To have a Avocado bathroom suite

SunshineHQ · 13/08/2017 22:47

Just that really.

Buying a new house. Limited money to spend, and a long list of what I'd like to spend it on.

AIBU to to think I can live with an avocado bathroom suite? It is all in great condition, just - well - avocado green.

Does any one have any success stories? Are there other funky colours that go with avocado? Or do I just pretend the retro look was deliberate?

Help me please, fellow Mumsnetters!

A khaki shit colour might go well..

FrLukeDuke · 13/08/2017 22:49

Leave it and wait for it to come round again and be the height of fashion.

EdmundCleverClogs · 13/08/2017 22:50

Sorry, no help but your post just reminded me of this Mitchell and Webb sketch Grin

rabaria · 13/08/2017 22:50

Lots of orange and brown towels and mats, some of those stick - on "tiles" in the same style ( Amazon) and it'll look awesome. I'd play it up to its full potential if I were you

MrsOverTheRoad · 13/08/2017 22:51

Well if the house is what you can afford and you can't afford a new bathroom then of course YANBU.

I've got brown floral tiles in mine....circa 1975!

You can't be fussy if that's what you've got. Just go full retro and add a load of amusing vintage shite.

scrabbler3 · 13/08/2017 22:51

Maybe coloured suites will make a comeback. You never know. My friend has a pink bathroom (1981 house bought at auction, never renovated) and I quite like it - reminds me of my grandmother's house back in the day. My friend can't wait to replace it though.

altiara · 13/08/2017 22:52

Advice:
Don't show anyone
Shower quickly and get out of the bathroom as soon as you can

What else are you prioritising? As a nice bathroom is amazing!!!! But not essential as long as it all works.

Thenorthbloodywellremembers · 13/08/2017 22:52

I would love an avocado suite! Mostly because in my experience the sink and bath are a really good size. Embrace the retro!

kingfishergreen · 13/08/2017 22:53

#whispers
I quite like a coloured bathroom suite. Avocado ones remind me of my childhood.

I probably wouldn't replace a pink one.

Get some bright white towels.

Leeds2 · 13/08/2017 22:54

My parents have one! They moved in in 1980.
If it were mine, I would have white accessories to try and update it a bit.

Scholes34 · 13/08/2017 22:54

Fit some nice swanky new taps!

SunshineHQ · 13/08/2017 22:54

I wondered randomly whether:

a) white 'with a touch of lilac' paint

b) mainly white tiles but with some lilac and green tiles scattered in there

c) light lilac floor tiles

d) a few well thought out accessories

I was randomly thinking of my mum's old D reg 2CV car that was coloured light yellow and navy blue, and really worked......

Could you go funky and geometric? These are floor tiles but pick up the khaki green.

SunshineHQ · 13/08/2017 22:59

The kitchen is really dated.

All our visitors will see the kitchen, and with young kids it is pretty much the main room in the house.

So I'd rather get the kitchen right.

These make me wish I could do my bathroom again - and would work with avocado green.

Cherrytart6 · 13/08/2017 23:03

I love them!!! Avocado and white maybe? Or brown

pigsDOfly · 13/08/2017 23:03

I got married in 1977, bought our house and among the work we had done on it we installed a avocado bathroom suite. Thought it was very smart at the time.

Does yours have a bidet OP? I know that sounds like an odd question but every new bathroom seemed to have a bidet in the 70s but when I was looking to buy my current house (new build) none of the bathrooms in any of the houses I looked at had one. Have they fallen out of favour?

SunshineHQ · 13/08/2017 23:04

No, it doesn't have a bidet.

Are you buying my neighbors house...it went up for sale on Rightmove a few weeks ago and I had to have a good old nose. First thing that struck me was the avacado bathroom! Retro Grin

badbadhusky · 13/08/2017 23:05

Our holiday villa this summer had a bidet. My boys loved it - apparently it was great for washing feet and bums/undercarriage.

lalalonglegs · 13/08/2017 23:06

I don't mind a coloured suite - I saw a really beautiful powder blue one a few months ago and a very funky original 1970s yellow one in a beautiful, architect-designed house a few years ago (it was for sale and I know that the new owners would have ripped it out immediately Sad). Avocado can be quite nice, I'd try cream/champagne tiles with it.

pigsDOfly · 13/08/2017 23:07

Ah okay. They were really fashionable when we did our bathroom.

scrabbler3 · 13/08/2017 23:07

My kitchen is dated. It's got little black tiles on the walls. Loads of blank and white, like the kitchen of a fancy bachelor pad circa 1988. I can't afford to replace it, so maybe I should run with the theme and put an Athena poster on the wall and a couple of Pierrot dolls on the shelf.

TartanDMs · 13/08/2017 23:09

We have a champagne bathroom suite and it isn't what I would have chosen, but at the end of the day it's just a place to wash and shit. I spent my childhood in a house with a chocolate brown bathroom though - my parents bought a nearly new build where the previous owner had bought before it was completed and requested chocolate brown fittings, then decided to sell and buy the house next door and instal the same decor, before selling that too and moving out of the area. So us and the neighbours had awful bathrooms on a new estate where everyone else had white or avocado!

Alpacaandgo · 13/08/2017 23:09

We have an avocado suite and it functions very well despite its colour! We can't afford to replace it yet but there actually nothing wrong with it. Rest of the bathroom is a cream colour.
