer have a life style that requires the regular wearing of tights but when I did I always wore the ones with a white cotton gusset so I didn't need knickers and still prefer that on the rare occasions I need to wear tights. I have never (yet) had thrush or any sort of infection. If anything I would think wearing another layer of man made fabric under or over the tights would encourage such things not prevent them.

Perhaphs think before posting about being 'shocked' when someone reveals something personal. I'm sure the poster who said they weren't absorbent enough already wishes she didn't need them to be without those comments.

Bodies change, I prefer knickers with a decent gusset that are more suited to coping with those changes. That's life.

AllToadsLeadToHome I remember those! Ghastly things, I think I tried them once - never again.

BigDamnHero · 18/09/2017 10:02

Like a PP mentioned, I actually wear two pairs of pants with tights. One as usual underneath and then a big, stretchy boxer-style pair over the top to stop the bloody tights constantly falling down.

JagerPlease · 18/09/2017 10:04

Another two pairs of pants with tights wearer here!

GoldenHoops · 18/09/2017 10:05

I remember listening in a conversation with my mum and aunties regarding this in the 70's. The outcome was that 1 of them wore knickers and tights and 2 of them wore tights then knickers over the top 🤔 may be they were superman fans!

honeyroar · 18/09/2017 10:07

I wear knickers with tights, but I don't think it's worth all the eeewing if people don't!

specialsubject · 18/09/2017 10:11

I am also really pleased that I no longer have any clothing that would need tights. Always too short and too high maintenance.

Stockings - hold ups if needed, if I ever wear a skirt again.

BarbarianMum · 18/09/2017 10:21

I'm impressed that so many of you have such strong feelings about how other people manage their underwear. Good job you're not men or that would be really creepy.

AdoraBell · 18/09/2017 10:27

I had to, once. Early twenties, living alone, working ft and not on top of laundry.

I repeat, once. It was truly grim and has never, and will never, happen again.

PollyPerky · 18/09/2017 10:32

Cotton gusset tights still have a layer of nylon on the outside

You might think you are wearing a cotton gusset but it's covered by the nylon material. The tights don't go 'round' the gusset, the cover it.

If you wear 100% cotton knickers, the gusset is all cotton.

Even knickers that are advertised as having a cotton gusset only have cotton next to your skin- they are double layer and the outer layer is the same as the knicker material.

I cut the gussets out of tights. Much cooler.

YodellingMama · 18/09/2017 10:35

The only really shocking thing on this thread is the poster who requires knickers be absorbent shock Breathable and comfortable yes. Absorbent?

Don't you get any vaginal discharge?

I get heaps.

Twistmeandturnme · 18/09/2017 10:37

If it's good enough for Vivienne Westwood.....

danTDM · 18/09/2017 10:39

I got married in Canada with a tight dress. You can buy 'one wear' tights there which you don't need to wear knickers with.

Only time I've done it though!

Ansumpasty · 18/09/2017 10:46

No! I thought that white part was just for extra breathing, so to speak.

I remember in high school, one girl would always wear her knickers over the top of her tights, so we'd see when changing for PE. Odd!

scampimom · 18/09/2017 10:47

People in the 80s used to wear tights under trousers. Double ick.

Solo · 18/09/2017 10:51

Before the days of Spanx type underwear, ('80's) if I was going out wearing a slinky number then I would sometimes wear tights with no knickers. No problems except when I was dancing and the floor was slippery and I went flying Blush at all. Rarely wear tights these days though and I'd now drag out my imitation Spanx to do the job Grin.

Oldraver · 18/09/2017 10:52

As a teen back in the late 70's/80's I wore a pair of knickers on top of my tights as well as underneath..It's what my Mum did and she impressed it on me thats what people did.

She did say when I was around 16..."oh you'll have to wear a panty girdle soon"...I was 9 stone and not a bit of belly on me.

Solo · 18/09/2017 10:56

Oldraver Yes, my Mum also 'taught' me to wear a pair of pants under and over my tights - same era too. I think she'd have had a fit if she'd know I went without drawers at times Grin

Solo · 18/09/2017 10:57

*known

gotthemoononastick · 18/09/2017 10:58

In the 60's we went commando, but wore white lacey stockings and dainty suspender belts.Hot August nights!
