Cunting World Fucking Book Day.

I thought I was doing so well this year. DS2 wanted to be Newt Scamander so I found an awesome (and not cheap) costume. DD has a proper wand from the Harry Potter tour so she was lending him that and we have the original book. He was prancing around tonight trying it on.

I double checked the email just to make sure it is actually this Thursday (I have form for getting dates completely wrong, in fact just this week we turned up to the dentists a month early...)

'Come as your favourite Roald Dahl character' it says. Fuckers.

I am so so shit at this.

It kind of works as Willy Wonka if you squint a bit.

Anyone else as fucking shit as me? I hate World Book Day anyway. Still, this beats the time incompletely forgot so ds1 went as Charlie Bucket, ie wearing normal clothes.

I'm not at all creative about costumes and find it all a nightmare. But this year school have asked for the children to bring in a 'prop' from a book for the others to guess the book. DD has decided on making a golden ticket. Much easier than a costume. Culture day is ok as well, we get the option to dress in the colours of the flag for the chosen country. It's a bit of fun for the kids and not difficult. Although predictably enough some people go to town, with genuine saris, bindis etc for India so you feel a bit crap sending your child in wearing a green and yellow t-shirt!!

Toysaurus · 25/02/2017 21:28

I really don't get the fuss. Dress up, don't dress up. Mine are making up their own costumes from things they already own. We don't buy things specially. Parents were stressing out at Christmas about having I buy something for Christmas jumper day. I didn't buy them Christmas jumpers to wear, I haven't got money to throw around for one day so we don't bother. The world didn't end because of it. My six year old has decided to go as the Little Mermaid this year. She's making her own costume out of a length of ancient blue sparkly fabric languishing under her bed. Job done.

Northend77 · 25/02/2017 21:30

Dammit, you've just reminded me about this!! Last year I made some outfits (my girls were only 1 so weren't really into any story books back then!) and I dressed them as Little Red Riding Hood and Pippi Longstocking! This year I haven't really got time to make anything so have raided their dressing up rail and am using one of their halloween witch dresses (which is green and black) and have ordered a Dorothy costume so they are going as Wizard of Oz!

SquitMcJit · 25/02/2017 21:31

I feel a bit sad about people not liking Roald Dahl on here. I loved his books as a child - really loved them. And now my DD is reading them I can hear again what an incredible storyteller he is - amazing wordsmith and really gets what so many children will respond too.

When I read Danny the Champion if the World I feel so sad that his father died when he was little.

Re the whole costume/ World Book Day thing tho, I feel your pain...

Whyisitsodifficult · 25/02/2017 21:32

Yes I've got it, all this talk of going to school in your pyjamas- that's my WBD costume for DS, the boy from The Snowman! Dressing gown on, Bob's your uncle! 😀

MajesticWhine · 25/02/2017 21:32

I fucking hate it and we already had to do dress up last week for sodding charity. I am lacking in inspiration and DD is saying "no" to every suggestion. Decision made : she is going as a Dalmatian in a onsie.

SquitMcJit · 25/02/2017 21:33

Sorry, " of the world" ...

and I meant that Dahl's father died when he was young ( not Danny's).

AQuietMind · 25/02/2017 21:33

Last year I made some outfits (my girls were only 1 so weren't really into any story books back then!)

Where in the world are you that your child is at school age1? Shock

Northend77 · 25/02/2017 21:34

Sara107 I love that idea, its much better and involves the kids as a group much more. Might suggest it when my girls start school (a bit much to ask of nursery kids I think!!!)

Northend77 · 25/02/2017 21:35

AQuietMind my girls are at nursery and they join in with World Book Day too. It's obviously not compulsory but I like to participate

TinselTwins · 25/02/2017 21:36

And fuck nurseries for adopting the nonsense that schools do for the benefit of the PFB parents who think it's cute and like to call their kids childcare "school"
Nursery should be drop'n'run! There's enough effort to keep up with what the older ones need for school!

Teddy1970 · 25/02/2017 21:38

I'm dreading this...DD loves "Room on the Broom", so I'm tempted to send her to school in last years Halloween outfit...

charlestrenet · 25/02/2017 21:40

I honestly don't see wtf dressing up has to do with reading. I don't dress up as a character from a book every time I read one. Much better if parents spent money on books for the school rather than yet another bloody costume.

Beardsareweird · 25/02/2017 21:40

I really feel your pain. I absolutely hate dressing up days- I have no kids but am a Primary teacher. One year, we had a 'pyjama day' to raise money for charity and I was the only member of staff who chose not to wear night clothes. I was hauled in to the Head's office and told off for not joining in. This year, I am taking a toy tortoise in to work (borrowed from my niece) and will be Mrs Silver from Esiotrot. Job done.

Anononoo · 25/02/2017 21:42

I really love it, as do my DC luckily.

SparklyUnicornPoo · 25/02/2017 21:43

DD's school announced yesterday that the children must be able to bring in the book their character is from and explain to the class why its their favourite book, one of the activities will be to write a book review. I swear she only reads books with fucking difficult costumes!

Dsis and her friends went as a text book last year. they were year 13 and not impressed at being told to dress up so they raided the scrap paper box and taped old handouts and worksheets to their tops Grin

I'm a secondary teacher and we do WBD too. We are kind of pressurised as a staff to dress up. I put on jeans and a scabby jumper and say I'm Anna Funder from Stasiland. That shuts the pretentious English teachers up as they have never a) heard of it and b) read any European literature. I'm not an intellectual nor do I pretend to be - just like to get one over on the fuckers.

Narnia72 · 25/02/2017 21:48

Our school is even more prescriptive this year - the BFG. That's all it says - no idea whether it means everyone has to dress up as the BFG, or a character from the book. Well, they're gettting 2 Sophies, and one of the little boy in the film, who doesn't actually appear in the book, purely because I can do all that from existing stuff.

Love the idea of everyone bringing in a book, or doing bedtime stories in pjs. Far less stressful.

EwanWhosearmy · 25/02/2017 21:48

DD is in Y5. Her school has never done wbd dress-up. This year we have a new deputy head and we are dressing up, have an Easter fayre, and loads of similar activities. Joy.

Dragonglass · 25/02/2017 21:48

We have to dress a potato this year! Easier than coming up with a costume though.

SaudadeObama · 25/02/2017 21:49

I have to admit I didn't like world book day. Luckily We emigrated and it seems by world they actually mean UK, so luckily we don't have to celebrate world book day anymore, I asked the school librarian if they celebrate it, she'd never heard of it. Grin whoop whoop! Instead they take books out once a week and every year each child puts on a book show report with their family. I much prefer this because they actually investigate the book rather than just dressing up.

ASilhouetteAndNothingMore · 25/02/2017 21:55

@EssieTregowan Grin
So glad it's not just me...

AndNowItsSeven · 25/02/2017 21:56

Dd is in year seven and they still do world book day. Was it supposed to stop?

WorshipTheGourd · 25/02/2017 21:56

OP we have been told it HAS to be Roald Dahl as well - is this rare?
(1st world book day).
