Df has burnt my garden decking. Aibu to be quite upset? Have said he will sort and pay but I know it will take months.

OP posts:
keeplooking · 12/06/2017 01:21

How did it happen?

Pemba · 12/06/2017 02:11

Father, friend or fiance?

Ariawyn · 12/06/2017 07:49

Why will it take months?

harderandharder2breathe · 12/06/2017 07:51

He's said he'll sort and pay, if the reason it will take months is down to him, tell him you'll sort it and he can pay.

MrsOverTheRoad · 12/06/2017 07:57

Ariawyn Presumably because "DF" can't afford to pay it all at once. It's obvious.

BusterGonad · 12/06/2017 08:07

With the little bit of information you've given I think YANU to be upset but there isn't really anything you can do about it. DF can't afford (I'm guessing) to buy you new furniture at the moment so all you can do really is suck it up!

Trills · 12/06/2017 08:16

I thought it would take months because they'd have to get professionals in to fix it, and they are busy this time of year.

Not because whoever this F person is couldn't afford to pay.

YANBU to be upset that your decking is damaged.

We can't tell if you would be reasonable to be annoyed at your F because we don't know how it happened. Was it an understandable accident, or caused by carelessness or deliberately ignoring warnings?

WomblingThree · 12/06/2017 08:20

"Expensive flooring" and "garden decking" aren't really the same thing.

In a garden I would say there was more a more reasonable expectation of damage, with BBQs, bad weather, animals and dirt. A little more information in your OP would be helpful!

Ceto · 12/06/2017 08:25

Claim it off insurance?

AlternativeTentacle · 12/06/2017 08:27

but I know it will take months.

Get the money, order the decking from B&Q, and get him to replace it. Sorted in a few days. Or is that just me?

Crumbs1 · 12/06/2017 08:31

I can't see that unless it was malicious or real stupidity that he should pay. Upsetting that you've paid to make home improvements but garden surfaces get damaged. York stone slabs get cracked, wood is liable to burns or stains, grass dies in patches. It happens.
Do you need to replace it all? Can you not just have the damaged planks replaced? Is the damage really that awful that it doesn't just look weathered?

Shakirasma · 12/06/2017 08:32

Can't you put in an insurance claim and DF pay the excess?

BarbarianMum · 12/06/2017 08:33

How did it happen?

WateryTart · 12/06/2017 08:37

Ask your insurance company if it's covered.

sparechange · 12/06/2017 08:45

YABU to call decking 'flooring'
But we need a lot more detail on how it happened

SoupDragon · 12/06/2017 08:49

I guess it depends whether he accidentally dropped a BBQ coal on it or dowsed it with petrol and torched the lot.

Loopytiles · 12/06/2017 08:49

Details needed!

ComputerUserNotTrained · 12/06/2017 08:53

Structural or cosmetic? How extensive are we talking about here?

troodiedoo · 12/06/2017 08:54

Decking should be hard wearing.particularly if it was expensive. We need details please, ideally with a diagram.

AyeAmarok · 12/06/2017 08:57

What a daft AIBU.

echt · 12/06/2017 08:58

In the absence of details, I'm imagining a giant decking bonfire.

londonrach · 12/06/2017 08:58

Decking isnt flooring and kinda looks cheap (ok my view so im being unreasonable here as its my pet hate as looks so ugly, not good for drainage, wildlife and very slippy when wet 😜) so your friend helping you there however if you damage something df should offer something to help fix it but depends on how damage happened. More details op and photo or diagram or didnt happen.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 12/06/2017 08:59

The whole lot doesn't have to be replaced surely? Just the burnt bit.

troodiedoo · 12/06/2017 09:01

diagram or didnt happen

I intend to say this a lot today Grin

BusterGonad · 12/06/2017 09:05

London I agree with the fact decking is very slippery, I hate wet decking, I shit myself panicking that I'm going to fall over!
