lurker !Y understanding of the demographics of trump's vote was that most of the middle classes voted trump and most from lower incomes voted Hillary. Which sort of puts in doubt the idea that trump got in because of the poor working classes and the rust belt.

Here are some nice charts for you uk.businessinsider.com/exit-polls-who-voted-for-trump-clinton-2016-11/#the-racial-divide-between-democratic-and-republican-voters-was-clear-3

Just putting this here...

GingerIvy · 07/02/2017 21:29

Dame Hey! Put a warning on those pics! That's traumatising!

Dame. Please!

My largest concern is that we now have, lurker, a Commander in Chief

For a brief moment I misread the punctuation in that post and thought lurker had declared herself commander in chief of this thread in some sort of take over Grin

On surveys and statistics - I listen to More or Less and I recommend their podcasts.

First rule - define your definitions.
Second - who was asked?
Third - how were they asked?
Fourth - can we dig deeper into the results and ask why?

Once you start doing that, it's amazing how easily polls can be dismissed.

But if you don't dismiss a poll because you agree with the answer, that probably makes you just as guilty...

Badders - in the run up to the election I do remember commenting to friends that I didn't feel Hillary was doing enough to reach out to black voters (and the "basket of deplorables" comment for the white low-income swing voters in Michigan etc. - did she learn nothing from Brexit?) And I've since had some chats with black Americans on line - some said that they had serious reservations about the Clintons (one in particular referred to a Bill Clinton get tough on crime ad which featured a location notorious for the use of chain gangs of largely black prisoners, and explained that if you were black it would be almost impossible to read that ad as not being dog-whistle politics aimed at a certain type of racist white voter). NB - there is of course the danger that the people I was talking to were not representative, but it was interesting.

Are the young more conservative? Well ipsos says they are still more likely to vote Labour by quite a way.

Trump spent five years claiming Barack Obama faked his birthplace, and now his staff is concerned about "respect for the office"

Lweji · 07/02/2017 21:39

In case we still needed it, here's your guide to Trumpspeak

Most of it translates into something Donald doesn't agree with or is against. The alternatives are ego strokes.

amispartacus · 07/02/2017 21:39

Well ipsos says they are still more likely to vote Labour by quite a way

Jumps in and says that lovely graph ends in 2015.

Polishes credentials at alternative view.

The thing is with that - I wonder if the fact that a lot of students are in student towns and so these towns are reasonably more likely to vote Labour anyway - so having all those extra supporters doesn't add much - as we all know, it's the marginals in this country that are key to election success...

This stat on generational difference is interesting. It seems like the young obviously spend more time on the internet, but they also cite social media as being much more of an influence on voting decisions than people of other generations. I know it seems obvious when you think about it, but in a campaign that has been focused so much online and on social media in particular, where we have seen the proliferation of fake news this is significant I think.

Exactly ami all of that. Tapper was telling Patriot Barbie over and over "but he's saying these were under-reported that are on the list, and we covered these things extensively" and she say "well, yes, but.... " Spin spin spin.
