Writing all that has really helped me get to the bottom of why I am passionate about this.

I just need to post this again - if you've not seen it.

From Obama's inaugaration. What went wrong with the West?

Have you seen the Moroccan video?

I rate the Moroccan video. It got some really pointed digs at Trump in, whilst embracing the self-deferential humour of the original Dutch one. It might even be my favourite.

Justanotherlurker · 07/02/2017 21:02

Negative words.....followed by a negative at the end.

It was a counter to the idea of the "Irony of Germany beating the new American Nazi" ... and picking up polls to suit the narrative

As you yourself are offering a leading question we could question are you this semantic over polls that suggest Trump is literally Hitler, from these threads I would guess not..

cozietoesie · 07/02/2017 21:03

Dear Goodness. I could only watch half of that, ami. I'm sorry.

But was Hitler 'Hitler' at the start? I have massive concerns over the way the West is going...

It's so easy to dismiss concerns - but look at how easy humans turn on each other.

Srebenica
Syria
Rwanda

People can do horrendous atrocities to each other - and I bet people in Yugoslavia thought that. Then neighbour turned on neighbour.

ami beautiful, this is what those songs are for; these times. Smile

BiglyBadgers · 07/02/2017 21:10

Isn't it also just demographics? Isn't this the last few decades of the white majority in the US?

So is this vote for trump a backlash from the fading majority who can see their days are numbered against those that will follow them? A last desparate attempt to turn back the clock to a time when women knew their place and minorities would doff their cap and do as they were told.

Justanotherlurker · 07/02/2017 21:11

I know that sounds incredibly harsh - I feel for people who have been left behind, who struggle with jobs, education, work. I really do. But I think that a lot of blame is being forced on the wrong people - Islam, LGBT people etc.

There is no blame put on LBGT people so stop being so dramatic, stop trying to equate the swing as a throw back to the 1930's, its not the grey vote, with more university grads you cant blame it on education without getting into a whole other topic, its self reflection on the identitiy politics that has been played over the past decade.

There was a recent report done in the UK around the youth are more conservative than their parents, I will include a report done last year from CNN which is obviously used as some yard stick..

By just saying everyone else is wrong is causing a division

lurker

When I was 10, I lived in Cyprus. It had been invaded by Turkey 2 years earlier. Familes were separated. Villages abandoned. We went on a school trip to an abandoned village. We were shown a shell that had torn through a wall and decapitated a child's head. That sticks in me.

I have seen hate. Hitler was an extreme - and yes, I've been to Auschwitz.

But hate still exists. Hate at groups. Hate at people who are different. I've been to the D Day beaches and seen the graves of people who died to get rid of hate.

Hate never went away. Hate is coming back.

I see you ignored the other groups - Muslims, immigrants, poor people...

I hope you are right. But telling me not to be so dramatic is the equivalent of 'calm down dear'.

There was a recent report done in the UK around the youth are more conservative than their parents

Look forward to you finding it...

BiglyBadgers well it's a white supremacist movement at heart isn't it?

Agree about kids, some of them being right wing. They've been groomed on line not just by twits but by the alt right for nearly 10 years now.

Justanotherlurker · 07/02/2017 21:18

Isn't it also just demographics? Isn't this the last few decades of the white majority in the US?

If you want to disregard the vote then yeah, its the "evil white" vote, other than that you could look that demographic break down and see there are significant minority votes for trump across the US.

It was the white middle class that actually voted against poorer states, clinton tried to rely on the African American vote that didn't turn out for her

amispartacus · 07/02/2017 21:20

There was a recent report done in the UK around the youth are more conservative than their parents, I will include a report done last year from CNN which is obviously used as some yard stick

So - a look at that headline.

High school seniors are more likely to identify as political conservatives now compared to 10 years ago

But then it says:

For instance, Twenge said, "We know from other research that millennials are more supportive of LGBT rights, gender equality and racial equality compared to previous generations.

Given that, it suggests that millennial conservatives may be focusing on issues other than these, for example, economic issues, gun rights."

First rule of surveys - get your definitions.

What do we mean by conservative?

Look at the more detailed questions.

ami thank you for being cross, you're getting me into fight back mode again.

Just because the Superbowl, SNL, football and Eastenders is still on doesn't mean we're slipping fascist wards.
Women's strike on the cards, date to be announced.
Feb 20th is the 3 million action.
Stand up to racism on the way too.

NannyOggsKnickers · 07/02/2017 21:22

Loving this thread! You ladies are like Sean Spicer's worst nightmare. Facts! Who needs facts? Just keep shouting at people that your guy is the best and that Muslims are evil and all will be well (in your own head).

I find the undermining of the judicial branch of government by the Trump regime terrifying. Like Trevor Noah said: it's the first play in Dictatorship for Dummies.

cozietoesie · 07/02/2017 21:22

Maybe they didn't.

My largest concern is that we now have, lurker, a Commander in Chief who is - in the words of someone who had a fair bit of experience in that post - 'not fit to serve'. I don't expect to be here next Xmas. I don't expect any of us to be here.

BiglyBadgers · 07/02/2017 21:23

"evil white" not words I used.

Badders123 · 07/02/2017 21:23

Did Anyone see that coming btw?
The poor turnout of the African American vote....

amispartacus · 07/02/2017 21:24

f you want to disregard the vote then yeah, its the "evil white" vote, other than that you could look that demographic break down and see there are significant minority votes for trump across the US

Of course there are - and that's the rub.

  1. You are feeling left behind and want someone to give you hope
  2. The party you feel will do that has a leader who appears to have an issue with women / LGBT / is racist.
  3. You don't agree with their view points on that but you want someone to give you hope and to speak for you
  4. The other candidate may well be supportive of issues to do with your 'identity' but you feel they will not help with your situation

It's a mind fuck.

I have an issue with Corbyn but I can't stand May.
