To think Prince George will never be King?

Or if he is, the next generation won't be?

We were talking about it at lunch. I just have the strong feeling now that the monarchy will fizzle out at some point in the next 50-100 years.

It's not an active "want" just a notion.

Two of us talking earlier felt similarly but the other three were aghast.

So, AIBU?

I actually think that given the current instability with Brexit and a minority government people will be more likely to support the monarchy as it represents stability and continuity. I may well be wrong though.

lessworriedaboutthecat · 29/07/2017 20:25

Certainly I don't think there's any appetite for any further constitutional change for the sake of it.

MommaGee · 29/07/2017 20:31

Charles has already indicated he supports a slimmed down monarchy. Teats what got Andrews knickers in a twist over has girls. They need to tyke a leaf out of Sara's book imo

BootCampSucker · 29/07/2017 20:31

But what do you foresee actually happening? A majority of the populace taking to the streets to demand an end to the monarchy?

Cel982* - potentially, yes.

SerfTerf · 29/07/2017 20:34

My feeling is that the inevitable reversal of Brexit will come with a wave of anti-tradition, pro-youth feeling that could loosen the monarchy @lessworriedaboutthecat . Look at all the ageist insults that have been thrown about while feelings ran high about the In/out referendum.

Of course, I'm talking about in decades ahead, not right now.

the white monarchy will thankfully die away along with the church of England

So no other denomination or religion then? Just the white royals and one particular segment of Christianity?
Perhaps if Harry and Meaghan have kids we should just tell William et Al we're practicing positive discrimination and giving the job to baby Hargen (is Hargen a thing yet? I know the press like to amalgamate names)

MommaGee · 29/07/2017 20:36

*over HIS girls, sorry

SerfTerf · 29/07/2017 20:38

I was more intrigued by the "Yeats" momma. But I expect filthy gossip about Andrew TBH Smile

BoysofMelody · 29/07/2017 20:38

For all the talk of the queen being a steady pair of hands and dutiful in the extreme, all of her children are ill suited to the role of King or Queen

Charles: meddlesome and cranky
Anne: rude and arrogant (very much her father's daughter)
Andrew: corrupt, rude, sexually incontinent and crass
Edward: ineffectual and dim

Not a single one of them has the making of a decent monarch.

SerfTerf · 29/07/2017 20:38

TEATS ffs. My autocorrect has gone all literary.

I don't think it's down to the poor sods who end up being Royal. None of those wains chose to be born, especially William who even now is dreading it.

derxa · 29/07/2017 20:40

The more I read MN the more I love the Royal family.

SerfTerf · 29/07/2017 20:41

No, I agree @maddiemookins16mum, I feel quite sorry for them.

MommaGee · 29/07/2017 20:43

Aha as innocent "thats what's got Andrew knickers into a twist about his girls" is Charles not wanting to give them more work lol. They need to hurry up and marry rich men or get a job!! No one will care they don't work once their disband is paying for it not their father

WannaBeDelgadaToFitInToMyPrada · 29/07/2017 20:46

Hargan! Grin

SunEgg · 29/07/2017 20:46

What exactly does the monarchy do? As far as I can tell, they have vast amounts of wealth, and still take huge amounts of public money to fund their extravagant lives. Makes no sense at all.

JemmyBloocher · 29/07/2017 20:49

The Royals are the biggest scroungers off the State that exist. Can't abide them.

Apropos a post above, there's no way I would say that this is a left wing site. Not by a long way.Hahahahaa

PrinceGeorgeTheCutest · 29/07/2017 20:52

I will rule you all!!! And my pesky little sister...

Amouselivedinawindmill · 29/07/2017 20:55

I don't think the monarchy will be abolished Grin my goodness!
However I would love to see a seriously down graded monarchy, like some European royals....hopefully progressive Royals like William down grade it - and hand over palaces and stuff and make it smaller and streamlined. Get rid of all grace and favour minor royals too.
I think William will change much for very sake of his son, basically the more they down grade it -the more FREEDOM he will pass to his son

SerfTerf · 29/07/2017 20:59

Hi George Smile

phlebasconsidered · 29/07/2017 21:10

I'd like rid of the lot of them. And I don't want to be paying for them after we've got rid of them either. It sickens me that William lives and owns large tranches of land where I live and work as a teacher, yet I'm bringing in snacks for the class because they are hungry. It's the fact that he is living off the land, taking a profit off it, being subsidised to live in a fuck off big house on it, while I'm seeing parents working the land not making ends meet. If he and his wife had any moral compass at all they would just rescind the throne. But they don't.

ellestyle · 29/07/2017 21:11

So so true, and anyone who doesn't agree is deluded. What bloody mugs we are, how they must laugh at us.

Riversleep · 29/07/2017 21:11

Actually I think however much they say they don't want to be Royal, the reason they will downgrade is because they want to cling onto it for as long as possible. If Charles or William thought that there was some kind of civil unrest going on or talk of a republic, they will evolve into the Swedish monarchy pretty sharpish. Even if it means handing back a few palaces and cutting loose all the cousins etc.

lessworriedaboutthecat · 29/07/2017 21:15

People have been asking when we'll get rid of the monarchy for hundreds of years though and its still here. Its been more unpopular in the past by far than it is now.
