To think current fashion is f*cking hideous?

Probably BU but I went shopping the other week as I needed a few tops. I saw:
Bright yellow playsuits
Hideous tops with the shoulders cut out
Skirts that look more like belts
Jeans with so many rips that they are indecent
Tops that aren't even decent (too short)
Cardigans with no sleeves (why, you wear a cardigan if it's cold surely)
AIBU to think that it's hideous and nobody would want to be seen dead in it?

Oh no wait, I got a bit carried away there, it's not available to buy online, just to view...

I like this blouse though.

Graphista · 10/04/2017 23:02

Like it couldn't wear it I'd look like a sack of tatos!

That's jaeger gone bust!

Just on news

WowserBowser · 10/04/2017 23:07

Ripped jeans with fishnet tights underneath. With the band pulled up really high.

Fuck off

ShoesHaveSouls · 10/04/2017 23:26

I'm right with you all. I can find nothing, NOTHING in the shops or online. I want clothes with a WAIST, otherwise I just look like a blob. I want stuff that doesn't look like something my grandmother would have rejected 30 years ago.

I went to a party on saturday, and I wore a dress that is over 15 years old - because I can't find anything new! I'm amazed I still fitted into it actually - I've had 3 DC since buying that dress.

RETAILERS - I have money to spend at your stores, but you're making it IMPOSSIBLE for me.

GloriaV · 11/04/2017 07:22

I do like this stuff www.gudrunsjoden.com/uk for good cotton t shirts as I am an ageing hippy

Ampersand22 · 11/04/2017 07:29

I don't want anything with the following on it:

Writing
Diamantés

Remarkably hard to do.

SlipperyJack · 11/04/2017 07:59

gloriav, I like Gudrun Sjoden too - I have a striped sleeveless jumper from there which always gets favourable comments. Expensive though!

GlitterGlue · 11/04/2017 08:08

It would also be helpful if high street stores used more realistic models. I'm put off buying even ok things because I know whilst that scrap of shapeless fabric might drape beautifully on a six ft, size 6 model, there is a good chance it will make the average woman look like a busty sack of spuds. And I can't be arsed with returns.

The likes of m&s know that their average customer isn't model like in proportions, so why use them?

And stop designing items with a massive 'feature' across the bust. If you're a B cup plus then a ruddy great ruffle does nothing to enhance your figure.

GlitterGlue · 11/04/2017 08:09

Oh, and add a few darts now and again. Square is not a good look.

illegitimateMortificadospawn · 11/04/2017 08:17

I have been known to put my own darts in M&S blouses and shirts to reduce the square box effect.

Yes, I often put darts in current clothing. Oh, wait - you didn't mean flaming ones...

SimplyNigella · 11/04/2017 08:54

I am in desperate need of some new clothes but am struggling to spend my money. All I want is a v neck, a sleeve and a decent fabric plus free returns if I order online.

Dreardre · 11/04/2017 09:15

I hate the stupid buns and [insert name of town you irrationally dislike] facelifts.

origamiwarrior · 11/04/2017 09:20

I would recommend Debenhams (online). They have so brands that amongst the weirdness, there is a good bit of decent stuff. Phase Eight is frequently good, and Debenhams own surfer brand (Manteray) has some decent (90s) looks.

Start with the sale items (and that is probably as far as you need to go - they always have thousands of tops/dresses etc in the sale). Free delivery over £50. Spend about £300 on your credit card (getting lots of points) and include stuff that isn't a dead cert, but you think might work, and return about £150-worth - the returns are simple (bundle it all into a bag, stick on the pre-paid and take to the post office for proof of postage). They process returns before the money ever leaves your credit card. It's the only way I shop now.

floraeasy · 11/04/2017 09:58

I'm also tall which just limits my options further Sad

Thanks for the Debenhams tip origami

Will have a look now.

millmoo · 11/04/2017 11:14

I feel exactly the same !! What large chested woman can wear a Bardot top and ruffles ??? I certainly can't !! And why do want those massive sleeves that would just end up annoying me !!!

Floisme · 11/04/2017 12:23

I quite like some of the sleeves. I don't mean the silly ones where you have to look out for closing doors or unattended soup. But I think a gentle flare that ends above the wrist can look quite elegant. It also doesn't require you to be thin or have perfect thighs and is wearable, I would have thought, at any age. Why the rage?

FlorisApple · 11/04/2017 12:53

Whatever happened to "normcore"? I was looking forward to that, but it never really seemed to take off. I'm not in the UK, but judging from all the links, I think you all have a point! I make most of my own clothes now, as I can sew simple but flattering shapes in decent natural fabrics, and choose colours that suit me, rather than colours in "fashion." Once you learn how to correctly fit a pattern to your body, it's easy to make something really wearable. I despair at most shops mainly because of the poor fit (I'm a busty 14) and shit fabrics. It shouldn't be so difficult to spend money, but it is!

goose1964 · 11/04/2017 12:58

Went out our local New Look yesterday all beige and khaki really dull, a few pretty tops though unfortunately I last wore a top that short 30 years ago

goose1964 · 11/04/2017 13:07

I have given up on fashion and have gone lagenlook , layers of baggy clothing. It's so comfy

illegitimateMortificadospawn · 11/04/2017 13:41

I'm loving the concept of "unattended soup." Grin

user1471466073 · 11/04/2017 13:56

Agreed, although above all I cannot stand the 'active wear' look! Why? Are you going to the gym or for a run? No? Stopping wearing gym wear then. You look like a dick!

brickinitIam · 11/04/2017 14:06

Oh, and add a few darts now and again. Square is not a good look.

I hate that square, boxy look on a lot of the clothes.
That's not fashion, it's laziness and cutting corners.

Next, as well as M & S are terrible for square, boxy, too-short tops.

CurlyhairedAssassin · 11/04/2017 17:23

Manufacturers are definitely cutting back on fabric. I found a coat (hooded jacket) in our house the other day which I thought a child had left here. Turns out it's a new one of DH! He is tall and stocky. It's tiny, it looks stupid on him because it fits toohigh on the waist, almost shows his belt! but he can't be arsed returning it and insists it's fine.

I found the same problem trying to find a winter coat long enough for DS2 this year. He's an average height 11 year old, but they were all very very short. Found a good one in John Lewis eventually after giving up on Next which had previously been reliable every year for the last 9 years or so for padded winter school coats with hoods. These things should not be waist height for god's sake!!!

Graphista · 11/04/2017 17:36

Coat lengths are a bug bear of mine too I HATE coats that are too short!

What kinda money are you lot on?! £50 for a t-shirt! £150 regular shopping spends? I wish! Well done to you if you can afford that though you're clearly successful in your careers. Oh that we could apply that success to the buyers/designers!
