Anybody else on holiday with a miserable bastard husband?

Nettletheelf · 07/08/2017 21:33

I seem to have found myself on holiday with Victor Meldrew. Tell me that I'm not the only one.

On a hot Mediterranean island suggested by DH. We return to the UK tomorrow, after a week's holiday. Just him and me: DSD and DSS are too old to go on holiday with us.

I'm 45, he's 52. Both very fit and healthy. Happily married, except on this holiday, when I have been tempted to murder him!

His complaints during the week have included the following:

  1. Too hot. We're in the fecking mediterranean in August. Of course it's sodding hot.

1a. Too hot to sleep well, thus making him "a bit grumpy".

  1. Beach too sandy (I HAVE NOT MADE THIS UP). Sand too fine and gets stuck to things, causing dismay.
  1. Beach, specifically sand, too hot to walk on.
  1. Has been "too full" to properly enjoy dinners at range of lovely restaurants.
  1. Claimed to be 'delirious with the heat' today after leaving air conditioned coach for two hours in historic town.
  1. We went on an organised long walk through an area of outstanding natural beauty, just up his street, I thought. He was disappointed in it. The gorge was "too stony".
  1. Following gorge walk, his legs were "a bit sore" when descending stairs.
  1. Foreign chocolate not up to UK standards.
  1. World heritage site "a bit boring" and "just a load of stones".
  1. Doesn't like "being told things by people" i.e. tour guide with expert knowledge of ruins.

Etc etc. I'll spare you the rest.

Is this inevitable? Do they all turn into whinging bastards? We know loads of them, and I always thought DH compared well. He doesn't!

It's enough to put me off going on holiday with him again.

Do I need to put LIGHT HEARTED, LIGHT HEARTED to prevent people telling me that my marriage is over and I should leave him? I have, just in case.

Tell me that I'm not the only one!!

All this has reminded me just how much I'm NOT looking forward to our holiday. I also hate no pavements and loads of things mentioned on this thread. And sand in the bed when I've not even been near a beach. Grrrrr.

livefornaps · 08/08/2017 11:33

Bahaha, I love your use of "causing dismay"

annandale · 08/08/2017 11:36

Don't go VM. We were going to camp Monday Tuesday this week but given the weather we cancelled and are smugly at home doing enjoyable things with a roof over our heads.

fartsinbed · 08/08/2017 11:41

How long have you had him now ? If he doesn't take you for a midnight stroll then end up ravishing you mercilessly in the surf, consider trading him in for a younger model.

livefornaps · 08/08/2017 11:49

Also I am dismayed at the fact I read many a witty post without registering the user name but now Martin is known by all and sundry (guess that pathetic little sign-off strategy did work grrrrrr)

HazelBite · 08/08/2017 11:52

Dh is self employed and would spend the whole time away worrying that there would be no work when he got home, and worrying about what everything was costing as he wasn't earning while he was away.
we stopped having "holidays" and just had short breaks, usually in the UK so he could easily get back for work if needed Hmm
It was always down to me to book and pay for any break.
I am pleased to say that aged 60 he has grown out of it, and surprised me with a trip to New York for our ruby wedding Grin

I do think that the OP's other half would prefer a holiday perhaps in a cooler place, most of his grumbles relate to a hot beach holiday and I think that this is something that is less attractive for many as they get older.

MartinJD · 08/08/2017 11:54

*Yet you did not know that the Spar is still commonly found 'overseas'?

Cheers

Mr V Messy*

I tend to holiday in more salubrious locations if i'm being honest, i'm a bit out of touch with camp site facilities TBH!

Cheers!

KeiraKnightleyActsWithHerTeeth: Sorry to hear about your injury! Get well soon!

I think to many men, the thought of spending 24 hours a day with their wife for a week or two is a daunting prospect!

MartinJD · 08/08/2017 12:10

Me and the duchess always have an absolutely fantastic time on our hols, although that may have something to do with not having to sleep in a tent! :)

Cheers,
M.JD

Viviennemary · 08/08/2017 12:30

Grin annandale. Are you me!

DixieFlatline · 08/08/2017 12:31

Interesting. Now I see what a PP meant about Martin not quite writing like a man.

MovingOnUpMovingOnOut · 08/08/2017 12:35

Martin is a virtual drinking game. It's the only logical explanation. You have a shot after every sign off.

TBH I find the twee sign offs used by another poster infintely more irritating for various reasons.

PumpkinSpiceEverything · 08/08/2017 12:55

Grin dying with laughter reading this OP, makes me think I'm not the only one who suspects their husband is secretly an angry old woman underneath it all.

Try not to let it make you resort to murder ruin your holiday, his fault if he can't enjoy it. Leave him in a hotel! Lol

AlpacaPicnic · 08/08/2017 12:57

Until I stumbled upon this thread I didn't realize my DH had so many older brothers... He's 42 going on 75 and he's been like this for at least the last 15 years.

We went to Florida. Did the Mouse... the whole works. I asked him to put on sunscreen. He did. Then moaned that 'it stung' his skin. Refused to put any more on and got burned. Then moaned that the sunburn hurt.
We went to Chicago. He got very cross with me because I didn't know the way through the unfamiliar airport that neither of us had been to before but didn't want to stop walking to find a map or look at some signs.

This year I went on a dream trip. Dream because I had been dreaming and planning it for 20 years. Dream because I went all by myself and left him at home to 'look after the cats'. He had a week off by himself to play Xbox games. I travelled across America. We both had a great time.

I also had a lovely afternoon out at Bed, Bath and Beyond, and Walmart! I had planned to go to a site of historical importance but I missed the bus so went to a shopping mall instead. It was fab... I pottered, I browsed, I marvelled...

I think we have found a winning solution.

Best wishes,
AP

Last year I stayed in a beautiful hotel in a very salubrious part of a European city known for its culture and there was a Spar just across the road (very handy to buy snacks) so I don't know why you keep banging on about camp sites.

Cheers you twat

Mr V Messy

annandale · 08/08/2017 13:09

Probably VM Grin. On the negative side we are feeding a lot of other people's animals while they are away but it means a good old nose round their houses so it's not all bad.

AngelaTwerkel · 08/08/2017 13:13

"I tend to holiday in more salubrious locations if i'm being honest, i'm a bit out of touch with camp site facilities TBH!"

You're typing this from a Premier Inn located on a roundabout outside Scunthorpe, aren't you, you sad twat?

Fondest regards
AT, OBE

Lilyhatesjaz · 08/08/2017 13:23

I went to what I believe was the same archaeological site with my parents once and my dad commented that it was just like Jewsons yard

MartinJD · 08/08/2017 13:39

AngelaTwerkel : You've got me there!

Ooooh OP, I don't suppose you're in Cyprus are you? 😉

Nope, mine is like Walt Disney on crack. Always excited about everything and I'll be honest it has pissed me off on several occasions. He even made a strangers dog wee with excitement the other day! I just wish he could be in a grump from time to time. I bet DH has made himself a list like yours for all my whinging. We are not on holiday btw, this is just general life for us :D

The80sweregreat · 08/08/2017 14:44

I hate sand too. Its a pain.
Im afraid that i tend to be the moany one on holiday , i think my dh could write all that about me to be honest.
Not that my dh is perfect, but he gets on better with heat and just seems to enjoy holidays more than me at times. I try to curb the moaning though, your dh needs to learn this skill.

LemonRedwood · 08/08/2017 14:51

There's a Spar in our luxury resort in Maui
