AIBU?

To have a Avocado bathroom suite

Just that really.

Buying a new house. Limited money to spend, and a long list of what I'd like to spend it on.

AIBU to to think I can live with an avocado bathroom suite? It is all in great condition, just - well - avocado green.

Does any one have any success stories? Are there other funky colours that go with avocado? Or do I just pretend the retro look was deliberate?

Help me please, fellow Mumsnetters!

Ha ha, we moved here a year ago, and though obviously I knew the bathroom suite was green, I'd completely not connected it to the old 'avocado' suites, which it blatantly is - you have made my night Grin. I don't mind it, it goes pretty well with the varnished wood cladding up the wall Wink

My aunt has an avocado bathroom suite along with 70s tiles a bit like this.

But instead of tiled floor, it's a green carpet! That would be full on embracing it. Also, paint some rugby balls dark brown and hang from the ceiling to be the pips.

Dh and I rented a house in France. It had a pink bathroom with hexagonal matching mosaic tiles. The downstairs loo was dark mulberry with a lilac sink and loo seat. The downstairs bedroom had an ensuite bathroom with a glittery brown/gold round bath with glittery sinks and all gold taps. In place of the loo, there was a bidet (just why??). All marble tiled. I loooooved that house

I'd try to keep the same colour tiles and do the white towels. If your wall tiles are avocado and white, you could just have plain white floor tiles.

When you do get round to selling them, you may decide to eBay them if they are in good condition.

I actively WANT a 70s style bathroom. DP believes white is the only colour that goes in the bathroom. I don't understand why as it highlights stains so easily :/

When are coloured suites returning to fashion?

I moved house four months ago and have an avocado suite including bidet (although I've put an ikea coffee table over the bidet as I don't like it staring at me when I'm on the loo) The suite is really solid and well made and I'm reluctant to refit the bathroom with something inferior. We also have green walls, green tiles and green carpet. It's my favourite room in the house!

Agree that the cost of retiling would be a huge proportion of a new bathroom. You can get bathroom suites for not much money.

Either do it all or just repaint and put cheap lino down.

Keep it and make it quirky! I love retro bathrooms and I would love a pink or blue one from broken bog!
When my mum & dad bought a new house in the 1980's they could chose the colour of the fittings, there's a champagne wc downstairs & whisper grey suite - I wanted peach, it was the height of sophistication at that time!
Another family member recently had an old burgandy suite in a rented house- not as keen on that one, but a really solid suite.

I think just keep it as is and put down some lino for now, and paint if needs be.

Don't bother spending money on timing or anything until you come to do the bathroom properly.

I love coloured bathroom suites! It's time they made a comeback.

I inherited a gruesome pink suite here with gold taps and pink and gold tiles. It cost me only about £2500 to rip it all out and replace. I bought a very cheap but good bathroom suite and taps from Plumbworld, sourced some end of range tiles and for that money had even included a whirlpool shower bath.

I saw a house improvement programme where they put together a bathroom from yellow sink,, green bath, pink loo etc. Looked great. It'll all be back in soon. Try the lilac...

We had an avocado suite in our house when we moved in, and a sand coloured suite in the en suite, both with bidets! Since been replaced, but in am sure it won't be long before coloured suites are in fashion again when everyone is bored of white.

I've wondered when coloured suites will come back in fashion, whites been around for ages. I say leave it, you don't have the money and who knows as pp said in 10 years you could be back in. (I always fancied a turquiose bathroom myself :) )

Ours is a pale minty green. Bought new house and cant be bothered changing a perfectly functioning bathroom. See also our 1970's kitchen. I'm buying retro stuff to go with it.

My nan had a blue one. She always wanted to change it to a white but my grandad was against it as he said it was well made and not worth changing. When he died one of the first things she did was get the bathroom done and now complains how it isn't as well made as the blue one.

There's nothing intrinsically wrong with any colour, as long as the fittings are reasonable design and quality and in good condition.

Our down stairs loo is mustard yellow we painted the walls white and got some yellow accessories... it's improved it a bit hee hee and I've lived with it for 4 years but it's on the list to be done!! if you love the house it's well worth living with things... it'll be worth it in the end Grin

I kept mine as it was of a quality I can't afford and the bath is really comfortable with a shaped backrest. Cream tiling, white/greenish vinyl flooring, cream and white paint, clear shower screen - nothing but compliments, looks stylish and contemporary (other people's description).
Unless you want the full on retro look, avoid any other 70s references.

We viewed a house once which was completely unsuitable, but it had the most magnificent bathroom suite. Chocolate brown with gold accessories. I wanted to buy it based on that alone. The agent kept saying how it would need ripping out and i was thinking no way THIS is the reason i'd buy it!

I've always fancied an orange suite with black and orange floral wallpaper. We had midnight blue growing up then avocado. I think the trend for white it really dull.

There was one grand designs where they did a reclaimed deco bathroom and all the bits were different colours from salvage yards - it was gorgeous.

Don't try to hide it. If you do go for it it then really play it up.

Leave it in!!! Worst thing I ever did was rip out the solid 1960s bathroom suite in my house. Had 2 new toilets in 3 years due to crappy modern parts breaking and leaking. Original suite was in perfect condition and working just as perfectly as in 1963 when my house was built 😫

When we moved our new house had an aquamarine suite. It was tiled with a mix of plain aqua tiles interspersed with tiles with pictures of different galleons (pirate ships) on them. It was awful but impressive in equal measure.

It was three or four years until we got round to replacing it all. We just rocked the pirate look by adding a fake parrot, chest of treasure and sea-shell loo seat Blush

I like avocado bathrooms, but then my parents had one when I was little and they're nostalgic to me. :) I think with the right decoration they can look fab.

My parents have still got their original champagne bathroom suite from the 80's and it's lasted brilliantly, probably better than my brand new white one.
