To think current fashion is f*cking hideous?

Probably BU but I went shopping the other week as I needed a few tops. I saw:
Bright yellow playsuits
Hideous tops with the shoulders cut out
Skirts that look more like belts
Jeans with so many rips that they are indecent
Tops that aren't even decent (too short)
Cardigans with no sleeves (why, you wear a cardigan if it's cold surely)
AIBU to think that it's hideous and nobody would want to be seen dead in it?

Graphista - that's what I was getting at clumsily. The quality and fibres have nose-dived but prices have not followed.

Floisme · 15/04/2017 15:25

Maybe it's because it's not very fashiony where I live but I'm honestly not seeing this. Yes the comedy looks you've described are in all the windows but once I'm inside a store and I've walked past the display mannequins, it's still mostly skinnies, chinos, stripy tops, fitted shirts and plain jumpers.

In our local H&M, I'd say 50% is the frilly stuff with funny sleeves and holes in unexpected places but the other half is pretty mainstream. In M&S I'd say there's no more than 15% comedy - although that's the first stuff you see.

On a more positive note, I finally managed to find a knee-length denim skirt last week thank you, scary 90s revival

lidoshuffle · 15/04/2017 15:32

"holes in unexpected places"
That just made me laugh out loud!

SailAwaySailAwaySailAway · 15/04/2017 16:17

One of the things that irks me is that it's all just a carbon copy of what's been round before, with no twist, irony or creativity. That's just sad and lazy.

Graphista · 15/04/2017 16:34

Sailaway I noticed a few years ago that the shops are all so bloody similar. Maybe it's nostalgia but I'm sure I remember in my teens/twenties different shops had a different identity - top shop was 'cool' very fashion forward, Chelsea girl shows age Blush was more edgy, river island was classic/capsule/office wear with classy evening pieces and new look was cheap and cheerful 'hot right now' plus basics a bit like primark now.

Same with shoe shops, dolcis was smart/classic, Barratts a bit cheaper more fashionable, Curtess cheaper still but more likely to have latest styles.

Now I don't even know what shop I'm in as they're all selling the same styles and colours! It's so boring!

I completely agree with this. I find the lack of creativity far more annoying than the odd silly sleeve. Fashion designers have the whole of time and every culture in the world at their fingertips - not to mention their own imaginations - and yet all they give us is an endless recycling of the last 50 years, without even putting a new spin on it.

woodhill · 15/04/2017 17:40

I agree about the stuff in Shops, nothing I like. Also I don't want to buy synthetics at all.

Destinysdaughter · 15/04/2017 17:53

Graphista I remember Chelsea Girl too! I also remember when clothes shopping was fun and there were lots of covetable things. Now, not so much Sad

floraeasy · 15/04/2017 17:54

I really need to sort out my wardrobe. Tired of being frumpy, but it's hard. Never had much sense of style and being older and fatter now and nothing to dress up for....well, sometimes I feel like giving up. But not quite ready to yet iyswim

Floisme · 15/04/2017 17:58

Ah Chelsea Girl - happy, happy days Smile

So who remembers Bus Stop?

woodhill · 15/04/2017 18:02

Even Etam was reasonable

Graphista · 15/04/2017 19:21

Yes I liked etam too - though it was deeply uncool to take a 'Tammy girl' bag into school Grin

leccybill · 15/04/2017 21:47

Oh I loved Etam. I've got a black pencil work skirt from there that's still going strong!

Retailers have definitely lost their way over the last decade or so. Ironically, with there being so much more choice via online shopping there seems to be fewer and fewer options for different body types and lifestyles. The very big 'niche' that M&S used to fill has never yet been taken over by another retailer. Next or John Lewis could easily target that market so why are they ignoring it in favour of all retailers chasing the same 'millennial' customer?

reuset · 16/04/2017 09:47

That sounds right, about the different shop style, Graphista. River Island shops used to be lovely too, all wooden floors, old fashioned ceiling fans and jazz music. Fairly decent clothes too, not high fashion. It looks garish and ordinary now (from the outside, I have not ventured inside)

Ava5 · 16/04/2017 10:30

Online shopping is your answer. I've bought very few things in physical stores in the past 4 years, and my wardrobe is a thing of pride Easter Smile

Graphista · 16/04/2017 16:52

But Ava as several of us have said we don't necessarily want to shop online.

You can't try things on before buying, sizing is some kind of spy code to decipher, returns are a pain and can be costly, colours aren't always accurate in pics or lengths, pics don't always show backs/sides of garments...

I'd rather use a real shop

leccybill · 16/04/2017 17:59

I absolutely love the convenience of online shopping and use it for virtually everything but lately, I like the check the quality (or not) of the fabric of clothes. Also, fit can be all over the place. I hate anything boxy or cropped.

BitOutOfPractice · 16/04/2017 19:42

I do a mixture. If I need something basic or quickly, I'll shop online on sites I trust.

But nothing beats going for a browse and try on. I enjoy it. Usually. I went out yesterday. Found precisely itching

PoorYorick · 17/04/2017 12:29

Thanks to all the links I've clicked on this thread, all my sidebars and my Facebook sponsored feed are now full of the most hideous garbage, with bots telling me I'd look great in them.

BitOutOfPractice · 17/04/2017 14:28

Just been for a mooch round the clothes in Sainsbury's when I popped in for a few bits. Silver pleather sweatshirt anyone?

Also, when will these clothes with faux layers ever disappear. I thought jumpers with collars sewn in were bad enough. Now it's tops with vest tops sewn on top Confused

SunshineBabe · 17/04/2017 14:54

Uniqlo are opening a shop in Manchester soon by the way.

leccybill · 17/04/2017 15:35

Oh , that's good to know. In the centre or the Trafford Centre or somewhere else, do you know?

FruitCider · 17/04/2017 20:16

Omg just read this thread and died laughing whilst nodding in agreement!

I'm 33, size 14 5ft 2 with a saggy belly due to ruined stomach muscles from pregnancy, my arse sags due to losing weight, my boobs sag from pregnancy, Jesus even my thighs sag. I've been resorting to wearing black high waist skinny jeans from Primark with charity shop top finds because the current fashion trend is so awful my safe shop new look makes me gasp in horror and want to stick pins in my eyes.

I'm actually tempted by Boden despite detesting spending more than £30 on a single item of clothing!
