I'm probably going to get a Mumsnet lecture: however I think strangers asking to take pictures of my son when we're out for a family meal every single weekend and for others to join our table to pet my son like he's a puppy is overstepping boundaries. Am I wrong ?? A: he's not a dog so petting him is just weird and b:he is my child he's not an art piece so strangers taking photos are a complete Nono.

This is so weird. I think you must be deluded. My toddler is quite cute, proper mop of blonde curls, smiley Botticelli cherub cute. People often comment or ruffle his hair. It's nice. But no one has ever wanted a photo of him or been all weird like you suggest. I put it to you that you are, in fact, a tiny bit mental.
