To think current fashion is f*cking hideous?

Probably BU but I went shopping the other week as I needed a few tops. I saw:
Bright yellow playsuits
Hideous tops with the shoulders cut out
Skirts that look more like belts
Jeans with so many rips that they are indecent
Tops that aren't even decent (too short)
Cardigans with no sleeves (why, you wear a cardigan if it's cold surely)
AIBU to think that it's hideous and nobody would want to be seen dead in it?

Yup, don't get the whole 'cold shoulder' look at all. If warm enough to reveal shoulders, surely too warm for full sleeves and vice versa? Personally, I have carefully honed my 'eclectic' style in charity shops/Ebay and have no regrets!

Wickedstepmum67 · 11/04/2017 18:49

GloriaV, hello fellow 'Gudrun' fan! Wave your colourful prints in the air with pride. Must say, her prices have risen a bit too much for me though.

AcaciaYou · 12/04/2017 07:44

Brand Alley have heavily discounted Nicole Farhi items today. Not a frill or cold shoulder in sight.

Destinysdaughter · 12/04/2017 22:47

This was mentioned on another thread, there's some nice stuff!

Joe Browns is a bit 'eccentric art teacher' but it's one of those places you can occasionally find something. I've spotted one dress already.

I aspire to Gundruns. It's all very nice, and flowing and tranquil looking, but I can't carry off the shapeless look. Sacks and spuds spring to mind. Grin

Has anybody tried Joanie? It keeps being recommended to me. I like the style, and it's cheap, but I wonder if the quality is ok?

lbsjob87 · 12/04/2017 23:39

These are the exact same items that will be on the sale rail for months. I always look through those and think "no wonder you never sold that, sack your buyers".

Cardigans with no sleeves , I am 100% with you on that- WTAF?
Also, is it me or is everything gold and/or shiny right now, as well as holey and frilly? Ticks all my boxes.....
I'm going to start a shop that just sells normal clothes in normal sizes.

Like men's shops do.

I'll make a fortune.

Deathraystare · 13/04/2017 11:15

And ban the colour Elastoplast pink.

Haha! I call it menopause pink! It is that dusty shade of pink that looks faded and drab, right?

GreenShadow · 13/04/2017 13:20

I hate the trend (although this has been around for a couple of years) of breast pockets on t-shirts - Next currently have an oversized pocket which looks to me like one of those special breastfeeding tops. www.next.co.uk/g75116s1#466990

WineAndTiramisu · 13/04/2017 14:16

I hate that i can never find tops that are long enough, my belly does not need to be on view to the world...
Love skinny jeans though, but am an apple shape, so they suit me quite well.

I just want to find tops that i can wear on a normal day, but also nice enough to go to the pub in, but seems impossible.

SailAwaySailAwaySailAway · 14/04/2017 11:20

M & S today was dreadful. Utterly dreadful.

floraeasy · 14/04/2017 12:23

I go to Long Tall Sally in my desperation for long enough tops. They are not very inspired though.

leccybill · 14/04/2017 18:14

Went shopping today. If you look, people are browsing but nobody's buying. I had £200 to spend and I came home with an embroidered make up bag.

It's Spring, it's cold and wet. I want thin knits, full length trousers, and a Spring jacket.

Instead, I saw cold shoulder everything, things full of holes or rips or ruffles, and a sea of blush pink and khaki. It's all a load of shit.

OhMrsQ · 14/04/2017 18:20

I hate the cut out shoulder thing too. Why why do they do it??

There appears to be a new fashion happening here - tops with a bra over the top???

ToastDemon · 14/04/2017 18:26

What is that ASOS monstrosity?!
They're just ripping the piss now I think Grin

Destinysdaughter · 14/04/2017 18:31

Haha I sure as hell aren't going out with my bra over my top, I'd knock someone's eye out!Grin

brickinitIam · 14/04/2017 19:24

That's all we want really.

You try getting hold of a spring jacket. Its next to impossible.

brickinitIam · 14/04/2017 19:26

OhmrsQ, that's a joke right?

leccybill · 14/04/2017 19:36

I know Joules is a bit of a safe mum-uniform on here but they have a few good bargains in their Clearance section, depending what size you need here.
I've just ordered the Cilla woven trousers for £15 to wear with a plain white t-shirt or vest - that's if I can find one without ruffles and holes and all that jazz.

GlitterGlue · 14/04/2017 21:35

Went shopping today. If you look, people are browsing but nobody's buying.

So true. I popped in after work the other night. Loads of people browsing in the likes of Zara and H&M, but hardly anyone at the till. Or in the changing rooms.

I wanted a couple of plain fitted t shirts and thought Zara would be sure to have some. Did they fuck. It was belly tops and ruffly shite a gogo.

Graphista · 15/04/2017 12:22

Anyone think the price points are an issue too? I'm on a tight budget as I've said but of course I have friends and family with more funds available and even they baulk at spending £40+ on basic t-shirt

So everyone waits for the sales and even then the mad styles we're talking about on this thread don't sell.

Graphista · 15/04/2017 12:23

" Or in the changing rooms." Exactly people not even seeing stuff they think they MIGHT like

illegitimateMortificadospawn · 15/04/2017 13:27

I find it interesting that prices have stayed at the same level despite the wholesale replacement of cotton, silk and wool mixes with nasty polyester and the like. So, yes, I do think pricing is an issue. Because we are not mugs.

illegitimateMortificadospawn · 15/04/2017 13:31

Also, if the availability of natural fibres (eg cotton) is the source of the problem, let's have a conversation about it rather than seapping everything out for sweaty synthetics. I'd rather pay a bit more for a decent Merino wool cardigan that washes and wears well than have to keep replacing crappy acrylic ones that pill and go baggy in the wash.

Graphista · 15/04/2017 13:33

It's more I object to paying eg wool/cotton prices for acrylic/nylon fabric!

BeastofCraggyIsland · 15/04/2017 14:04

I went shopping with a friend the other day and we were actually in stitches at how unbelievably awful the clothes were. I didn't see one single thing that I would willingly wear in H&M, Zara, Debenhams, TopShop or Next. I'm not a fashion follower by any stretch, I tend to wear sporty/outdoorsy/surfy casual stuff but I sometimes find a few tops I like in Zara or H&M. Not this time though, barring TopShop Jamie jeans and one H&M jumper that I already have it was all fucking horrific. I'm 5'7 and slim so skinny jeans are fine but the rest of it - ruffles, frills, holes, cut out shoulders, embroidered flowers, cropped tops, awful prints, cheap fabrics, flappy cropped trouser legs, either no shoulders/sleeves at all or massive flappy sleeves, and a hideous colour range of mustards, beiges, sludge greens, peach, insipid pinks... ugh! It all looked so cheap and nasty; if that's 'fashion' they can shove it where the sun doesn't shine.

I buy a fair bit of stuff in Cotswold Outdoor and surf shops which won't suit most S&B-ers but other than that I'm sticking to Uniqlo for basics and merino v neck jumpers, Seasalt for breton tops and Fatface and Saltrock for shorts and the occasional hoody or cardigan - I live in Devon so almost every town has all 3 of those shops. I'm off the high street for the foreseeable future!
