Cunting World Fucking Book Day.

I thought I was doing so well this year. DS2 wanted to be Newt Scamander so I found an awesome (and not cheap) costume. DD has a proper wand from the Harry Potter tour so she was lending him that and we have the original book. He was prancing around tonight trying it on.

I double checked the email just to make sure it is actually this Thursday (I have form for getting dates completely wrong, in fact just this week we turned up to the dentists a month early...)

'Come as your favourite Roald Dahl character' it says. Fuckers.

I am so so shit at this.

It kind of works as Willy Wonka if you squint a bit.

Anyone else as fucking shit as me? I hate World Book Day anyway. Still, this beats the time incompletely forgot so ds1 went as Charlie Bucket, ie wearing normal clothes.

I detest dress up days. It has nothing to do with teaching and is a lazy way to mark the day - what about do a collection to buy something for children in Sudan who don't have fucking good let alone dress up costumes barely linked to books? Cannot believe schools are STILL doing these. Parents - write to head and suggest alternatives! Stand up to get rid of this bs!

mmgirish · 27/02/2017 12:13

I'm a primary school teacher and I too hate book day! It's such a hassle and dressing up doesn't even help promote reading.

Even though I've known for ages that it's coming I haven't made the stick man costume I promised my son and am seriously considering sending him in a Spider-Man costume this year. #badmammy

God knows what I'm going to rustle up on Wednesday night for me to wear...

HateSummer · 27/02/2017 12:16

You're all such killjoys 😂😂. I love wbd. I made dd's and dc's costumes and accessories last week. They're so excited, and so am I Blush.

AlpacaPicnic · 27/02/2017 12:57

Whoever it was who wanted a tadpole book - check out Tadpoles Promise. A tadpole outfit could be easy - black leggings, black jumper or long sleeved shirt, black tail made of cardboard...

It does have a bit of a shock ending though!

Nairsmellsbad · 27/02/2017 13:15

Or do the tadpole costume in white and be a sperm from Mummy Laid an Egg

PugwallsSummer · 27/02/2017 13:28

Urgh. It's "world book HAT day" at DD's school. Got the email this morning. So i now have 3 days to create a hat that represents a story book. 🙄

BoccadiLupa · 27/02/2017 13:35

Oh am I one of the only ones who loves WBD? My DS (9) spent so long crippled by shyness and anxiety and refusing to dress up and this year for the first time he is so excited about dressing up for WBD - he wants to dress up as a character from Ravenclaw (he got the robes for Christmas) - anyone know a character from that house??? Anyway it has been a real joy to see him be excited about it.

BikeRunSki · 27/02/2017 13:39

I love WBD, so do the DC. And kudos to all the school staff (albeit moderate size first school), they all dress up too. DS is going to be (skinny) Hagrid, DD the Worst Witch.

GahBuggerit · 27/02/2017 13:43

WHAT?

OMFG i forgot about this. ffs i hate twatting world book day. my kids dont read normal books and read pokemon and minecraft encyclopedias ffs

shit. i could hrab a couple of costumes tomorrow but they prob wouldnt have a clue what character they were

user1487519954 · 27/02/2017 13:47

I remember as a child going as George from the famous 5... I already had short hair, so I just wore shorts and a t-shirt and carried my sister's toy dog (Timmy obv) around with me!
That was an easy costume and pretty spot on...

HateSummer · 27/02/2017 13:49

You have a whole year to prepare. How do people forget? Think of it like your birthday or Christmas. It happens every year. It won't stop happening. Long may it continue. 😆

It's not World Book Day that's the problem it's school making it so much harder by setting themes, not giving enough notice.

My dc's primary school this year are doing your favorite book character, last year was PJ's and a book.

DD1 High School is doing a book sale, to raise funds for new library books.

I've never been given the theme a year in advance - in fact I'm lucky when we get a week's notice about it.

I actually liked the last school approach - making a weeks events round a theme and stories did get my children interested in those authors and sometime reading the books.

This year that really isn't happening - it's just yet another random dress up day.

Tatiebee · 27/02/2017 14:40

My kid's school have asked parents to attend a drop in afternoon where we can read with our children. Sounds lovely, however they have asked that we dress up as book characters as well as the children!

Goldenhandshake · 27/02/2017 14:43

Not only do DC's school have to dress up they also have to create a story box (shoe box) and create a scene from a book inside, send in a photo of them reading in the most unusual place they can think of, and donate a book for 'book swap' too.

They could have just run with the book swap and be done with it!

happymumof4crazykids · 27/02/2017 14:49

I did George from George's marvellous medicine for my son last year. Jeans, red tshirt a wooden spoon and a bottle of coke with glitter, washing up liquid and sweeteners in it! Just glued the lid so the kids couldn't open it! He loved it and had great fun making the 'medicine'

booox · 27/02/2017 15:33

Yep it's going down hill here rapidly.

We chose Zog. I started making a papier-mâché zog hat and wings. Found an orange t shirt and red joggers. We need to paint the masterpiece thing tomorrow for nursery on Thursday. I'm at work on weds so must be done by tomorrow.

Ds has just announced he wants to be the stripy black and yellow one in the background and is refusing to help it try any of it on.

Oh. lord, I remember all this, especially the year I discovered one of DH's hidden talents... DD was not a girly girl and hated dressing up. The only thing she would countenance dressing up as was Cubone from Pokemon*. Most of the outfit was easy enough, except for the skull he wears. My DH leapt into action, went to the local shop to grab an empty box, and half an hour of cutting, folding gluing and painting later - hey presto, a Cubone mask!! DD was well happy, and I was very relieved...

*I'm sure there must be such a thing as a Pokemon book. Somewhere.

Great choice! Most of the well know Ravenclaws in the series are female, but there are three boys from Ravenclaw in Dumbledore's Army - two of which have interesting connections to Fantastic Beasts, if your DS likes that too?

Anthony Goldstein (descendants of sisters Tina and Queenie from Fantastic Beasts)
Michael Corner (who dated Ginny Weasley for a while)
Terry Boot (descendant of the founders of Ilvermorney, the American wizarding school)

If DS is short, he could also say he is a young Professor Flitwick, who was also a Ravenclaw.

Yeah, I know. I'm a Potter nerd to the extreme Blush. Hope this helped a bit and your DS has a great time.

38cody · 27/02/2017 23:30

Just put him into the costume you have.
As for expense - we make fab costumes from things we have already and a glue gun - our are always fab. Homemade is far more impressive and pretty much free.

Lemondrop09 · 27/02/2017 23:34

Btw OP, Newt Scamander is a fantastic choice (but I'm biased)! I would definitely let your son wear it. If anyone says anything, tell DS to threaten setting his Niffler on them!

I can't understand why schools have started themes on WBD? It used to be about celebrating what children like to read. So let the kid dress up as a character they like, rather than enforcing a rule about a book a child might not have read or have any interest in reading.

SomewhatIdiosyncratic · 27/02/2017 23:36

We've been given 6 days notice with the list of books that DS's class has covered this year.

DS doesn't do dress up. He does shorts and t-shirts/ short sleeved shirts and that is it. A theme based on something set 1930s- 1970s could work for him, but thats not on offer, and he hasn't come across Narnia, Enid Blyton, Just William etc yet.

This is a child who will go to Halloween/ Christmas parties looking like he belongs on a the beach. I am not wasting money on costumes that he may only grudgingly wear after a mother of a tantrum.

We had done OK out of Roald Dahl as he could wear shorts and a shirt like the cover of James and the Giant Peach. I fear that this time we may be stuffed.
