To promote her new film. Can't these A listers just wear a classy outfit?

In a 1951 study of 191 cultures, anthropologist Clellan Ford and ethologist Frank Beach reported that breasts were considered sexually important to men in 13 of those cultures

Thanks Rufus. I hadn't found it.

The interesting part is it focuses on breasts being sexually important to men whilst glossing over that a study carried out in 1950 reported 82% of women enjoyed nipple stimulation. I wonder if that figure is coyly understated, but even if it is not, it would suggest breasts are sexually important for women , and physiologically, not just a social construct.

Quencher · 03/03/2017 23:13

Women's sexual revolution / liberation, anyone! Grin

BertrandRussell · 03/03/2017 23:18

So there is no difference in the way we view a topless man or a topless woman? Is that what we are saying? A man walking down the street with no shirt would get exactly the same as a woman doing the same?

RebelRogue · 03/03/2017 23:47

Bert nope but posters keep piping up that a man wouldn't/doesn't need to do such things. Then when "proven" wrong the argument of it's not "the same" comes. Which indeed is not so why ask or make the comparison in the same place?
We're all arguing principles, how much of a feminist ew is,tits and or no tits and whether vanity fair is a women's magazine or not(wtf?!?) with a few cheap shots at ew's character, boobs, looks, talent etc thrown in.

quencher · 04/03/2017 00:23

Just to add. My comment does mean women should be exploited. Women are free to explore their body in which ever way they want. That's the whole point of liberating oneself.

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 04/03/2017 00:36

To be fair to me (which i do try and be ) i am not trying to prove a point as to whether EW is right to wear that top or whether its non feminist or anything like that

Nor me. My only opinion on that photograph is that it's a bloody awful outfit.

coconuttella · 04/03/2017 07:37

^In a 1951 study of 191 cultures, anthropologist Clellan Ford and ethologist Frank Beach reported that breasts were considered sexually important to men in 13 of those cultures^

The point of referencing this study appears to seek to demonstrate that sexualising breasts is unnatural and a product of socialisation wrought by western misogynistic society. Moreover it follows that finding breasts sexually attractive, or being sexually aroused through their touch, is therefore a perverted fetish that's a distortion of 'nature', on the basis 'nature' has ordained that breasts are for feeding infants, and feeding infants only.

It's this kind of anti-sexuality that's both repressing and depressing, and profoundly anti-feminist in my opinion.

Missswatch · 04/03/2017 09:04

I think we should just enjoy boobs without the feminist fun police telling us what we can and can't like

BertrandRussell · 04/03/2017 09:26

......and not thinking about the issue at alll. Fair enough.

RufusTheSpartacusReindeer · 04/03/2017 09:29

Nope cocoa

You made a blanket statement that didnt seem right to me

That was the first bit of information i found about it

I dont give a shit what EW wears

I happen to admire a nice pair of boobs in a good outfit

I once again agree with lass in that its not a nice outfit

Riversleep · 04/03/2017 09:39

From the article linked here, it looks like that one photo is one of many photos. I bet this thread will be picked up by the Daily Mail though and used as yet another stick to bash EW for speaking out on feminist issues.

Dothehokeykokey · 04/03/2017 09:46

AIBU to have seen the thread tiltle and clicked in the hope of seeing some boobage?

I should get trading standards onto the OP as there is no topless action at all.

MutePoint · 04/03/2017 10:30

Well OP seems to have got over her disappointment(and lost interest) pretty quick

Wrong! I MNet via Safari which isn't loading long threads. Just catching up on this thread on my phone.

It's not a outfit it's a costume for a photo. I doubt Emma Watson herself would be seen out in something like that.

Londonsburningahhhh · 04/03/2017 11:53

Scout Willis walked around NY topless and managed to do a bit of shopping.

Londonsburningahhhh · 04/03/2017 12:17

Women are taking a stand they are taking ownership of their bodies. People on this thread have been conditioned to think that boobs should be covered up or your not a feminist. That sadly is oppression your not allowed to own your own body and show it off. The photo is a very tasteful photo she is not showing any nipples. There is a new movement and it's called free the nipple, women want to put what they want on instagram. People are easily offended by a pair of boobs. Young women are fighting against this oppression.

BertrandRussell · 04/03/2017 12:19

"People on this thread have been conditioned to think that boobs should be covered up or your not a feminist."

That really isn't what people are saying.

BertrandRussell · 04/03/2017 12:20

And Free the Nipple isn't that new!

BertrandRussell · 04/03/2017 12:22

Or that movement-y actually.......Grin

CaraAspen · 04/03/2017 12:24

She is not topless.

Londonsburningahhhh · 04/03/2017 12:54

Why are women heavily criticised for what they wear and not men. This thinking does start from a young age as soon as young girl hits puberty she is judged for the choices she makes. Boys are never judged in this way.

"Why are women heavily criticised for what they wear and not men. This thinking does start from a young age as soon as young girl hits puberty she is judged for the choices she makes. Boys are never judged in this way."

Oh, the irony.............

quencher · 04/03/2017 13:56

@bertranrusell irony 😂🤔
Isn't that funny?

Elendon · 04/03/2017 15:24

I agree London

All the other actors within the Harry Potter series did not have this 'sexual' attachment to them. I'm unhappy that Watson went for Beauty and the Beast remake. But I will never judge her for it. She is her own woman and she does what she wants.

You, reader, may well scorn, but this is a fairy tale about Stockholm Syndrome. There is no denying it.

PoorYorick · 04/03/2017 18:36

You might want to Google Matthew Lewis. Check out the images search in particular. You're welcome.
