Cunting World Fucking Book Day.

I thought I was doing so well this year. DS2 wanted to be Newt Scamander so I found an awesome (and not cheap) costume. DD has a proper wand from the Harry Potter tour so she was lending him that and we have the original book. He was prancing around tonight trying it on.

I double checked the email just to make sure it is actually this Thursday (I have form for getting dates completely wrong, in fact just this week we turned up to the dentists a month early...)

'Come as your favourite Roald Dahl character' it says. Fuckers.

I am so so shit at this.

It kind of works as Willy Wonka if you squint a bit.

Anyone else as fucking shit as me? I hate World Book Day anyway. Still, this beats the time incompletely forgot so ds1 went as Charlie Bucket, ie wearing normal clothes.

My ddog loved his pheasant. It squeeked rather annoyingly though.

catchingzzzeds · 25/02/2017 20:13

Both my boys HATE dressing up, reception class DS is going in his own clothes as Harry and his Bucketful of Dinosaurs and Year 6 DS is Alex Rider, also in his own clothes.

Silhouette, I turned up to a packed Dentist's waiting room on Tuesday with three kids in tow, to be told very kindly that our appointment was the 23rd of MARCH.

Our school tried to ditch the World Book day stuff and do nothing for it. The Head thought parents would be pleased/relieved. She got so many complaints that she had to reinstate it all for this year.

(On another note the Roald Dahl theme in some schools is probably because of the centenary)

EssieTregowan · 25/02/2017 20:16

Which adds insult to injury because I'd called to say I was running late to a different appt the day before (Monday) to be told not to worry, it was on the Tuesday. Which I then had to cancel due to the aforementioned dentist appt. Which wasn't.

I hate world book day. I don't have endless money to buy costumes or time to make them!

Bubblysqueak · 25/02/2017 20:16

Love my schools world book day theme- it's bedtime stories. Everyone wears pj's and brings in a story that they like to read at bedtime.also just love working in slippers

Dcs school on the other hand is dress as your favourite character which is a pain in the arsenal!

NapQueen · 25/02/2017 20:17

Bubblysqueak thats what dds school are doing. She and I are very happy!

Bubblysqueak · 25/02/2017 20:19

It's so easy and doesn't leave anyone out or cost any money. The whole school also settle down with blankets and pillows throughout the day for stories. It's a really nice day.

Meluzyna · 25/02/2017 20:19

You do realize that World Book Day is on April 23rd?

The UK seems to have decided that it can hold World Book Day on the first Thursday in March because it prefers it then..... which rather defeats the object of it being world book day. (Misses the point completely.... but was thinking that April 23rd is probably in the Easter holidays quite often so those who hate WBD wouldn't be obliged to do anything about it.)

As far as I'm concerned, there are millions of books with characters wearing "normal" clothes, so I'd just pick one of those if I didn't want / couldn't afford to buy a costume.... How about the Brown children (Judy and Jonathan - so suits a girl or a boy) from Paddington?

crazyoldfish · 25/02/2017 20:19

If it helps- if only for schadenfreude- my secondary school - the librarian appears to have 'decided' that we will celebrate world book day by SLT (which is me) dressing up. I found out in an all staff email..... ( needless to say I'm not her line manager) .

I said I was coming as Anastasia Steele- hasn't gone down well

karmassidekick · 25/02/2017 20:20

Roald Dahl day was not that long ago. Ds will be wearing the same costume again for book day.

Passmethecrisps · 25/02/2017 20:21

Dressing up in secondary sounds absolutely hideous and no way would I be participating. I also rarely do dress down days - I don't have an issue with them but if parents turn up or I end up talking to social workers or the police I would rather not be dressed up as Mrs Twit.

My dd is still nursery and hasn't had this yet. I have found myself already considering cheap and easy costumes - little princess and such luck.

PoorYorick · 25/02/2017 20:22

You all need a cheap black robe and plastic fangs and they can be Count Dracula every year.

Sundance01 · 25/02/2017 20:27

One term my gs had world book day, victorian day, red nose day, sports relief, ambitions day and an easter bonnet compitition - all required an outfit luckily we only had 1 child at the school.

Schools seriously need to get a grip. This was a massive financial burden on many families and extremely stressful for most.

I do not remember either myself or my children having to dress up more than once or twice in our entire time at school and one of those was the nativity tea towel on the head.

GlassSeahorse · 25/02/2017 20:28

I fucking detest world book day. Our school has also decided on Roald Dahl this year again. With a specific book for each year.

I've told my kids they can wear what the bloody hell they like, I'm not fannying around with costumes they'll wear for a few hours. I'm sick of the school dictating the costumes for the last few years.

I may or may not be sick and tired of our schools constant demands for money and the imposing if petty rules whilst overlooking major problems.

And I'm a grumpy bastard.

jennielou75 · 25/02/2017 20:28

I have just been sewing the hem for my costume for book day!!! I actually quite enjoy it although for reasons I can't share we are restricted this year by a theme. My class rather like me dressing up!

reuset · 25/02/2017 20:28

I taught secondary so we didn't have to suffer it. The parents with primary children say they take whatever they have in the dressing up box then connect it, however tenuously, to some literary character, and I don't blame them. I don't understand the point of it at all, as has been mentioned already. Always so many Where's Wally costumes, too. I thought Where's Wally was a puzzle book?

reuset · 25/02/2017 20:30

A lot of the teachers dress up, and they seem to enjoy the experience more than the children Grin

PrudenceDear · 25/02/2017 20:32

Our school announced on the last day of term that kids should dress up for wbd as a character from certain authors - each year group were given different authors. There seems to be no reasoning behind authors chosen. Homework was also set, extra to the Reading and maths that is expected. Seems that you can't take children out of school as they'll miss learning but in the holidays, when we can, they set us loads of stuff to do. 😡

Hateloggingin · 25/02/2017 20:32

We've had an Indian day - £25 on costume, several 'wear something orange/purple' days (obviously with a colour no one already has in wardrobe), a Christmas jumper day - £10 each child as they didn't already have one, Roald DAhl days and now World Book Day that has to be Harry Potter, circa £25 each child as we didn't have capes, glasses, wands lying around :(

AlmaMartyr · 25/02/2017 20:32

Fantastic post Antigrinch :)

I'm a librarian, book obsessed yada yada. I love world book day in theory but hate that it's become all about dressing up. There's always the 'superheroes/Disney princesses aren't books' brigade which is ignorant anyway (superheroes generally started as comics ffs, and most kids films have a book) and inherently a bit elitist - it might be the only costume they have/the only thing parents had time to put together/the only thing the kid wanted to wear. I agree 100% with the Roald Dahl thing too. I hated his books as a child, not keen on them now either although I do enthusiastically read them with kids who like him for work. The obsession with him is overwhelming and causes people to miss out on so many other awesome children's authors that really deserve a bigger readership because some people are convinced that Dahl is the only thing worth reading. Grrr.

BornStroppy · 25/02/2017 20:34

Im really disappointeed - this year they just want everybody in their pyjamas - so dull. I love arranging a costume!

Underthemoonlight · 25/02/2017 20:34

I'm so glad I'm not the only one. I think it should be optional and a cut off at a certain age. My dd 3 loves dressing up has several outfits but DS who's 8 has grown out of dressing up and is past that stage. Luckily DS has got a storm trooper costume so he will be going in that and dd is Snow White so I don't have to spend anything.

Viviennemary · 25/02/2017 20:35

Let's think of a way to to stress out already busy parents. If teachers are as overworked as they say they are how come they have time to dream up this nonsense. Talk about looking for work. Donating a book sounds like a great idea. But that would be too sensible I fear.
