Cunting World Fucking Book Day.

I thought I was doing so well this year. DS2 wanted to be Newt Scamander so I found an awesome (and not cheap) costume. DD has a proper wand from the Harry Potter tour so she was lending him that and we have the original book. He was prancing around tonight trying it on.

I double checked the email just to make sure it is actually this Thursday (I have form for getting dates completely wrong, in fact just this week we turned up to the dentists a month early...)

'Come as your favourite Roald Dahl character' it says. Fuckers.

I am so so shit at this.

It kind of works as Willy Wonka if you squint a bit.

Anyone else as fucking shit as me? I hate World Book Day anyway. Still, this beats the time incompletely forgot so ds1 went as Charlie Bucket, ie wearing normal clothes.

arse.

I have raided the dressing up box. ds is going as spiderman again.

ittooshallpass · 27/02/2017 23:37

DDs school refuse to do it. Hurrah!

Misty9 · 27/02/2017 23:53

Ds is reception year and they have stipulated animals. Bloody animals! Ds doesn't even really like animals. Now an astronaut, yes. I'll be attempting a shark costume tomorrow.... and I've just remembered dd's nursery have requested effing dress up too. Argh!

DoubleFunMum · 27/02/2017 23:58

Don't even get me started on f*ing world book day. Just found out TODAY that I have to dress two 4 year olds for world book day on Thurday. FML!

CatsBatsEars · 28/02/2017 00:07

I fucking hate it with a passion too, perhaps we should start a movement and keep our kids off school in protest Grin

Lonelymummyof1 · 28/02/2017 04:24

This post made me laugh.
When I was at school we had a whole week dedicated to workd book day.
Was my fav week of the whole year !

pinkish · 28/02/2017 05:25

My dd chooses what she wants to wear - usually black leggings and a fake-leather jacket - and then makes up a character to suit (one year it was a totally made-up character, another it was Sandy from Grease). I love her!

wornoutboots · 28/02/2017 10:01

school have FINALLY sent out a text telling us it's world book day on thursday. 2 evening's notice!

suggestion for those panicking - Percy Jackson. jeans, hoody, tshirt (with "camp half blood" written on it if you can be bothered), and trainers with some wings stuck on them.

rightsofwomen · 28/02/2017 10:27

HELP. Alex Rider.

Our school never used to do it and how happy I was.

Please help.

KitKat1985 · 28/02/2017 14:25

FFS. After thinking for ages we could just re-use DD's cat costume and send her as Mog the cat, we find out this morning it's a bloody Winnie the Pooh theme. After a bastarding hour spent trying to get her a costume, I realised everything was either sold out, not in her size, or not available for next day delivery. I was just getting desperate and considering the unthinkable - MAKING her something (shudders) when I found a tiger onesie on next day delivery so have ordered that and will send her as Tigger. £15 sodding quid though that I could have spent on something useful!

PoorYorick · 28/02/2017 14:28

Winnie the Pooh? Send her to school wearing grey and she can be the little black raincloud. God, if schools have to do this why do they have to make it so much harder than it needs to be?

PoorYorick · 28/02/2017 14:29

Or use her cat costume without the ears.

PugwallsSummer · 28/02/2017 14:52

Bought an Easter straw hat, some stick on foam flowers and a yellow foam circle and going to make a "Little Miss Sunshine" hat (why a bloody hat, why why why???).

Hoping DD's teacher sees the irony as by all accounts, DD can be a grumpy little bugger at school.

DD is in reception so I guess this is my first of many World Book days 🙄

MyfanwyMontez · 28/02/2017 14:53

My son is 6 and he wants to go as Dan TDM from Trayaurus And The Enchanted Crystal. This is doable - jeans, T-shirt, hoodie, knee pads, goggles and a toy sword. Can't do the blue hair tho! Do you think this would be ok? I know it's a graphic novel but it's still a book .

BiddyPop · 28/02/2017 15:00

We had a few interesting years, when DD was smaller and I had time to be creative. A charity shop purple shirt that I bought for the fabric, was quickly chopped into a tail coat and front end hemmed, made a top hat from cardboard and a walking stick from a length of dowel and a wooden cupboard handle glued together (handle in shed, dowel was about €2 in DIY store), golden ticket made from gold card - Willy Wonka. Regular shinguards on arms, ankle protecting shinguards on legs over black leggings and plain top, (very basic!) cape made from leftover curtain material, borrowed witches broom from BFF 2 doors up, Where's Wally specs and a lightening scar drawn with eyeliner - Harry Potter playing Quidditch.

One year, I had to BUY a school uniform (see below about non-uniform school) for "The Naughtiest Girl in the School"! (Teachers found that one particularly amusing as it was just around the time her SNs were DX'd and she was seen as very like the character - wanted to be good and yet always finding herself in trouble).

Nowadays though, thankfully, DDs school have abandoned the dressing up part. They have an Easter Bonnet parade on Easter breakup day, but otherwise no dressing up days anymore. (As they are a non-uniform school, it was exciting but not so exciting as other schools locally getting out of their uniforms - its a mix of quite creative and quite fashion conscious kids, and the jeans/sweatshirt and tracksuit/sportsgear kids).

Plain black leggings and black top are a great basis for lots. Stripey top can be used for loads too (Where's Wally, pirates etc). If you once make a tail from a stuffed tights leg and a hanger, with a ribbon on top to tie to waists; a headband with cat ears on the top; make or buy some Where's wally glasses (also great for HP); and a wand - you've got the basis of lots of characters for years (and DCs) to come. And hold on to an old pair of PJs or tracksuit to cut up and grubby up to make a scarecrow, POW (Boy in the Striped Pyjamas type), or Incredible Hulk.

moofolk · 28/02/2017 15:17

I just love the title of your thread.
I'm a bit pissed off about WBD theme too. Ours is Roald Dahl or Wimpy Kid, they've just mainly got people in them, right? So can dress up as kids.

We rarely send them in bought costumes so they usually win (yay! kudos! and dad's art degree coming in handy at last).
But what if it's books they haven't read? My youngest two are only 6 and there was a Harry Potter day recently. What a load of bollocks. Better if they can chose something and get into the idea of it.

Theimpossiblegirl · 03/03/2017 19:15

We did it! WBD is over. The kids at my school had such a lovely day, with a huge range of costumes ranging from home-made and simple, incredibly creative, expensive and elaborate and favourites from the dress-up box.

Every child was so happy, it was a really pleasant day and so lovely to see the children admiring each other's efforts, happy and relaxed, sharing books, doing story-based activities and having a day 'off' from the National Curriculum (as much as teachers dare).

They all work so hard, the power of a dress up day cannot be underestimated. I know it's a faff, but it is so worth it.

MrsGuyOfGisbo · 04/03/2017 21:07

Plain black leggings and black top are a great basis for lots. Stripey top
Definitely agree have a drawer with stuuf to improve. Less than 12 months to the next one Grin

OopsDearyMe · 04/03/2017 22:54

The idea that WBD costs parents too much makes me mad, my kids costumes were made from an old pair of tights and an old shirt. Re fashioned. If you can't afford the costume then make it, it doesn't have to be posh. My CD summed it up for me this year when she said it means more that we made it together because its been made with love! That's more important than something shoved in the trolley last minute.

OopsDearyMe · 04/03/2017 22:55

Oh and I am most certainly the person getting increasingly red at the bleeding super hero / super Mario / Disney costumes. Its BOOK bloody day !!!

thenightsky · 04/03/2017 23:10

God. I'm so glad DC left school in 2002 and 2009. i have no recollection of book day thing, thank fuck.

DoloresTheRunawayTrain · 04/03/2017 23:43

Luckily a few of our local schools made it about the books for a change. No ridiculous costumes, just bring your favourite book in and optional teddy bear, dress in your pyjamas and talk about your book.
