To think current fashion is f*cking hideous?

Probably BU but I went shopping the other week as I needed a few tops. I saw:
Bright yellow playsuits
Hideous tops with the shoulders cut out
Skirts that look more like belts
Jeans with so many rips that they are indecent
Tops that aren't even decent (too short)
Cardigans with no sleeves (why, you wear a cardigan if it's cold surely)
AIBU to think that it's hideous and nobody would want to be seen dead in it?

Floisme You mean you don't think a Harris Tweed Shooting Waistcoat would be a good look for a thirtysomething Londoner? www.houseofbruar.com/ladies-harris-tweed-shooting-waistcoat-tr40250tealginger/

Floisme · 10/04/2017 15:25

Actually I adore Harris Tweed. It is a thing of beauty. Smile But if I was that model, I'd be tempted to turn the gun on whoever sent me out in that waistcoat.

worriedmum100 · 10/04/2017 15:31

It's hideous out there.

Today I saw a woman wearing a vile peach/coral crimpolene blouse with oversized frills at the elbow, cuff and descending vertically over each boob held together down the middle of the front with a thick white nautical/eyelet rope arrangement. It was so awful I couldn't take my eyes of it so probably gave her the impression it looked great. She was also wearing very ripped jeans and very very shiny silver loafers ...with a fringe/tassle thing.

reuset · 10/04/2017 15:38

Chocolate, I was looking for something new, back end of last week. Couldn't be done.Luckily I remembered an old classic dress, I hadn't much worn, at the back of the wardrobe.

I'm checking out Country Casuals. I am serious!

I cannot sew. Actually, I do like vintage clothing, 70s (but not like some of this in the shops at present) and I can alter it, but patterns and making something I cannot do.

flapjackfairy · 10/04/2017 16:02

Apart from anything else who can afford these prices of country casuals even if you liked them? Which i dont !
I miss bhs for knitwear. I am boring and like v neck soft jumpers and uaually buy in a range of colours and wear with jeans or smart black trousers but cant find any decent ones at all this year !

reuset · 10/04/2017 16:30

I don't think Country Casuals is for me, having checked.

illegitimateMortificadospawn · 10/04/2017 16:41

Thanks to this thread I'm now getting ads for all sorts of horrific outfits, finally replacing a bathroom unit supplier I clicked on a while ago on another MN thread....

leccybill · 10/04/2017 16:55

When I was 17, in 1997, I bought a plain simple 60s shift dress in red. High neck, cap sleeves, concealed zip, just above the knee.
It was from Topshop and cost £18.

I really, really wish I still had it!

LadyFlumpalot · 10/04/2017 18:08

I had a £100 voucher for H&M for my birthday last month. I honestly struggled to spend it. I wanted normal shaped jeans that end at my heel, a couple of basic jumpers and some nice tops/shirts for work. Could I find any? Could I heck. Although, I do like the basics range for cheap and cheerful jersey tops and cheap work skirts.

PoorYorick · 10/04/2017 18:26

It's a shame my baby is no longer at the 'puke cottage cheese all over my shoulder at every opportunity' stage. I'd look so fashionable right now. Especially if I dealt with it by cutting the shoulders out and leaving the spew dripping down my side.

Dowser · 10/04/2017 18:31

Omg bookworm that is hideous

Goldfishjane · 10/04/2017 18:34

I gave away a dark burgundy dress from Warehouse last year, to a 20 something, it wasn't body con but nicely skimming if you get my drift. Just a normal shift in a nice fabric.

I could have sold it to one of you for about £100 now I reckon! Grin

Goldfishjane · 10/04/2017 18:35

Also concealed zip. Sleeveless, but the shoulder straps were enough to cover any bra strap. I now know why she was so grateful when I offered it for free!

BitOutOfPractice · 10/04/2017 18:42

I wondered when someone would say "every other country is so much more stylish than us". I strongly disagree.

Have you been to the Netherlands or Spain recently? And outside Paris France is the land that style forgot in my opinion

StrangeLookingParasite · 10/04/2017 19:50

I don't actually recognise the descriptions of Paris posted - I mean the unflattering ones. Even Monoprix (big supermarket ) has ranges organised in a couple of colourways, in nice fabrics mostly.

Graphista · 10/04/2017 19:58

DAYS of looking and this is the best I've found that I like but no idea on fit/quality. Also I'm restricted to online just now as agoraphobia bad.

Really strange? I've always thought French supermarket clothes are spectacularly dull and shapeless

Destinysdaughter · 10/04/2017 20:00

Hmm I didn't think those European clothes were too bad. Definitely better than some of the shite we've got in the UK right now. Guess it's all relative...

owenjonesismyhero · 10/04/2017 20:10

I thought I was getting old. I am, but I like to dress well. Even Bum 40 has been posting some truly hideous outfits, its like she has given up too.

I get basic t-shirts from Amazon

Graphista · 10/04/2017 20:20

Owenjones have you actually bought that t-shirt?

I get overwhelmed on Amazon and don't know whether to trust reviews/seller/fit.

SlipperyJack · 10/04/2017 22:24

The garments I really don't understand from last winter are the jacquard-type cardigan jacket things. Really, really frumpy, and they were sodding everywhere!

Someone upthread mentioned Woolovers - I can heartily recommend them. I've bought cardigans, Fair Isle jumpers, T-shirts and a gorgeous merino wool jumper dress in scarlet. All washes excellently in the machine on a wool cycle - some of my jumpers are well into their third winter.

leccybill · 10/04/2017 22:52

Wait - since when was Primark online??!!!!!
