To think Prince George will never be King?

Or if he is, the next generation won't be?

We were talking about it at lunch. I just have the strong feeling now that the monarchy will fizzle out at some point in the next 50-100 years.

It's not an active "want" just a notion.

Two of us talking earlier felt similarly but the other three were aghast.

So, AIBU?

I think Kate is bolstering them up at the moment , I think we could do abit less of William and Harry moaning and over sharing their problems . I'd like to see and hear a lot more about what Kate is about, she looks patient and charming all the time. Diana really bolstered the Royal profile and she really was more interesting than any of the Royals .

SerfTerf · 29/07/2017 18:44

My solider is hovering over "Versailles" on my monarchy bingo card Smile

I think he will meddle in everything. I think he'll become political. It's possible what he does will be popular but he'll either wind up the Govt or the public.

BubbleBed · 29/07/2017 18:46

Having visited Sweden and Denmark recently, both with Royal Families of their own, I don't think ours will go anywhere. We aren't alone in the monarchy.

WannaBeDelgadaToFitInToMyPrada · 29/07/2017 18:50

I dont know. How do you all visualise it being disolved? How many polls and referenda?

brasty · 29/07/2017 18:50

I think Charles will be a nightmare as King. He is too arrogant and thinks his opinions on a range of things actually matter.

WannaBeDelgadaToFitInToMyPrada · 29/07/2017 18:52

He'll be king by this time next year I think.

ClashCityRocker · 29/07/2017 18:55

If they keep their collective mouth shut and keep the flag waving massive happy they'll be fine.

I've no particularly strong republican feelings but, for all the privelage, it's not a family I'd want to be born in to.

SerfTerf · 29/07/2017 18:56

I don't know @WannaBeDelgadaToFitInToMyPrada I just feel too many things shifting against them. Or rather, against the institution of monarchy in its current form.

If a desire to downshift came from inside the monarchy, presumably there'd be no referendum but if there was a major shift in public feeling against the monarchy, then there might?

@Lynnm63 you're probably right judging by the black spider letters. Unless he has great self control and is clear about HMK being a very different job from POW?

WannaBeDelgadaToFitInToMyPrada · 29/07/2017 19:01

But can you imagine opinion against them turning so far against them that a poll about a referendum would even be discussed ???

I just cannot see publ8c opinion swaying that far against them.

Lynnm63 · 29/07/2017 19:02

That's possible @SerfTerf. He could go either way he's had a great role model in the Queen. I like the Duke of Edinburgh though I met him once when I was at school as part of DofE. We had to present a display about mortgages I don't remember why. He was lovely to a shy 15 yr old and put me at ease.

inkzooka · 29/07/2017 19:03

I think the monarchy is quite shit, frankly. I hope it's abolished.

WannaBeDelgadaToFitInToMyPrada · 29/07/2017 19:04

I think he realises he's not the most popular royal and he will walk a tightrope of diplomacy. He will basically keep a low profile and not do anything too risky.

inkzooka · 29/07/2017 19:08

People make the Queen out to be a cute little old lady when she really isn't. The monarchy has a very bloody past that people are happy to ignore because ~the tourism~!

I'm sure the UK will manage without plates with the Queen's face on. It has a lot going for it in terms of history - less so culture where I live though Grin

Nah, I do like the UK, but I don't think the monarchy is needed at all. They're just a very rich figurehead family now that people like to fawn over and act like they're doing all of these amazing feats.

WashingMatilda · 29/07/2017 19:14

'Having visited Sweden and Denmark recently, both with Royal Families of their own, I don't think ours will go anywhere. We aren't alone in the monarchy'

No, we aren't, that's very true. But neither of those monarchies, or any others in Europe, cost their 'subjects' (as ultimately that's what we are) even nearly as much.
I'm not sure I would abolish them completely, but let's not pretend we live in a democracy when we have such a bloated, over paid and UNELECTED head of state that has a lot more power than I think people realise.

IndianaMoleWoman · 29/07/2017 19:17

Embekkison1 I think the opposite about Kate. Say what you will about Diana, but when I was growing up she was always on the news giving speeches and vocally supporting her causes.

I don't even know what Kate's voice sounds like. She is beautiful and very good at smiling/waving/small talk but I think she's a backwards step; she seems to be there to be looked at, not to be listened to, which is a bit depressing for a woman in the 21st century.

WashingMatilda · 29/07/2017 19:18

And that's not even including what we pay for 'minor' royals. It's fucking obscene.
Why are we spending millions of pounds on Katherine Worsley (the Duchess of Kent) or Marie von Reibnitz (Princess Michael of Kent) when public services are being squeezed and cut???

Riversleep · 29/07/2017 19:18

I get the feeling George won't get to be king either. I'd be massively surprised if he is King of Australia, and probably not Canada, so it will be just us and a few islands somewhere. I do hope Charles gets rid of all the hangers on when he is King. I think if they want to survive, they need to cut off the siblings Andrew and his daughters and let them fend for themselves. The monarchy should just be the monarch and their children, like the First Family in the US. before Trump, who seems to be determined to employ his entire family

Riversleep · 29/07/2017 19:21

I agree with you about Kate Indiana She doesn't seem to have any kind of personality at all, but then neither does William.

WannaBeDelgadaToFitInToMyPrada · 29/07/2017 19:21

If she is a backwards step it is because the public cant separate their anti monarchy sentiments from objective appraisal of how the various royals do in the public eye. I dont care either way but she cant express an opinion! She'd be roasted. She has no choice but to work very hard at hiding whatever makes her her, and the smallest price is being branded boring.

Cary2012 · 29/07/2017 19:21

I think Charles will be a rubbish King. And the thought of Queen Camilla fills me with horror.
I too think Charles will be King within a year.

alcibiades · 29/07/2017 19:24

I like what OlennasWimple said: I don't think that we will get rid of the monarchy in so short a period, but I can see us moving more and more towards the European model with a slimmed down Royal Family (it's already smaller than previously) and less formal genuflecting towards them - especially the “less formal genuflecting”.

All the stuffy, formal stuff probably originates from the notion that the monarch is anointed by God, which of course makes them so very much more important than the rest of us. The Queen wasn’t destined to be queen, she only became queen because her uncle bunked off. So all the specialness had to be even more special. The Queen does, I think, have that belief, and I’m certain that Charles does as well. (Not forgetting Andrew’s obvious sense of entitlement.) So it all makes for rather pretentious attitudes.

The younger generation of William, Kate, and Harry seem to be much more human, and I think that by the time William gets to have more say in how the institution is run (don’t think he has much say at the moment) then the RF is more likely to resemble the European/Scandinavian versions where even their senior royals seem to be more like representatives of the people rather than superior beings.

WannaBeDelgadaToFitInToMyPrada · 29/07/2017 19:24

I had a feeling that George Michael was going to die just before Christmas. Im a bit of a gypsy. So Queenie, stay warm. Take vitimins

RiverAB · 29/07/2017 19:25

I think as we become more multicultural the white monarchy will thankfully die away along with the church of England.
