AIBU?

To have a Avocado bathroom suite

Just that really.

Buying a new house. Limited money to spend, and a long list of what I'd like to spend it on.

AIBU to to think I can live with an avocado bathroom suite? It is all in great condition, just - well - avocado green.

Does any one have any success stories? Are there other funky colours that go with avocado? Or do I just pretend the retro look was deliberate?

Help me please, fellow Mumsnetters!

Currently our en suite is peach, complete with bidet and brass taps.

I agree you can live with it if it all works and doesn't offend you! Spend your money where it will be best appreciated first!

Oh and it has carpet, green carpet. I have better things to spend cash on so long as it works!

Are Yucca plants similarly themed?

I remember loving my 2 ft tall yucca that came with me to university, and managed to survive 4 years of complete neglect.

Our ensuite was Champagne with gold taps we lived with it for ages then changed it last year. The sink was huge as was the toilet, we now have white and better sized for the room.
I've live with it if it's been well maintained and change it in a few years when you can afford it. By then you and your Dh could learn to plumb and do it all yourself cheaper that hiring a plumber.

I LOVE coloured bathrooms suites too. I'd like a yellow one.

With an avocado suite I'd embrace the botanical thing too and do deep greys, whites, mossy colours and gold. Gorgeous! Definitely need a spider plant.

I reckon they're due a comeback quite soon.

The house we're about to move to has a white suite with white metro tiles. It's boring and slightly oppressive at the same time. I'm (genuinely) on the lookout for a turquoise or jade green suite to replace it with...

I have two 70s bathroom suites, one is grey and the other is sky blue. I wasn't sure at first, but over the last year I've come to love them Blush

Lived in this house 15 years and only now gotten rid of the avocado suite! Yay! The tangerine one in the main bathroom was more of a priority - and the not matching green carpet in same bathroom.

Took all my time and money to get rid of the fake beams and artex...

I reckon (purely on economic grounds, not aesthetic ones) that coloured bathroom suites are due a comeback. Surely by now 99.9% of the coloured baths in the country must have been replaced so if DIY stores/bathroom fitters want a continued livelihood, they've got to persuade us that avocado is fashionable again.

Our first house had an avocado bathroom. We ended up replacing it about 6 months before we moved out to help the house sell. It was definitely dated, but the enameled bathtub was of much higher quality than the plastic one that replaced it and deeper too. The 70s tiles were still in mint condition - bombproof, even.

I'm tempted to leave mine as long as possible in the hopes of either a) it coming back into fashion and thereby deeming me "fashion forward" for the first time ever or b) mine being the last remaining operational coloured bathroom suite.

Reckon I could get it listed if I left it long enough? Plus I wouldn't have to clean it much since that's what you do with antiques, right?!

God help me, I'm old enough to remember this the first time round!! Blush

However if you really want to embrace the retro aesthetic, what you need is some chicken tiles to go with it ...

Avocado bathroom suites are lovely,, although I don't personally have one, but know a few people who have them. The are a few firms on the net where you can still buy them.. In the 1970 era I had a Harvest gold suite which I loved, but nobody else did. I now live in a very old house and have a crappy old white bathroom suite.

Pale pink walls is the way to go. And palm print towels.

Have a look on Pinterest or Instagram for inspiration?

You can pick up a basic white suite for next to nothing, particularly if you scour B&Q etc for clearance bits.

My parents have an absolutely vile pink bathroom (from 1978). It definitely fits the phrase "in need of updating" that estate agents use. But I'm thinking that it'd look a lot less nasty if the entire room wasn't in a matching shade - pink walls, pink tiles, pink curtains, pink lampshade, pink loo roll, pink everything except the carpet (dodgy shade of brown).

I actually think that if coloured suites came back into fashion then I might consider buying one - as long as it wasn't a legal requirement to cover the entire bathroom in the same virtually fluorescent colour.

I'd go for your avocado bathroom, OP (I too immediately thought of the Mitchell & Webb sketch). Nice towels, maybe re-paint if you can, make it look as new and 'fresh' as possible. Spider plant is an obvious essential!
