AIBU?
To think Prince George will never be King?
SerfTerf · 29/07/2017 17:26
Or if he is, the next generation won't be?
We were talking about it at lunch. I just have the strong feeling now that the monarchy will fizzle out at some point in the next 50-100 years.
It's not an active "want" just a notion.
Two of us talking earlier felt similarly but the other three were aghast.
So, AIBU?

I'd like to see the abolishment of the monarchy as far as the queen being he's of state; the family and their history bring lots of ££££s to the UK.
I would love to see Harry go off and become an actresses husband too. They're definitely moving away from the old. Xxx

Highly unlikely. Whilst odd members of the royal family has a popularity that waxes and wanes, by and large the institution of monarchy is stable.
Left wing sites such as this cause a congregation of like minded individuals with the same republican agenda so are not a true reflection of public mind set.
Banderwassnatched · 29/07/2017 17:31
I would love that but I don't think it will happen. I habe a lot of friends on tye far left who actually think 'we'd be better off with just the monarchy'- there's a lot of loyalty out there. I think if we gad a referendum on it, we republicans would lose.
SerfTerf · 29/07/2017 17:36
YABU, a lot of people (me included) think that the monarchy is a real force for good. I also love the tradition and sense of continuity.
You think enough people feeling as you do will save it?
Would you expect a referendum? (I don't have a clear prediction myself, I just feel everyone's enthusiasm waning including William and Harry's).
You don't think maybe they could quit?

I don't think prince ggeoge will be king in my life time as that mean 3 people will have die 1st . While I expect I will be around for queen death . I might me for prince Charles but I really hope I am not for prince William .
I think the world will be a different place so who knows

The key thing governing when George would accede the throne is how long William lives.
TBH, we're looking at a run of 60+ kings if the monarchy does endure.

About a third of the nation's of the world's countries are monarchies.
I think the 'if it ain't broke don't fix it' mindset will prevail.
MN is pretty unrepresentative of the country at large in regards to the monarchy. Which even in the annus horibilis had greater public support in UK than in Australia, where the referendum was to keep.
Given what we have seen of what happens when the public elect a head of state such as Trump, the appeal of a non-political, long lasting one increases.
There will always be a mixed opinion of Charles (as the tabloids hate him). But the following generation seem to to be doing fine.
SerfTerf · 29/07/2017 17:43
That's the thing.
Charles doesn't seem popular (I don't mind him myself) and now I think William is fast squandering his early popularity too.
Two unpopular Kings, the second reluctant during a period of growing individualism, globalisation and demographic change.
I just can't see it lasting.

Let's face it, they're just ordinary people, all this "royalty" nonense is ridiculous. France got rid of theirs and they have practically more tourists visiting them than anywhere else on earth. Once they've gone we'll get the entire profits from the crown estates too. Presidency run like Ireland's, sounds good to me.
