Anybody else on holiday with a miserable bastard husband?

Nettletheelf · 07/08/2017 21:33

I seem to have found myself on holiday with Victor Meldrew. Tell me that I'm not the only one.

On a hot Mediterranean island suggested by DH. We return to the UK tomorrow, after a week's holiday. Just him and me: DSD and DSS are too old to go on holiday with us.

I'm 45, he's 52. Both very fit and healthy. Happily married, except on this holiday, when I have been tempted to murder him!

His complaints during the week have included the following:

  1. Too hot. We're in the fecking mediterranean in August. Of course it's sodding hot.

1a. Too hot to sleep well, thus making him "a bit grumpy".

  1. Beach too sandy (I HAVE NOT MADE THIS UP). Sand too fine and gets stuck to things, causing dismay.
  1. Beach, specifically sand, too hot to walk on.
  1. Has been "too full" to properly enjoy dinners at range of lovely restaurants.
  1. Claimed to be 'delirious with the heat' today after leaving air conditioned coach for two hours in historic town.
  1. We went on an organised long walk through an area of outstanding natural beauty, just up his street, I thought. He was disappointed in it. The gorge was "too stony".
  1. Following gorge walk, his legs were "a bit sore" when descending stairs.
  1. Foreign chocolate not up to UK standards.
  1. World heritage site "a bit boring" and "just a load of stones".
  1. Doesn't like "being told things by people" i.e. tour guide with expert knowledge of ruins.

Etc etc. I'll spare you the rest.

Is this inevitable? Do they all turn into whinging bastards? We know loads of them, and I always thought DH compared well. He doesn't!

It's enough to put me off going on holiday with him again.

Do I need to put LIGHT HEARTED, LIGHT HEARTED to prevent people telling me that my marriage is over and I should leave him? I have, just in case.

Tell me that I'm not the only one!!

You could try separate holidays?
Im sure the woman who does relationship advice on the daily mail website has written that this is a good thing in the past.

BankWadger · 08/08/2017 15:01

This is my first holiday since splitting with STBXH. Fucking loving it 😁

Bemusedandpuzzled · 08/08/2017 15:05

Are you on Crete? misses point

Some people get really grumpy in heat - have you seen him this hot before?

Madbengalmum · 08/08/2017 15:09

OP why is your OH holidaying in the kids holidays at the hottest time of year if he doesnt like heat and your kids are too old for going on hoilday with you? Surely a less busy, cooler and cheaper time of year would be more appropriate?

MartinJD could you please go troll somewhere else? You are only on MN so that someone can stick up for the "poor guys".

user1497357411 · 08/08/2017 15:29

Spar is an international supermarket chain, which originates in the Netherlands. The name was originally DE SPAR – which is an acronym[ made of the dutch sentence: "Door Eendrachtig Samenwerken Profiteren Allen Regelmatig" Which means "Through cooperation all will benefit on a regular basis", so it is a co-op. Any other questions?

CockacidalManiac · 08/08/2017 15:37

It could be worse. You could be on holiday with Martin; I'm picturing him as Simon Day's irritating bloke in the pub from the Fast Show.

MartinJD · 08/08/2017 15:46

I'm not really au fait with SPAR as we usually shop in Waitrose. Do they sell fresh food or is it mostly canned meats, frozen pizza etc?

Best,
M.JD

Feeling your pain obvs OP but this is the most brilliant thread I've read in months. You should post Instagram stories so we can all see what's happening as well as hearing about it. A blog would be excellent too. If you're not already a writer you should give it serious consideration. Hope your holiday improves from here.

Oh god. He'd be one of those men with really white legs with socks pulled up as far as possible, and a shapeless khaki hat bought in 1982. Conversations would be one-sided, consisting of quoting from the guide book, bleating about how you shouldn't tip the waiter too much, and doing endless calculations to compare the price of goods and services in holiday country vs home.

Separate holidays. Went on holiday twice with the ex and dc's. He was a miserable whiny bastard the whole time. Didn't want to do a thing aside from sit inside and watch shite tv. Didn't want to eat out.
Moaned about the cost of everything. D.C.'s and I went out all the time and had loads of fun, even paddling in the sea in the rain.

He never wanted to sort his passport out. We wanted to travel to other places. Went several times and left him at home. More complaints but he had a choice.

AngelaTwerkel · 08/08/2017 16:01

... and uses phrases like "au fait" and "c'est la vie" without any irony!

Iwanttobe8stoneagain · 08/08/2017 16:31

Are you in Cyprus by any chance? It's bloody hot there at the mo. Luckily we all love the heat! Next year send him to siberia

flownthecoopkiwi · 08/08/2017 16:36

Our italian beach is made of rocks and apparently too rocky and the water too deep for the toddler. Great excuse to go off with DD and leave DH with toddler.

coffeekittens · 08/08/2017 16:48

Completely off topic but if M.JD behaved like their internet persona offline and I happen to know them in person I'd shove a wedge of loo roll into his/her mouth.

The least entertaining troll ever.

specialsubject · 08/08/2017 16:51

Guessing Crete which was always going to be hot in august.

But as an ex-rep, your husband isnt the only one to be surprised that abroad is a bit different. Fortunately we only had to put up with this for two weeks at most!

celticmissey · 08/08/2017 16:52

Yep been... you are definitely not alone. I was there only just recently! with a late 40's OH who morphed into Meldrew early on in the week ending with a toddlers tantrum over a parking machine not working properly! told him to shove it and I walked off and had a couple of hours to myself - nice and peaceful...pity you can't book them into holiday clubs like the kids to give you a nice break! hate to say it but at one point I did think I would rather be back home.....

FuckYouLinda · 08/08/2017 17:06

DP and I love the same things on holiday so we are lucky in that way. I went on holiday with another family member once though and never again. I wouldn't mind if she moaned. She point blank refused to do a single thing that didn't suit her. It was her way or the highway. I will throw myself out of the plane on the way over if I ever find myself going on holiday with her again.

MrMessy · 08/08/2017 17:11

Waitrose? Oh Martin, the Spar I went to on holiday had its own bakery and delicatessen, you could buy any manner of fresh food there. It made Waitrose seem like Farm Foods.

Cheers

MVM

AnneElliott · 08/08/2017 17:19

I have a DH like that too. Hates the heat and the beach, but doesn't want to stay home!

zukiecat · 08/08/2017 17:50

The80sweregreat · 08/08/2017 17:54

Martin, try to get a job in waitrose. Then you wont have time to come on here.
