I thought I was doing so well this year. DS2 wanted to be Newt Scamander so I found an awesome (and not cheap) costume. DD has a proper wand from the Harry Potter tour so she was lending him that and we have the original book. He was prancing around tonight trying it on.

I double checked the email just to make sure it is actually this Thursday (I have form for getting dates completely wrong, in fact just this week we turned up to the dentists a month early...)

Anyone else as fucking shit as me? I hate World Book Day anyway. Still, this beats the time incompletely forgot so ds1 went as Charlie Bucket, ie wearing normal clothes.

Our school has said no super hero's which has pissed me off but luckily DS has a cat in the hat costume, I have had to buy for DD though as I threw out most of her dressing up stuff just before Christmas

Send him in anyway as it. Its world book day not world Roald Dahl day. Ds has a old PE tshirt with Crayola written on it and a sign saying 'I quit'. He has very bad eczema so these dress up days fill me with dread and require effort to do a 100% cotton none syntheticay one where he sweats and is miserable Reading is reading, doesnt matter what it is

Yeah my daughters nursery has been asking kids to come as a story book character that they're reading at the moment - no way am I spending money to buy another costume, she's either going as Cinderella or a gruffalo.

We're an anything goes school as we work on the logic that whatever a child wants to dress up as, there will be a book about it. It shouldn't have to cost money or cause stress, it's meant to be a fun celebration of books!

He's got a whole laundry basket full of superheroes but I thought I'd take it seriously and do a proper book.

*agree about the '....but its not a proper book' wailing brigade. DH is one of them. 90% of DS class will turn up as Frozen/Superhero (the same thing they wore to EVERY dressup day) - it is because they cannot afford more than one costume, who gives a shit what they read as long as they read. I help in schools so can admit the Superhero costumes do have challenges as they see to empower the wearer with very chaotic behaviour. x30 kids 'saving the world' is a bit of a 'mare

The BEST thing about your children leaving primary school is no more world fucking book days!

Mine would always choose something impossible which would take me ages to make and then I'd go to school and see a sea of football kits (wtf) and disney princess dresses.

I had a set of outfits (either fancy dress or repurposed ordinary clothes) that got passed down through the DC. I had bloody years of World Book Day. And Vikings. And Romans. And Tudors.

I was so relieved when they left primary school and it was all over. But no! DD is in year bloody 10 and already this year they've had a multicultural day.

t shirt, trousers/leggings, headband with ears on it - there's always a cat in some book or other, whatever the author - if there isn't one in Roald Dahl just make it up... oooohhh she's Mr Twibbles from Matilda, her favourite cat.

We have a toy pheasant.

What makes me cross is that with all this money, you'd be better off asking all parents to donate a book and schools might actually be able to afford to run libraries. Much better way to celebrate world book day.

Then kids could come in wearing PJs or anything, and be read stories all day.

Pets At Home sell fluffy toy pheasants for dogs. They have a small and a large version. My dog used to love them, carried one around everywhere like a teddy bear.

The toy pheasant DS took as Danny last year belongs to DM's dog. He had a toy spanner, the flat cap was DH's. We had old clothes and a woolly jumper - apart from the pheasant, not that odd really?

I fucking hate World Book Day and I'm a teacher, those of you who have said the best thing about leaving primary school is no more WBD don't be so sure! I teach secondary, not only do the students have to dress up this year but also the staff. So I have to find myself a costume as well as my 2 primary school DC. DC's school have stipulated traditional stories only and have issued a list of suggested 'yes' costumes and a definitive list of 'no'. I think we'll all be ill that day, I haven't got the time, money or energy for this crap

As teachers, we vetoed this in our school as many of us are also parents and we hate these type of things! I, and others, pointed out that it puts pressure on parents to buy a costume and some of our families cannot afford this.
Heck, I can't afford them!
I found the Christmas jumper one bad enough last year (by that I mean Christmas 2015 ) as I just couldn't afford to buy them for my boys. We had terrible financial problems then which I've only just managed to solve.
I have also pointed out that asking for £1 here and £1 there during December is too much for some families. Several of our families have 3 children at our school and it all adds up. People said oh it's only £1! For some families, they might not actually have a spare £1. I know there have been plenty of times when we didn't. And there we're several things going in that required £1.
I digress! Sorry.
I remember when dc2 had their world book day thingy at nursery. We happened to have a Stuart Little costume which seemed to be ideal till I saw communication saying that it was to be a nursery rhyme character!
I spoke to dc2's key worker and said that we didn't have such a costume and wouldn't be getting one either! She agreed that it was ridiculous and said just to wear anything. I said they should maybe make that clear to all the parents as quite a few had been irked by it. (I knew her well and the conversation was not as snotty as it sounds written down It had been the brainchild of the new head of the nursery but hadn't been discussed with the staff!)

There is no way in hell that anyone would tell me, as a teacher, that I had to dress up for WBD! That's outrageous!
Even if they provided a costume, I still wouldn't!
And these out of uniform days just encourage very laid back behaviour and work attitude, IME!
