To have a Avocado bathroom suite

SunshineHQ · 13/08/2017 22:47

Just that really.

Buying a new house. Limited money to spend, and a long list of what I'd like to spend it on.

AIBU to to think I can live with an avocado bathroom suite? It is all in great condition, just - well - avocado green.

Does any one have any success stories? Are there other funky colours that go with avocado? Or do I just pretend the retro look was deliberate?

Help me please, fellow Mumsnetters!

You could go for the full seventies look with pot plants hanging from macrame holders all over the place, and have beige and/or cream towels.

I grew up in a fifties house with pink suite and black tiles and lots of chrome in the bathroom. It was the height of cool at the time (and I secretly still think it was cool). Cleaning the tiles was my job, though, and they were a PITA.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 15/08/2017 16:37

I would dearly love a suite that was vintage pale pink, pale blue or primrose yellow. I just think they look lovely. Blush

SunshineHQ · 15/08/2017 17:04

LyingWitch, I think that's the thing. I would love one of those other pastel colours, just not desperately keen on the dull-ish green.

LyingWitch I agree. I love them.

Agree with OP on avocado, but I'd also want to live with it until I had the spare cash to get it exactly as I wanted. Meanwhile tiles, flooring and towels would make a lot of difference.

HotelEuphoria · 15/08/2017 18:29

Don't spend any money on it at all. Just live with it, if you spend any money on decor you will feel like you have to live with it for longer and perish the thought but your friends may think you like it. It's functional so use it as it is intended whilst you save up for the dream bathroom, however long it may take. I lived with a burgundy - official colour "damask" for ten years once.

Why "chicken" tiles?

Puzzledandpissedoff · 15/08/2017 18:59

Why "chicken" tiles?

Look closely at the pattern Wink

Warning: it's a somewhat addictive pastime!!

CazY777 · 15/08/2017 19:34

Those chicken tiles take me back to my childhood, my grandparents had them. We've recently bought a house which needs a lot of work, bathroom has a dated white suite but these awful green tiles everywhere, and an artex ceiling and green carpet. Can't afford to have it done as we've just spent all our money on a new kitchen, rewire and unexpected drainage issues. I think I can live with the bathroom more than the vile carpets and wallpaper everywhere so they'll probably get done first.

We have this tiled beauty on the wall above our bath.

My downstairs loo and basin are avocado. I don't even notice it now, 20 years when we moved in I couldn't wait to change it. In the grand scheme of things it isn't that big a deal.

DustinGee · 15/08/2017 19:58

Not a bathroom, or avocado, but wanted to share this (to me) gorgeous kitchen. It's in a bungalow near me that's had one owner since it was built. I love it.

oooh get this wallpaper (it might be cheaper to get a new bathroom tho!) and hot pink towels.

TheEmmaDilemma · 15/08/2017 20:21

I miss my Mum's avacado green suite. And my DP's in his former house.

You can totally make it work and this thread has been great at making me think because we're house hunting right now and looking the type of places that might have these!

I have never created a post that did that

It's a great thread Sunshine.

Firstly it's got a lot of us older Mumsnetters thinking back to our first homes and going out and choosing our bathroom suite colours. We had a choice back then and it wasn't white.

Then as fashions and fads come and go, everything we chose went out of date and it was all about white and neutral.

Then this thread pops up and it stirs up nostalgia and personal taste and what each of us like, want, in our homes.

What warms my heart is how many on here are perfectly happy to live with a coloured bathroom suite and also embrace things that may be deemed old fashioned, or out of date, or naff.

Trust me. All of you with your pristine white bathrooms and gleaming shiny kitchens ... that will also be out of date one day.

That's just how it is is.

I live in a house with one. If I had the option I would paints the walls cream and gave gold accessories in the bathroom...then the avocado bath set might look ok-ish

OldLagNewName · 16/08/2017 09:41

A friend of mine has a lovely bathroom with an avocado suite. She's done it in shades of green and white with lots of plants and then a bit of pale pink. You really don't notice that it's an avocado suite.

badtime · 16/08/2017 10:46

I love avocado suites.

My mil still has hers from the 70s and I think every time how much nicer it is than everything being white.

I will totally get some bright colour if I ever get round to doing a bathroom.

MagicMoneyTree · 16/08/2017 11:38

We've got a 1970s house and I'm secretly a bit disappointed that it doesn't have an avocado bathroom suite. They remind me of my nan. I would definitely embrace it and go full-on retro like it's your dream bathroom. NOT with lilac paint or those hideous little coloured mosaic tiles you posted a link to though!!! I'd keep the paint cream and get cream towels. I would avoid mosaic tiles altogether - they're a bugger to keep clean - just more grout to stain/go mouldy/etc.

GreenTulips · 16/08/2017 11:41

My PIL have advacardo bathroom the bath is huge!! No bent knees!!

I'm straight in when I'm staying there (as are all the GC together)

The 70's shower isn't so nice!

morningconstitutional2017 · 16/08/2017 11:44

It's not what I'd choose but I could live with it until funds permitted. I think that if everything else is neutral it'd not be too offensive in the meantime.

littlemissneela · 16/08/2017 12:54

Our old bathroom was more the colour of the tiles in the Mitchell and Webb sketch. I loved it! I painted the walls white, but then that felt too stark and so I painted the walls on one side dark blue.
Our bathroom now is a boring white suite and I would love to replace it with a retro coloured suite, either the pale blue, yellow or the same greeny blue.
If the bathroom in the house is sound and usable, then I would go with it for now. You can always change it later on.
