AIBU?

To have a Avocado bathroom suite

Just that really.

Buying a new house. Limited money to spend, and a long list of what I'd like to spend it on.

AIBU to to think I can live with an avocado bathroom suite? It is all in great condition, just - well - avocado green.

Does any one have any success stories? Are there other funky colours that go with avocado? Or do I just pretend the retro look was deliberate?

Help me please, fellow Mumsnetters!

I had a avocado suite for a good few years as we ran out of money when we got to the bathroom when renovating the whole house!

We went with an avocado green feature wall with lots of small square mirrors with rounded corners on the green wall for a retro look and the other three walks in white . Dark Green floor tiles and white towels and white accessories. It looked great Smile

So I'd go for white and black geometric towels

i reckon it will come back into fashion anyway so embrace it! also agree with PP that the sinks and baths are always huge with coloured bathroom suites. if yours is in good condition and its not top of the list for changing and spending is limited, good on you for living with it, it will look fab with bright white towels or champagne oyster ones.

See also coloured toiled tissue - making a comeback! Grin

Ooh, I like the idea of dark green floor tiles, and plain white towels etc...

Main thing is: do you like the house/area/etc? If so, you can deal with avocado for the time being until you can do up the bathroom. Most houses will have something manky that needs doing up at great expense that will probably take a lot longer to get round to doing than you expect, like our disgusting brown shag pile carpet and the vile "changing rooms" style kitchen tiles we've inherited.

How dated is the kitchen? I've seen 70's units go for good money on retro sites

only a matter of time before aqua/turquoise bathroom suites (and avocado) come back 'in'. In the next 2 years I reckon.

We had family with a primrose yellow 1940s bathroom with matching tiles sadly the property has gone but was a beautiful room.

Avocado & grey & dusky pink would look like you meant it!

Kitchen is 80s, but with quite heavy wear and tear.

Location is just what we need (me and 2 kids post divorce). House needs quite a lot of work, and is relatively small rooms, BUT is detached (really important for Autistic DS who has loud meltdowns, but equally can be very sensitive to the slightest noise from a neighbour), and has 4th bedroom for my parents who help out a lot.

I quite like avocado baths, we had one growing up. But they are not the height of fashion any more!

I think some of the tiling ideas could work. But if you're going with something dark, make sure you have decent lighting in there. You can also get baths recoloured, though I don't know whether it would fall in your budget.

Ooh embrace it. It's probably on the cusp of coming back into fashion. Today's neutral, colourless bathrooms are so damn boring.

The orange tiles in the pic up thread would take it to the next level of awesome.

We bought our house a couple of years ago and I fell in love with the retro avocado suite (it kind of represented an old house that doesn't matter if the kids wreck it). We have had to do bits to the bathroom as things need replacing. We did replace the carpet with a charcoal grey Marmoleum which looks ok. Sadly now the bath and the toilet have to be replaced as they have holes in them. But I am keeping the sink dammit.

I think the multicolour is too busy - try to stick with just the green and white, to make it look stark and stylish, rather than just skint!

I love coloured bathroom suites! The thing that puts me off buying one is that it might make the house less attractive to sell on. If I could buy a place with one already in for a bargain then it'd be a no brainer!

Do it!! Smile

Go with it and if you need spares or fancy an equally retro colour change check out broken bog for ideas.

  1. not really any point retiling it all - it's a false economy. For not much more you could just replace the suite.

  2. avoid mosaic tiles like the plague. There is too much grout and not enough tile so they are prone to leaks.

  3. avocado is due a retro comeback any day now.

I grew up with an orchid pink suite and now live in a house with a probably late 50's suite that is a strange shade of yellow that almost edges onto green and that nothing goes with. It also has black and blue wall tiles. It's an original feature I suppose, but I have no idea what whoever choose the colour combination was thinking Confused

All still works fine though, so it's not going anywhere for the foreseeable future.

We also have the lovely dated kitchen. Ours is red and I hated it at first but it has sort of grown on me Grin
