To promote her new film. Can't these A listers just wear a classy outfit?

"e people go ewww disgusting. Put them away and cover them up"

Yep. That's exactly what "people" are saying. Exactly.

I think women under 50 probably think it's empowering.

That's because it IS empowering. Feminists who wish to supress other women dressing or presenting themselves in a sexually attractive manner are suppressing their feminity.... the irony is plain to see! This prudishness is surely anti-thetical to feminism and is better defined as asexualism.

BertrandRussell · 02/03/2017 11:06

"Feminists who wish to supress other women dressing or presenting themselves in a sexually attractive manner are suppressing their feminity..."

But........

DioneTheDiabolist · 02/03/2017 11:42

Bert, how and where are the non feminists dismissing the things she has said about feminism and her world view?Confused

BertrandRussell · 02/03/2017 11:45

Read the thread, Dione.

DioneTheDiabolist · 02/03/2017 12:04

I have Bert. There are a few posters who have expressed their dislike of luvvies as UN ambassadors, but no posts that are what you describe. It is possible that I have missed a post, that's why I'm asking you to clarify.

BoboChic · 02/03/2017 12:26

Londonsburning - you have explained precisely why she is a terrible role model for the younger generation and should step out of the public eye while she finds herself.

RufusTheSpartacusReindeer · 02/03/2017 12:27

Yay someone with a degree is wearing clothes!!!

Confused

Still not getting it yorick

You take that back misswatch i had awesome tits at 26

BoboChic · 02/03/2017 12:30

"most feminists don't have nice boobs"

Perhaps you believe that feminism is an alternative mode of self-expression for those women whose boobs aren't up to standard to make a statement for them? Confused

DioneTheDiabolist · 02/03/2017 12:42

Most feminists don't have nice boobs.
What are you basing this on Misswatch? I have amazing breasts!Grin

quencher · 02/03/2017 12:46

I think there is a conundrum with the way women dress as a form of expression and what would be deemed sexual for the male gaze.
At the moment we have not crossed that line as women where women can be looked as women and not a product ready to service patriarchy run by capitalism.
Dressing both ways (covering and leaving too much out) can both be seen as a form of oppression. Different societies have used different forms of clothing oppress women depending on nature of their culture.
Covering up to preserve your self for men or leaving everything out for the male gaze. Both benefit men and any woman who decided to dress in any way shape or form is going to be conforming to a certain ideology that can be detrimental to women in one way or another. It might not be in the society we live in but it can easily give justification for men in a different part of the world.

As a feminist, it's hard to judge when there is a blurred line. However, I know what I can say when it's regarding page three or playboy.
I know that women's magazines are or the dailymails side bar is for controlling women to fit into patriarchal ideals of what we want our women, men and girls and boys to be and look like.

Feminist going against Emma is not because they want to police the female body or form. There is a grey area and it's heard to tell if it's by choice or she was made to do so for the male gaze. Or to meet the standard of what is sexual. It does not matter what mag it's in or who reads it. There is a standard over fall. The ideal that apply to all media/ Medium and way of life.

lylasmam2012 · 02/03/2017 12:47

Eh one of the many things feminism is about is supporting women to make their own choices about their own lives/bodies/careers. You are not a feminist if you want to tear her down because she showed a bit of underboob!

quencher · 02/03/2017 12:52

It depends what you mean by nice boobs.

My 34gg could easily do well in a porno or lads mags. I dress well. Jokes are made about my bouncy in the pool and how I should be able to float because of them. small frame.
No I haven't burnt my bra. Matter of fact, wear it more often for back support.

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 02/03/2017 12:57

I am so bored of this "male gaze" point- as if all garments are designed with that in mind and the only reason for choosing anything other than 1984 style unisex overalls is because you are pandering to and pleasing men.

Londonsburningahhhh · 02/03/2017 13:01

Emma Watson can pull of a garment like that because she has the figure for it. Why should she hide herself away because people feel uncomfortable to look. Its not the sort of picture that would end up in a porno magazine or page 3 because she is too covered up.

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 02/03/2017 13:02

Bert, how and where are the non feminists dismissing the things she has said about feminism and her world view?

I don't think anyone did. Plenty of people can't stand her and have said so.

Vestal a declared feminist, has criticised her (or I suppose probably criticised the patriarchal , capitlist construct which forces her to wear these clothes as women of course never actually make up their own minds)

VestalVirgin · 02/03/2017 13:09

'Sorry- I don't see how VV's posts and mine are incompatible. I think that the pressure put on women in the public eye to look a particular way is profoundly disturbing. This is not a picture of a woman wearing clothes she has chosen for herself to wear on a night out- it is a publicity shot.

Exactly. It is a very obviously very unpractical "outfit" - not really clothes.

She obviously doesn't dare move, and looks completely uncomfortable. Not, in any way, "empowered".

I really cannot comprehend how anyone can liken criticism of the decision to pose like this to criticism of the clothes women wear while actually doing things.

I'll add that most feminists don't have nice boobs and as such are envious of nice ones

Uh ... how are you even real? How are you not deeply, deeply ashamed of yourself for even thinking of saying something so utterly, utterly untrue and stupid, stupid, stupid?

How can you even exist while typing such nonsense?

That you feel a need to write this shows that you have not even a trace of a valid argument anywhere in your brain.

And I will report you, because I am 99% sure you are male and trying to derail.

VestalVirgin · 02/03/2017 13:16

Emma Watson can pull of a garment like that because she has the figure for it.

I have the same figure as Emma Watson. Still don't feel the need to expose myself for the pleasure of random strangers who more likely than not see me as object.

Your point?

The fact that you think she can "pull it off" implies that you would be utterly judgemental of her if she were fat.

But that's of course much more, um, feminist than feminists criticising the message she sends to young women by posing for such a photo.

Riiiight.

Missswatch · 02/03/2017 13:20

Vestal it is called an opinion. Are women not allowed opinions? Sounds like you are being a handmaiden here

Londonsburningahhhh · 02/03/2017 13:22

She is an actress at one point in her career she may have to do a sexy scene. I think some of you are thinking to much into this and forgetting she is an actress.

Londonsburningahhhh · 02/03/2017 13:25

My point is she is an actress.

specialsubject · 02/03/2017 13:26

Follow the link - that outfit is not actually the worst. No wonder she is doing the gormless gawp, what a bunch of stupid badly fitting tat.

Isn't she rich enough not to have to do this ? The interview could be done without the comedy rags.

Missswatch · 02/03/2017 13:28

Also she is a woman and a feminist. Her body her choice and such

Londonsburningahhhh · 02/03/2017 13:29

The pictures look theatrical to me.
